One of my cats kept peeing outside of the litter box. We thought something was wrong with her, so we took her to the vet. She had bladder crystals and some other bladder issues. We thought that was the cause of the issue. We treated her, but the issue kept coming back. It turns out, the second cat was guarding BOTH litter boxes. Poor baby was being attacked every time she tried to pee. I didn’t notice for a long time because the aggressive cat wouldn’t do it when I was around. Finally solved that issue and both cats are healthy.

My cat was pooping and peeing outside the litterbox, and she had neverrrr done this previously and no litter options had changed. I was really worried it was something physical so I rushed her to the vet and we did so many tests. Then when they all returned negative, my vet goes, try changing her litter. Lo and behold that lil beetch had just up and decided she didn’t like her pine litter anymore because as soon as I switched to Worlds Best Cat Litter (the actual name which still cracks me up), she has not had an “accident” since (8 months). So yeah I would try changing your cats litter before spending $1k on your cat 😂

I also remember the times on your show it was because the cat was declawed, and the cat felt pain in the paws stepping on litter and never used it again. That was the first I’d heard of that, and the way you helped the cat back in the litter box with soft litter.

i still remember the time my cat pooped on the floor in front of me. she had been going outside the box for a while, and we had just been scolding her (i was a teenager). and i looked at her, opened my mouth to snap her name, and i realized she had her tail tucked as she was doing it. her ears were laid and her eyes were huge. she was scared, but doing it anyway. and h realized she had been trying to get me to notice something. it turned out she had giardia. she had been trying to tell me her stomach hurt. i've never scolded a cat for doing stuff like that ever again. i realized that it's happening for a reason - maybe the reason IS being a jerk or something, i've seen scent warfare take place among cohabitating cats who hate each other before - but they're just animals. and there are only so many ways they can talk to us.

I recently rescued my 8 year old, declawed kitty. She was vetted the same day I picked her up. She had a few pee accidents when i bought her home. I am familiar with what Jackson is saying. I was researching the internet and one item mentioned was not to place litter box on carpeted area. I moved it to the laundry room, now 2 months later I've had no issues since. Also, make sure you don't have a lot of litter in the box as kittie might be peeing over the box. Good luck.

I have 8 house cats all at one were feral. Some were spicey kittens, some were angry adults when I took them in. I had 10 litter boxes 2 or 3 in each room. Cats were peeing everywhere. I found they liked using the boxes I cleaned the least. I also found they liked public potty place. So this is my set up in the hallway outside the bathroom. It has a huge litter box and next to it is a small litter box. I removed the bottom shelf to give extra head room. Yes all 8 cats use it. I scoup once a day.

I have a 2 year old Persian male cat who is very comfortable in his loving ....nurturing home. WELL! My Daughter and son in law who live with me just got a 4 month old Collie which absolutely rocked our cats peaceful world. Sooooo.....I created a safe space up on my second floor for my cat including a secondary litter box...water fountain and his food so that he could feel safe and familiar while he and the dog got acquainted.....It took.2 months but now they are buddies so it's always wise to help your cat to transition into a new normal by going the extra mile 💫🙏💫

Unfortunately for the last month I've had to use fine sand! I forgot the cat litter. 🤦‍♀️ My cat doesn't like it, at all. He will use it but after 3 weeks, he complains. Guess I won't forget again! 🤣

My cat 99.9% of the time doesn't care if it's clean or not she'll still use the box. I once was cleaning it and she had diarrhea and she waited to use it. I don't know how, and it's amazing how committed to the box she is.

honestly...my cat has peed on my bed when they are mad a me. no other reason. The first time it happened (she was new from the shelter) I excused it, but then it got more common, took her to the vet, nothing. Kept happening, especially when my ex would bring certain people over, so I changed the litter type. Kept peeing outside the litterbox, but it became more targeted over time, like it was only on HIS stuff. Finally, I started eliminating factors; no wearing strong scents, not too many people over at a time, etc, eventually I just came up with the conclusion that when she was mad (at him) she would pee on his stuff. When we separated, she quit doing it for a long time, then randomly she would, but again it was because I made her mad (I started a new job and wasn't home as much and we moved again). Eventually, she quit altogether, except for bathroom floor mats...idk why, but I can not have one unless I want her to go potty on it.

