I want to make it ***VERY CLEAR*** that any time I say "pound of air" in this video, I'm referring to the mass flow rate of "X" pounds of air per minute. NOT "X" psi of boost. Also, I messed up a bit on the time stamps, here are accurate links: 1:50 How to Read a Compressor Map 16:18 How to Install a Turbo Speed Gauge 20:26 How to Hook Sensors up to Megasquirt 22:45 Test Pulls 24:03 Analyzing Surge 29:50 Making More Boost 31:36 Analyzing Choke 34:21 Trying to Overspin The Turbo (Myth?)

@@jefftoonstra5087 Not realy. If that boat with that much Power and so much traction barely beats the Miata on 0-60 (3.5 Seconds) 60-120 will be roughly 8 seconds due power to weight. 0-120 the miata easly wins.

Thanks Greg! Also, pretty sure you can wire the frequency output of the BW sensor up to pt4 on a MS3x, it has an option to use hardware timers on the main processor, so it should manage to read 160K from a 6258 no problem. 0-5V only. Little to no documentation on it though, about to try it myself. Or, you can also wire it to MAF input on maybe any MS3 and config it as a frequency MAF and do some math on the datalogs after the fact. No need to actually run MAF, you can just log it's frequency.

I wired up the EFR speed sensor direct to PT4, configured for high speed input 1.75 teeth/rev on my MS3x. Seems to work fine. It quits reading around 2K RPM and I haven't maxed it out at 140K+ RPM yet either, around 1/10s update rate could be better but still plenty workable. I log a MAF while running SD and it's still working fine too. Going to make a frequency generator and send a fixed signal just to make sure I'm getting correct data and see where it caps out.

Great video man. Covered a lot of ground here in an easy to digest way. Really demonstrated how beastly the EFR is too. Love the Southern Hooning shirt. That's a throwback. As for the over spin, I think it's that whole shop vac concept. It actually spins faster when there is a restriction. I forget the exact physics law, something something stall. You get dangerous overspeed when the car is under heavy load and a boost pipe suddenly blows though, I believe.

This is a fantastic video. I don't think it's "overly technical" at all. You do a really good job of explaining concepts and then exhibiting data to show what you mean without getting lost in the weeds. Your videos are more useful than my engineering degree when it comes to a lot of this stuff. Super interested in an rpm-variable boost video.

You have to simulat the overspeen the turbo with a small leak! Because you need the strength off the engine to speen the turbo, but the leak for the turbo to spool up and over spean
@vasek987
@vasek987 4 жыл бұрын
overspinning topic: If you don't use compressor like you did, there is less airflow compared to when the engine is charged so overspinning can't happen. It could happen in case you completely removed compressor rotor - there won't be any appiance which would use power generated by the turbine. But this is not the case. You are still spinning compressor wheel which is powered by the turbine and you are compressing air and blowing it back to the atmosphere. And yeah setup you tested for overspin did propably about 120-130hp because of that added extra „restriction in exhaust“ ;)

@TheCarPassionChannel I suspect that with the turbo disconnected (Running NA) not nearly as much air flow is passing in, and therefore Out of the head and into the turbine side of the turbo. So, there just isn't enough air to spin it up to 168k rpm. Super big thanks for all the research you have done, and more importantly, summarizing it so that we who are not quite as bright, can understand. I have looked at turbo pressure maps before, but had no idea what they meant. Now, to get more than 210hp from my garrett SR20DET...

In terms of using the dyno readout and boost log for the Compressor map, you mention a calculation to figure out Flywheel bhp. Maybe one way to make the compressor map more accurate would be to use a Dyno that measures transmission losses, as yours must be extremely unique! 😁 Awesome video as usual though bro ✌

Compound is large turbo feeding small turbo on compressor side. With regards to overspeed, factory cars are usually smaller turbos and made of cast aluminin meaning they can reach max rpm easier in NA and the cast aluminium has a lower tensile strength. Your wheel is billet an has a higher tensile strength, though aluminium still suffers from fatigue. Running a wheel at its limit may not shatter straight away, but eventually it will, everytime you hit redline line you have put tremendous force on the wheel. If you calculate the centrifugal force of only 5grams of aluminium at a radius of 31mm at 180,000rpm that little piece of 5gram aluminium is experiencing 5500KG of force try to pull it outwards. You should displace the compressor wheel in water and calculate its volume and mass of each fin, as well as the back and entire wheel to calculate how much force it is going through. Thats 5500kg for 5 grams. That is why they make the housings so thick in case a wheel breaks.

Awesome vid dude... really well done. Now... lets see how efficient your intercooler and intake system is... Add a map pre intercooler then post intercooler but pre throttlebody. It'll isolate where your limiting factors are. Fantastic chanel man, good on you for schooling people. Also high boost in the mid-rang then tampering it off.. guess how modern high performance turbo cars work? (Ie GTI, S3, 1205i etc) Boom. You got it baby! Make the turbo work in its most efficient range constantly. Makes for an efficient engine.

This is easily one of the best videos out there describing compressor surge and compressor maps in general using all the measuring equipment you would want to know the "whole" story. Big props for that! I'm driving the same engine with the same turbo and your setup is making the same sounds as mine when at full throttle and around 4500rpm (23:10 and 23:25). Its a short whistling sound in the video which can be longer if in a higher gear. I always was worried this is surging. But obviously it is not. Thanks for showing that! Do you have an idea where that whistling sound is coming from?
