btw, if you want to check out a song wth Miku on vocals, check out Time at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/at59qZN6ra_HnqM.html It's more along the line of Thrill as well. Simple, poppy albeit less a heavy sound relative to Thrill. One last thing, when you mentioned the 80's, a thought popped into my head with regards to the vocals. Miku and Saiki remind me of Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Ann with her power vocals and Nancy complementing the harmonies with her softer beautiful vocals.

good on miku for recognizing her voice, while good, was lacking a "punch" that was needed, then going out and finding the perfect voice to join them. its that kind of selflessness that gives this band longevity in my opinion.

As others have pointed out, this wasn't one of their compositions, but it was "a new beginning" in that they were moving away from their original pop/punk sound on their first mini-album, Maid in Japan. This was them taking more control in they style of music they wanted to play, even if they weren't writing it yet. The first song they wrote on their own (that was released) was "Alone," in Feb. 2016. After that, they never looked back and have been in complete control of both their sound and their songwriting.

Miku & Saiki also wrote the lyrics for two other songs on "Brand New Maid", and I would guess (as they played them) they also had a fairly big influence on how the songs sounded.

Miku also hasn’t yet learned how to play guitar if you watch she’s basically just posing with the guitar, after this album they left this label because the label would not agree with them writing their own songs, the first song that they were allowed to write as their own was “Alone”, another MV you need to react to as well, IMO probably has Kanami’s best solo out of any BM song!

I think they have changed the label much later, and definitely not because of any conflict. They were actually quite happy getting materials from the external composers, Kanami was always inspired by those contributions from outside: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/hf1cyq/interview_with_bandmaid_on_jungle_life_on_20160610/ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ - This time you wrote and arranged Track 8 Alone all by yourselves. Was that your first try? Miku: It was just my first time to co-write lyrics. Actually, we’ve been writing songs for long. Alone is our first ever song finally approved. - So you have been writing songs. Miku: Yes. Our song was approved for the first time finally in our third year. Saiki: We showed it and got rejected and refined it again and again. So if you include that, its production time was extremely long. - So it took a long time to write the current form from its demo. Kanami: Basically I’m the one who writes a demo to some extent, then all of us refine it together. We also discuss with staff members again and again… It took probably a few months like that. We completed it while discussing like “let’s change the phrase like this” or “how about changing the development like this to have a storyline?” ... - This time, various songwriters have provided songs to you. Is that intentional? Kanami: Actually that’s just by chance. Saiki: First we decide what kind of songs we go with, listening to demos together. We decide them without knowing the composers’ names. - So you choose them while hiding the composers’ names. Kanami: We decide by our sense. Miku: Each member of us chooses songs among many candidates every time, like “I like this” or “this is good”. We are strongly attached to our songs because we choose them ourselves. We think they are “songs we ourselves have met”. - So you feel attached to provided songs because you have chosen them by your own will. Saiki: When they arrange the songs we’ve selected, all of us give our opinions. We also sometimes say “please make a melody line like this.” Recently we clearly see the path we Band-Maid should take, so we tell them like that. Miku: As for the lyrics, we tell them the importance of our “image of a strong woman” and our feeling that “we want to sing this song like this”. This time I also told my own thoughts like “I want to change the wording of this part” so I feel we’re all involved in the song production. - Do you change your songs from the originals in your arrangement? Misa: We change quite many parts. I leave tasty parts, but I also sometimes change everything myself. Akane: I sometimes make the drums a little more flashy, and change some parts where I want to show off myself. I’m the type who arranges while playing in the recording, so I sometimes change everything on the fly. I’ve once changed the whole phrase completely. I often change the drums quite a lot like that, to make them cooler. Kanami: As for the guitar, I basically use the riffs without any change, but I also add phrases I want to insert. While I learn from them, I play what I want to play. - So you keep good points of the original and add your own things. Kanami: In the beginning, we sometimes tried to copy them perfectly. But we’ve increased our stock of knowledge more and more, and we’ve become able to arrange songs ourselves. Misa: The level of the provided songs is getting higher and higher, which stimulates us well. Akane: Sometimes I receive songs above my level, and there are sometimes phrases I can’t think of by myself. I find something new, like “If I play like this, it comes out like this!” so I can increase my stock of knowledge and I can study. I can step up myself faster because they show me something I don’t know yet. - Now I understand provided songs also lead to your progress. Kanami: We want to write and arrange all the songs by ourselves someday. But I also want to ask them to arrange, because I’m afraid that doing everything by ourselves will limit our range. Now we want to grow further and further. We want to receive a little more songs from others until we establish ourselves.