The anxiety is definitely my cat. She has been without the medication that used to help her anxiety for a few weeks now because it gave her an allergic reaction, and the medication is so expensive I need to save up so i can buy her a new type that might help😫 I try to give her a treat every time she does go to the litter box to encourage her, but it's not enough though unfortunately. Amazing how cats have complicated brains like us humans :3

My cat is super picky with the litter box (ever since he was a kitten). It really took me ages to find the perfect cat litter. Now he sometimes pees next to it when I'm not on time with the cleaning (I have set times, but you know). With food he is super easy, but my other cat is exactly the other way around. But hey, I've found the perfect litter and now know what they both like to eat.

I notice if I haven't changed the kitty litter after three days my mama cat will pee outside the box. It's been a lesson learned not let it go any longer then that.

First of all you are absolutely wonderful! When my sister had a new kitten about a year ago she tried everything to get her to properly use the litter box. She changed the type of litter from the kind it had had in the foster home and from that moment on the problem was resolved.

Its either stress , the litter or other cats. Or anxiety, it's not just humans who get this. Or it's something physical!

Hi, Jackson... my cat Polo, male, overweight, gentle lazy personality (and very, very lovable.) has been doing it off and on... Took him to the Vet, bladder crystals, he's on special food. He Did it yesterday now he's on the food. He chews on plastic for some reason and I think he got some in his stomach.. I sometimes wonder if my two cats miss my husband (he died of cancer 2 yrs ago) I really do. Do you know if that is even possible? Maybe it sinking in that he isn't coming back? They follow me around the house like little puppies. I'm going to sew up some cat beds. Try to have more places for them to be with me. Be more attentive as a owner. Or could it be my own grief? Can they sense my grief? I cry and Meka comes and rubs against me. I didn't think they would remember him this long.

“Go to the vet” What if you can’t afford to? I really want to get another cat, but I’m not going to because I know that I just cannot afford the vet bills. Sure it might never happen, but what if it does? It’s right when they need you the most and I’m just too fearful. My last cat was 13 and in pain, I begged for the vet to help her, that I would have the money in 3 days, but they ALL said no, I can’t go through that again, I won’t put another beautiful creature in that position. I wish that there were vets who would offer discounted services for struggling families, just something so that animals don’t need to suffer because of a loving owners inability to pay.

Just got a 12 week old ginger tabby. The litter box was an issue untill I saw the reason why. The sides of the plastic box, was to high for him to just jump over. So, I got an old ikea gym mat, and placed it next to his litterbox and it works like a stepstol for him and the problem is gone. 🐾😄

What about cognitive dysfunction? My cats 16 and this is now driving me mad. Even with pee pads down, it often still gets on the floor because she scratches at the pee pads.

Could it be a miss once in a while? Not long after I adopted mine, I think she missed once or twice. She tried to help by kicking litter out to cover it. It's been a year or more since she missed, though.

We have one that I know is marking her territory, but it's right in a corner on my countertop, in front of the microwave. I need help making her feel safe with everyone else because she is the one attacking our other cats. We've had her since she was 3 or 4 months old. I rescued her. About 4.5 yrs ago, a lady got in touch with me about Freija. She had taken her in after seeing Freija around her neighborhood. One day a bunch of dogs from the area were chasing Freija and the woman was able to get the dogs to get away. At that point she took Freija inside and started reaching out for help. Once I got her, we had her spayed and she was fine with all of our adult cats until she was about a year old. We also have dogs and were caring for some foster dogs and their pups. Freija got more comfortable with dogs because of the puppies and our family dogs. Then, when she was about 1, she specifically started targeting one of the oldest cats in our family. It is very strange because this cat is our momma cat and basically took Freija in and took care of her when we brought her home. It's just gotten worse from there. The summer this started we rescued another kitten and brought her home. Freija seemed to get along with that kitten. We got that one spayed as well. Within a couple of months, we rescued a third kitten. Freija was fine with everyone but our momma cat. After about 6 months with the two newest kittens, Freija started attacking everyone. I found my momma cat was staying on top of our cabinets, hiding from Freija, so we beought her into our bedroom. So now we are a house divided. Also, we live on a small farm and Freija goes outside during the day. She goes to our bedroom windows and tries to fight with the cats in our room through the window. When she comes back in, she goes to our bedroom door and she and our second rescue fight with each other under the door. I've tried several of your suggestions for integrating them all because I would really love to not have so many cats in my room 24/7. I know it's not healthy for them or us. But if I don't keep them separated, they constantly fight and pee all over the house. There's details I've left out because it's a much larger issue and this is already so long. My cat has been continuously pooping outside the litter box for almost 2 years now, she scratches on the floor right next to the litter box and if i scold her in between she would quickly go inside the litter. I've tried everything, changed litter, added more litter boxes, changed spots, took her to the vet, nothing is wrong but she just won't stop pooping outside the litter and honestly it's annoying at this point. My cat pees on any bedding. Even when the blanket is on me! Vet has given her clean bill of health. This only happens every 6 weeks or so, but that is because the bed is stripped of all bedding. We sleep on a waterproof mattress pad and I use a bath sheet as a blanket. Even then she pees on the bath sheet every 6 weeks or so.😭

