For all who wondered what does the monk say: It's a 5-7-5 japanese verse. Literally: "The end of the journey, shed onto red maples, the tombstone." or: "This is the end of my journey, red maples sheds with my own blood, now there is my tombstone."

+陳品儒（Patricius） I suddenly woke up with an alternate translation this morning: I've interpreted the verse in an ordinary 5-7-5 fashion, but if you read it as 5-75, it became like this: "This is the end of my journey, the red maples tinge my headstone." Chinese/Japanese verses always gives different meaning after some pondering. :)

What a modern way of thinking. Death in battle is glorious! Not Modern Battle of course. I could be easily killed by a child from a kilometer away with modern warfare. It went from being something honorable, and a test of skill, to something that literally anybody could partake in. So sad.

Shogun 2 was amazing. I only moved on because the future games feature far more diplomacy options that this game sorely needs. Shogun 3 needs to happen.

shogun 2 was extremely shallow compared to the game that started it all. every single providence had its own map. daylight was measured and when it came time to fight last faction the battle you would fight for literally DAYS(10-15 matches) as your massive armies ground each other down. most of the time at a chokepoint. at least if you were smart. im talking about shogun total war.

Hopefully Shogun 3 will have an avatar conquest campaign where you make your own clan but this time you can use it in single player and start where you want to your province to be.

The general is Takeda Shingen, whose only son died after him. The red samural could have been his brother, Takeda Nobushige, who died in the fourth battle of Kawanakajima against Uesugi clan. This is more fitting since Uesugi were specialised in warrior monks.

The flags on the castle is too small and blurry, how can you so sure it is Oda or Ikko Ikki? And the place that is stabbed by Shingen's knife is North Shinanno (North East of Takeda), where Takada and Uesagi alway fighting over it. Ikko Ikki is more far to the west, near the central provines, Oda at the south of Ikko Ikki and west of Takeda and Tokugawa is South of Takeda.

This cinematic is just beautiful. The red fighter is clearly the better one from the very beginning, from chopping through a glaive in two in one strike in 1:49, to parrying with sword strike his hilt while spinning in 2:00. He is fucking with the warrior monk from beginning to end. This match is not fair to begin with, and so is war, as he is shot down by dishonorable arrows from behind.

That glaive is called naginata and it have a blade that based on katana, naginata is commonly used by female samurai or Onna-musha and Japanese warrior monks or Sōhei, their martial art of naginata is known as Naginatajutsu and it's still used in present day One of the famous female samurai is Tomoe Gozen who lived in late Heian period of Japanese history, and there's also Nakano Takeko who lead Jōshitai or Girls' Army in 1868 to 1869 because Japan is in civil war and ended the feudal period of Tokugawa shogunate

I didn't think of that! I thought the Red Samurai just had enough honor in himself to allow the monk to unsheathe, but I fcompletely forgot about those tpye of techinques. It isn't always to kill with the draw of a blade, but is is a technique, so if that monk knew what he was doing, that Red Samurai would of probably been dead or heavily injured.

They Call Me The Anti-Troll that's debatable- a naginata is probably at an advantage due to it's reach- one well aimed wide swing that can make it through his defense would secure victory. Honestly, I'm surprised to see a naginata in a full-scale battle at all- they were considered dishonorable due to the length, and mostly became a woman's weapon.

Yes they were a women's weapon but I think the commander should have brought a nodachi or a yari instead of a normal katana (or an ō katana) since they were not main battlefield weapons.

basically in an one-on-one fight a losing general causes the reduction of morale to his army while the winning general improves the morale of his army. Nevertheless, if one general choose not to get involved into a duel with an enemy general who is asking, his army will most likely lose morale as well because they will consider their general as a coward. well, after all, just some ancient warfare traditions, hope that help.

+Haywire Dednicat It's like a battle of strength. Both leaders will make one of their best warriors to fight in a battle. If the attacker's best soldier wins, the battle for the castle will continue but if the defenders win then the attacker will be forced to retreat since if one of them can kill his best soldier. Why risk to sent your army to fight when the defender have more or less skilled warriors than you?

If you mean 'uncool' as in, by the looks of it, the castle garrison and their lord disregarding what we can only assume to be a duel over who keeps said castle, and then going back on whatever word they gave by shooting the victorious samurai in the back, then yes, I will agree that was about as 'uncool' as you can get.

My biggest question is how on earth did the Warrior monk die? He's wearing full armor, contrary to popular misconceptions from movies...YOU CAN'T CUT THROUGH ARMOR, with any sword. A sword, especially a katana which is relatively specialized for cutting, is not a good weapon for that but if you were going to do it you would aim for face, neck, armpits, behind the legs etc. You wouldn't be trying to cut like in an unarmored fight because unless you hit exposed skin it would do less than nothing. My only guess is that the red samurai hit the monk underneath the curiass where it connects to the thigh armor around the sash area. That being said though, good choreography tho.

The armor plates themselves aren't very thick and they're segmented and stitched onto an underlay of leather with thread and small colored cloth/dyed leather strips, they're not whole metal armor pieces like European-style armor. A well placed thrust to a gap, like you suggested, or an arrow between segments can push it's way through armor pieces with sufficient force and angle. It was uncharacteristic and considered dishonorable to attack someone from behind, unless your opponent is aware of you being there. Much of the armor of that period was designed with status and adornment in-mind, so armor covering the neck and nape is minimal and highly stylized.

@@DS-zn7yk Don't underestimate the Ikko Sect's in this period. Their strongholds were strategic as fuck. They were'nt even a formal "clan", but a religious movement, and yet they held their own against official militant clans.

its funny because in the game if you couldnt burn the gates down during a siege you most likely send your men rock climbing the walls without a ladder 😂😂

@@ecayeta It was difficult even historically, because if your men did manage to make it into an enemy stronghold, they would have to navigate their way through a labyrinth of outer walls and paths just to reach the tenshu (main keep). Japanese castles were cleverly designed to deceive and confuse the enemy. The clan leaders who had firearms and gunpowder (such as Oda Nobunaga) probably had a far better chance of breaching fortifications as they could just chip away at the walls with cannon fire til an opening was available to break through or just blow down the main gates. Either would have probably been done but the latter seems the most likely and easiest to do.

@@sethguest781 Yeah, after playing the Fall of the Samurai DLC I can conclude that gunpowder and artillery make sieges so much easier. Just a few cannons on your side and you can blow away the gates, walls, and defenders at the same time before your men even reach the walls

However they turned back towards their old ways in WW2, and that's actually what caused a large amount of the problems (such as their belief in fighting to the last man, woman, and child, leading to some incredibly bloody battles)

Polearms are the primary weapons ingame, yari ashigaru and naginata samurai make up the majority of armies in the game unless you are Date or Shimazu. Katana samurai are frontline troops here probably because they are better on the offense.

Historically Samurai preferred the yari as their primary weapon, but they always carried a katana for use if they were disarmed or if they were fighting in confined quarters like a forest where swinging the spear around would be awkward.

Thats just a artistic license they took, but yeah, he could've had hit the monk on the head or in the neck, but they wanted him to talk or have his face cleaned from injuries, or something like that... Anyway, thats a bit overused thing in movies and games, were armor doesnt exist appearantly

Late comment, It is not plate armor, just a few iron plates sewed together to resemble armor so naturally it has gaps. Also, people with good sword skill is known to cut through an iron helmet in half in a single strike "Toshishiro Obata holds the record for Kabuto Wari (兜割), or helmet cutting, for his cut on a steel Kabuto (兜; helmet)" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tameshigiri