Miku wasn´t able at that time to play guitar... If you are paying attention to it, you gonna notice it. She learned from Kanami how to play guitar afterwards... She was her "sensei"! Maybe that´s the reason she had more singing parts back in the day, i mean it´s hard to play guitar and sing at the same time especially if you are not used to it... So, you´ve learned a little sidenote from Band-Maid again. Love your reactions, keep them coming! P.S.: Cool that you mentioned Chris Jericho! He is a multitasking legend IMO :)

Miku was their original singer, Saiki was brought in for more vocal punch. At this time Miku didn't play so I believe they gave her the second verse to show her off. They just hung a guitar off her as a prop. Would you play that riff on a Rickenbacker? They didnt write this song but Kanami made it her own. Her right hand plays a very percussive rhythm which adds to that 80s big hair sound. Nice reaction

well, it was their hardest song back then. most of the songs before "Thrill" were straight "pop-punk"... so... didn't worked out. I mean some of them were really good, but they didn't "caught on". some of the earlier B-M-songs are actually really good. Anyway, one of the managers of their label suggested to try "hard-rock". Song wasn't written by them, but Miku had some input on the lyrics. some things to notice - Miku can't play at all. They basically thought it looked weird with two vocalists in the front and 3 musicians in the back. So having one more guitar would look cooler, esp on official band-pictures. Both Miku and Saiki tried. Saiki looked just weird with it. So Miku it was. Later Akane and Kanami both suggested that Miku should actually learn to play and not just pose with it. So she has. Learned to play while still doing live shows, they just turned her volume down and slowly increased it as she made lesser mistakes :) - Saiki in "normal" maid outfit, including apron - MISA in "normal" maid outfit, wearing shoes - changing colors in the outfits, something they did regularly back then, today they mostly stick with the ones they have (the current ones were introduced on the Feb. 13/14 Shibuya show, for a long time they used the ones you see in the "DICE" MV) - MISA 4 string bass with a Hendrix sticker :D - Akane has her little hat, the way she sits on the drums, is "stiff", not using pedals, or barely - Miku has her first "Rickenbacker". Kanami disliked it afaik - Kanami is not with "PRS" yet. She switched after Miku switched to "Zemaitis" - Miku and Saiki singing dual-vocals, the way Miku actually envisioned as Saiki was brought in - the better Miku became on the guitar the more "dual-vocals" disappeared, Saiki taking lead. - the popularity of "Thrill" MV outside of japan, is due to "Babymetal" craze. KZfaq algorithms done some good once in a while the first time I saw "Thrill", I was like "yeah, it's okay"... and didn't looked into this band more. Their next MV "Real Existence" on the other hand was soo good, it got me hooked.

Simpler drum kit, Jazz Master Bass and Kanami engineered Addictone guitar, she was one of two players endorsed by Addict One, later she changed to another and then for a while one like Santana used but the response was to slow for her and then a smart move to PSR. Akane went through a few drum makers, delivered a beating to all and finally Tama stepped in, Although one kit she used by another Japanese maker who I cannot recall that went out of business in Osaka had really great sound as did the German set. But she was worked it out with TAMA and her ludwig snare and found the tone shie likes, one I like too. Misa changed to a 5 string that involved her having to change how some of the songs done with the Jazz Master were played but she worked though it. At the time of Thrill Miku was still learning from Kanami and as a group they were growing as music was generated by Kanami with lyrics from Miku and Akane pushing all to practice practice and 5 plus years later, a great rock band making everything the do look fun and easy. And they are still growing... Now with Saiki having input on lyrics with Miku who has turned out to be a really great lyricist power and of course Kanami a brilliant composer. Keep in mind most of their songs could be performed by and entire orchestra as classic and also as acoustic. The brilliance of Kanami and Band Maid arrangements is far more complex than most people notice. Misa dose compose the bass line, and Kanami puts down parameters and BPM for the Drums pushing Akane up from `180 to 190 and then 200 in some compositions. At some point Kanami said when Miku gets better on some songs Miku will do the lead and Kanami will play piano. Who know someday Akane might drag out her trombone and do when the maids go marching in.... On the most recent album Saiki had a lot of imput with Miku and Kanami on the lyrics.