2 cats of 10 years both starting peeing and pooping randomly all over the house. Multiple vet visits, plug in pheromones. All kinds of litter and boxes tried. Different setups. Switching food. It’s been 2 years house is destroyed and I am fighting losing battle.

When I still had 3 furbabies (RIP Kit Kat) I got a Litter Robot. Best thing ever! Not only for them, but also for me at the time due to physical health issues I was dealing with. Still has to be unscented. Rei won’t budge. But that’s perfectly fine.

One of my kitties is a bully cat who likes to use his stored liquid to mark around the house. He doesn't want to waste his efforts in a little box. That's a fourth reason, and one hard to address.

The number one reason given for this, by the animal hospital where I work, is because there aren't enough litter boxes in the house. We always tell clients that there should be as many litter boxes as there are cats in the house....plus one box more. People don't usually like to hear that, because they don't want to clean more boxes, but it really does solve some problems.

I've asked you about this before but to no response, my cat keeps peeing on my bed, she's been desexed (nudered) and she only pees on the bed, somtimes she'll actually run into the bedroom just to pee on it, she's healthy and happy and doesn't pee anywhere else in the house please help us!

I was lucky. My kitten peed in the living room once when he was little. But I had PrettyLitter. So I immediately checked and saw dark green (increased alkalinity sometimes associated with UTI). I called up my vet tech, she had me go to an actual pet store (not just the supermarket) to get urinary health formula food. It worked. He loves that food so much that I kept him on it. I mentioned it to his vet and she said that’s totally ok.

Any experience with a female cat that only pees in the cat box? The first year Mittens became my family, she had a specific running poo path, like she didn't know what was happening and was almost frightened by her poo. When she pooped and she would run up the stairs down the stairs while pooping. She continued this bizarre behavior until she started pooping in 1-inch x 4-inch plastic drawers I had tucked under the couch, demonstrating her ability to use a cat box. I slowly transitioned her to use. I still find her initial poo ritual very strange.

One of mine has been doing this for 5 years now. Has been to the vet like 20 times for it. Hes 14. One time he had infection uti. ONE TIME ONLY. Its calm here i have 5 litter boxs of every kind of everything. I put them where he is peeing pooping. I change them every day. Some are 2 types of litter robots. I even moved the robot ones where the regular ones are to see if he will like that. NOPE! I cant have one rug in my house . Pees on it. I have to put poddy pads all over the house where he goes. I go through about 100 dollars a month in rococo roxi and purreft potion enzyme pee remover. It works. But the Perfect potion ruined my carpet. We got new carpet 3 years ago b4 he got real bad at the peeing. And new laminate shaw h20 flooring. 10thousand dollars in new flooring . Our house was built 21 years ago and it was time. He has totaled 10 thousandth dollars of flooring. Because you cant just replace the pee spot on flooring. I had house painted. Next day after all done he backed up and pi*sed on a wall. Every door in my hall has to be replaced. 2 bedroom door a bathroom door 2 closet door. The i caught him peeing on my cupboard door in 2 spots. Put pads down taped pads to cupboard with painters tape. Clean up with enzyme cleaner. I dont yell at him either. That wont help. Now he is crapping on stairs. All over them. I had him to the vet over and over. Hes on prozac now for 2 years. NOW I NEED IT!! Last month to the vet for checking. No uti. But has lost 2 lbs in 3 months. Kidney and thyroid and other blood tests are good. Last month had that checked. We think its intestinal disease. I cant afford to take him to the specialist vet for that. Im on disability now. I had to go outa work . Early 25 year retirement unexpected. Now im seeing and smelling pee on my kitchen counter. I had to throw the toaster away because he peed on it. MUST HATE TOAST!! My 20 year old son said ENOUGH!! he is taking him to vet for the last time today. We can surrender him to a foster cat care. If all about animals vet will take him. But when he's done either urinating or defecating he comes and finds me in the house to let me know to clean up the puppy pad and now one of his younger siblings is taking up the behavior of urinating on the puppy pads but he'll still defecate in the litter box so I think it's mimicking but anyways that's my funny story