They still use outside song writers sometimes, Smile (the B-side of the Bubble single) was written by Kentaro Akutsu, lyrics by Miku. He was also the director and sound designer on their World Domination album and wrote some of the songs on their 1st album Maid in Japan. They did change labels but all of their labels are connected to their management, Platinum Passport. But even this early Misa had a bass solo.

Also, there isn't an official live version out there, so you have to only deal with the official audio or bootleg/fan-cam live videos. This song is a favorite with long time Band-Maid fans as it was the song that piqued our interest......... and as we later found out, it was the song that kept them together. They were on the verge of breaking up, till they got so many veiws (500,00 -1mil over a few days??). This event gave them the confidence and motivation to continue. Their best song....Hell no. One of my Favorites....Hell yes. More so with it's context than anything else. Always puts a smile on my face. Their first "All Original" song is ALONE. In fact legend has it at 2.33 min of the song, Miku is looking up and smiling as if to say "We have finally did it." It is so cool. This band has such a cool backstory, or rich history, and it's so feelgood that it makes you want to throw up. They could really do a movie of these girls.Today. And with that all said, "They are probably the best rock band on the planet". I will be watching the with a Carlsberg tomorrow... Singing duties..... Miku WAS the original singer, but she realized that the sound she wanted was not what SHE could provide. so they were left with instrumentalist (Kanami, Akane and MISA) and a "lame" singer(in her eyes), so they recruited Saiki. Their record label at the time suggested one of the singers should at least "hold" a guitar...... and apparently it looked better on Miku...... and so Miku's journey begins.. I follow A LOT of people for inspiration and Niki Lauda is my all time hero....... till I came across Miku. No Miku, No Band Maid......That simple.

At this time it was envisaged that the band would feature two vocalists swapping lead parts, but Miku opted to take a more background role, possibly to allow her to focus on playing the guitar (for a long time it was noticeable that she'd have to stop singing while she played: she's now capable of doing both simultaneously). Miku's vocals are underused these days - she doesn't have Saiki's power but she has a good range and a gentle, caressing quality that makes her a perfect complement to Saiki.

It was called "New Beginning" because it was a change in sound from "Maid in Japan" which had a more "conventional" J-Pop/Rock sound to the more hard rock sound which we are familiar with today. They didn't start recording their own stuff until "Alone" on the the following album "Brand New Maid". And at this point in their musical career, they were more a "2 singer" band (as Miku really didn't know how to play guitar yet) vs the "main singer, background singer/rhythmn guitar" set up we have today.

A good analysis of this song man.. You can tell this their "out of the stalls" song, but the point you make about having something that is a showcase for launch is a very valid one, and it worked. All we know they are now, can be heard here.