So I have 2 foster cats, one male(Mr. Chunk) one female (Missy). All of Mr. Chunks things are in the master bath and all of missys things are in the master bedroom (furthest from him). They will not share litter boxes. So they each have their own and I have a third in the livingroom area...which they never use, go figure. I think its cause they think the dog owns the rest of the house. I had been having a problem with Missy pooping just outside the litter box on the carpet. So there I was cleaning up papers and what not near the litter box when I noticed her poo on the carpet. She was watching me from above ontop of the dresser. I said Missy, what is this? Did you poop here? That's gross and poop is not suppossed be here. Pointing, I say, It needs to go in the litter box (i pick it up and put it in the litter box one chunk at a time saying no it goes in here). She watched me very intently the entire time. We had lots of eye contact and she continued to look where finger would point. Then towards the end of our conversation she looked at me and then blinked slowly. It's been 3 months and she hasn't pooped outside of her litter box since. I think the conversation went very well! Sometimes when I slack on keeping up with her stuff (food, water, litter box and the room is messy) she will scream at me with multiple meows when I enter her room. When I take care of it all she stips yelling at me and you can immediately tell how grateful she is. I love sharing my life with cats. I think we bring each other so much joy.

Our cats go outside of the litter box when they are unhappy about their food..usually they don’t like a change we are trying slowly or they prefer treats over food and make sure we know. Once they get their treats they behave again. The two cats dislike each other but they unite about all things food.

I have a kitten who's in good health (just had check up and boosters) keeps pooing & peeing around the house, there are plenty of boxes, multiple types of litter to choose from, a small one, a big one, a covered one, an uncovered one, there's one in the open, high-traffic and a secluded one. The little stinker just wont go in any of them. Im gonna ask the lady who I adopted her from if I can buy one of her litter boxes because she was using it at her house, its all I know to try.

I think my cat is just dumb 🙃. Vet said she was perfectly healthy and happy. She’s super spoiled and cared for. Cleaned her liter box like three times a week! My cat was born with constipation it hurt him to poo . I noticed it as a kitten. Then he refused to use his little box to poo because he related it to pain. Yes there are usually heath reasons, but they also need a clean litter box. Go to the vet and get help.

I have a new to me cat that is pretty insecure. He pees standing up in the covered litterboxes, but sometimes he does it in the bathrooms to the shower curtains. Vet gave abx and started him on kitty Prozac. He needs a higher dose, but he is definitely calmer than he was and the inappropriate peeing is about half as often as it was.

My cat uses the cat box to pee, but not to poop. When we got him as kitten over a year ago he was almost 100 percent cat box trained. Then he had digestive issue and his poop was very runy. Since then his digestive issues have cleared up. If we watch him he will not poop. He will wait until we are not watching then poop on the floor. He is the only pet we have and the place he has chosen to poop is next to the front door. Looking for help to resolve his problem.

Hi Jackson! Recently, my fully indoor cat started peeing on pile of shirts and bed. Before this occur, she was taken to the vet for vaccination, and when she came back home, she didn't start peeing outside her litter box until a week after. She's quite attach to me and recently I've been away from home more often. There's people in the house, but she always goes where I go when I'm home. I tried to put her in her litterbox and she seems scared and jump out immediately from it. I'm not quite sure what's causing this behavior anymore, could it be seperation anxiety? General marking?