Went back to listen to the acoustic version of this song from 2014, 1 week after this music video was released. When the music video was made they'd probably only been performing together for a little over a year and were struggling to find would be their voice, their sound, their thing. The success of this video is probably what made them keep going and continue to grow as a group and eventually getting their major debut in 2016. The acoustic version though is also fun to listen to. That acoustic mini concert has Miku hitting some lower notes in "Forward", Miku playing a handful of chords more than just power chords, Saiki playing the tamborine, Akane's little hat, and a very fun acoustic version of one of their most upbeat songs I can think of, "Knocking On Your Heart". If we had a time machine, what would we use it for? Would totally like to have seen some of these older live concerts especially since some of these songs i don't think they ever perform anymore. In general, our stereotype of KPop is that the people will work really hard to try to be as polished as possible and try to put out a "completed" polished well-practiced performance. Rock bands that get mainstream attention in Japan are largely like that as well... they need a unique hook and a great performance to get their "big break" but realistically there are tons of indie bands working hard that won't get much attention outside of indie circles as they put their all into it and get better & better until hopefully they get picked up for their big break. On the other hand completely the opposite to those two cases is JPop where there are plenty of cases where people like to watch (mikansei = "incomplete") people struggle, give it 120%, work super hard, and improve over time to became amazing. That journey can be highly marketable and satisfying when your favourite artists whose careers you've been following achieved a huge milestone like being on Music Station (a popular weekly music show with live performances mostly from artists from big powerful labels but also other artists getting their big break). Here in 2020, we get the best of both ways... we get to see their well-practiced and well-polished performances at the end of their tours plus we get to see all these performances along the way in their careers from brand new artists, to their major debut, to the next major milestone playing Budokan in Feburary.

There are plenty of comments about how this was not written by them, but don't let that put you off. They have some great songs from that era with videos on their channel, and you can really hear how it inspired their sound. e.g. "Real Existence" (go for the live version, also on their channel), "Don't Let Me Down", "Non-Fiction Days", and "Before Yesterday". I would also imagine they had a big hand in how those sounded, rather than being given fully-formed tracks with every note, drum fill and solo written for them.

At the 5:33 mark there is a cover of Santana's "Love, Passion, Matador", than at 15:57 mark is an very early Latin music version of "Thrill". The title of the clip: [ KZfaq用 冬フェス BAND MAID].

Please react to Band-Maid Alone, it is the song that made the record company realize they should be writing their own stuff. And you need to check out Band-Maid time where Miku sings leads. Also here is a link to Band-Maid Moratorium Live at Zepp Tokyo. www.bilibili.com/video/BV15E411g7wY?from=search&seid=15248800796491178569 Moratorium is like their anthem to love the amazing stuff they write and preform. From the heavy bass riffs in your face from Misa, to Saiki and Miku's amazing vocals, to the slamming drumming of Akane and let us not forget, filling every single place she can with amazing riffs and solos Kamami. Moratorium is a must to react to.

I was gonna say, he seems to appreciate what Miku brings to the band (besides, ya know, *founding* it - and zaniness). A) 'Rock In Me' is the uplifting feel-good song of the decade, but B) when you hear a live version you really notice how much thinner the band sounds without her journeyman rhythm guitar cuz she's working the crowd. (Although, as with a soft bridge or pre-chorus, that works so that they hit you with both guitars + vocals afterwards.)

This was actually heavier than the stuff from their early days. The story goes that somebody put a link to the video on a popular Facebook page, and it got something like two million views in a week. Their social media then just went crazy, and they had no idea what had happened. You have to remember they were still a very small band at the time, virtually unknown even inside Japan, no chart success at all, and suddenly they started getting an international following. The acoustic version is more different than most. They completely change it, giving it an almost latin-american feel, but you won't be missing a life experience if you don't see it.

I've wondered more than once if the strong Latin feel on the acoustic version is Kanami channeling her hero Carlos Santana.

So this was 2013. It was my gateway and I think i listened to it like 20 times in a row. Also remember that Misa was stil on 4 strings, Miku on the Rickenbocker, Kanami was on the Addictone and this is not Akanes drum style, but the song still rocks. They have chnaged style alot. I do wish they would split vocals a little more than they do now, as i love Miku.

Obviously everyone has already said how they didn't write this. But you asked about the vocals with Saiki vs Miku, they did a lot more back and forth on this album, Freezer is insane back-and-forth vocals, and then they also have several songs where Miku just sings the entire song/lead vocals. Beauty and the Beast, TIME, Rock In Me, as well as older sound (aka BEFORE Thrill) where they were more pop rock, there was Big Dad, and Summer Drive.

Actually, what they were thinking at the time was "Should we break up?" Then "Alone" climbed the charts in Japan, and the "Thrill" video went international via Facebook. How old is this video? Miku is holding a guitar she has no idea how to play, Saiki hasn't shredded her apron yet, Mincho doesn't have her PRS, and Misa is actually in a maid uniform...
