Part of the collecting journey: you get to the point where you need to work with what you own, trading instead of buying. It stops the spending frenzy and engages you into a different thought process on what you’re willing to sacrifice for the next one. 👍👍🙏🙏

I don’t know if y’all noticed it, but we witnessed something quite special here: a live evolution of the sartorial journey. Ash, correct me if I’m wrong but for the past few years, you really liked the submariner and other sport chunky watches. You made few videos about them in which you elaborated about their pros and praised their aesthetic. And now we hear for the first time, that your taste and preferences have evolved. Of course, this happens in many aspects of clothing and accessories. It’s very interesting to notice the moment in life when it happens - and there we have it right in front of our very eyes.

Absolutely, I hold my hands up and admit that I have been influenced by the media and marketing into believing I 'needed' the sporty Rolex watches, when in fact, I think I should have stopped when I acquired the Submariner. I certainly did not need the 2 GMT references that have ended up in my collection. I must admit to enjoying the steel/gold GMT (I'm wearing it now), but tastes change and we constantly evolve. I think I have gone through that 5-year cycle of my tastes and I'm ready for a touch more sophistication.

I know a lot of people on here are team Rolex, but my Omega Speedmaster was purchased below retail and has been faithful for the last 12 years. It is also less well known, so it doesn't have the same perceptions, while still being as good as a Rolex in many ways, but obviously without the prestige and value retention. As a general comment Ash, it is better to have the one watch you truly love, than to have numerous watches that you like a lot.

🤦🏻‍♂️ Omega fanboys always gotta put their input on a Rolex subject smh. No! It doesn’t cut it! Drop it already, it’s passive aggressive. That’s why the famous Ric Flair chose and said once: “You're talking to the Rolex wearing, diamond ring wearing, kiss stealing (WOO!) Wheeling dealing, Limousine riding, Jet Flying, son of a gun!” -while wearing his yellow gold DayDate 💪🏽‼️because Rolex is #1💥

What a coincidence. I bought a 36mm Datejust when I was 30 years old (I couldn't really afford it but I fell in love with it). That was my only watch for 25 years - and it became part of me. About 3 years ago I started getting interested in other watches - which became a passion and a hobby. And with a bit more money to spend i started to build a collection (more Rolex, Tudor and Omega). I've now come full circle and miss not having a "relationship" with just one watch that I wear every day. And the Day-Date is exactly the watch I'm looking at! Looks similar to the Datejust with the fluted bezel but recognition of a longer journey through life....

@@TheChapsGuide Two hurdles to overcome for me. The first you mentioned in your video (concerns over security and safety). The other (maybe the main one) is the potential minefield of selling the other watches. Dealers are offering very low prices given the market right now (continual slide downwards) and I've heard that scammers operate on eBay. Maybe if you go ahead you could do a video on how you went about selling your watches? Finally. Thanks for the great content.

Anyone who saw DJ wearing one in Miami Vice knew, they needed one too. Sadly i wasn't any exception. The only downside of the day date is, where you gonna wear it, where you don't have to worry about it, worry about getting robbed, or standing out too much. Mine is pretty much only worn at home, or when i'm out at night for a drive.

If I may, you're sounding a bit conflicted about your watch journey, last video you seemed clear, Rolex were a bit too much hype for you. Yet now, it's I'm thinking about dropping however many £'s on a Day Date! I actually think you should take a step back and consider other brands entirely. Elegance - Omega De Ville? Incredible horology and exquisite finishing - Glashutte Original Panomatic Lunar. A Reverso maybe? There are endless options, but I hope you can see what I'm saying......... That said, it's your wrist, you do exactly what is right for you :)

Ash, long time (80s & 90s) DD, DJ & GMT II owner here. Agree with all you say about when and where to wear the DD and never with a short-sleeved shirt. Also, I don't wear my DD daily mainly because it will get marked. If I were looking to acquire a 36mm DD I'd seriously look at the used market. A 18238 would tick my box, dependent on dial etc and I'd keep most of the others, or perhaps dispose of one. I travel a fair bit and the GMT with its quick hour change means that I'd never sell it.

Hay Ash I am thinking if you give up the GMT Pepsi you will be hard pressed to get that from the AD again. That would be one I held on to . Remember Rolex is now cut the production of that watch because of the complication of the process to get the red and blue in the ceramic to come out to the standers that Rolex expects of its products. I believe that would be a grate family watch you hand down to the next generation. It will be great to see how you navigate this crossroads. As always thanks for bringing us on the journey of watches with you. Another great video! Thanks again Sir

Well said, Ash! I've also considered trading up to a Day Date and I'm also undecided. My favorite Rolex in my collection is my 36mm green dial OP, so if I were to get a Day Date, it would be the classic 36mm size. I'd probably get a pre-owned double quickset yellow gold 36mm Day Date with stick indices and a dark dial. Much more reasonably priced than a new one. One con you did not mention is gold is softer than steel and scratches easily. Cheers!

Funnily enough, the Daydate was my dream watch before I even knew what a quality watch is. Now that I'm a true watch enthusiast I'm a bit less interested in it, even if I'd still love the yellow gold version with the bottle green dial on a leather strap. A year ago I wanted a watch with precious metal and stones. I learnt about Credor and loved the brand history. Bought a model with an 18k yellow gold bezel with diamonds on it for 750€. I looked up how much a Datejust with such a bezel was selling for, and it was more than 20 000€. I find such a bargain incredible!

The day date and smaller watches like the Vacheron Constantin 222 are definitely becoming very fashionable again. If you want timeless I would avoid turquoise dial as its become the go to hype piece in the last couple of years in the same way green dials were 3 or 4 years ago. Nico Leonard was saying the other day that rose gold is his fave also. I would be nervous wearing any watch over a few thousand in somewhere like London now. A lot of people buy a matching fake and wear that leave the real watch in storage!

Very interesting discussion. IMHO one sport Rolex is enough and my choice has been an old Submariner which I have owned for decades(just like Bond btw). A dressier option Rolex is certainly a gold DD but perhaps toned-downed with a discreet croco strap. The used market for older DD's is a bargain as these are not sought after as much as the recent craze in steel sport watches. It's probably a good time to sell at the high and buy an older DD at lower prices, sell high, buy low, a good arbitrage play !

Well done Chap. Interesting take on a desirable watch. We all have different take on what watch to have and it will always be like that. First, over sized watches are not Chap watches!. 36mm Rolex Datejust and Daydate are Chap watches!. Vintage Rolex are Chap watches!. Any watch with diamonds are not a Chap watch, yes not something a gentleman would ever wear. He could own one ofcourse, but never be seen wearing it. The optimal Rolex Daydate config is then a Vintage lets say 18038 18K yellow gold with black dial and gold numerals and hands. Skip roman or arbabic numerals, and certainly no diamonds. Go classy and with style, be refined and a gentleman. Anyhow get whatever watch you like. All the best.

And if you sold 4 of your watches, you can maybe get one, or even platinum? There is a white or grey dial, a light blue and others But anyway, your white dial choice is beautiful In any case, I would definitely be selling your chunky rolex sports models. From rolex, I only like the Explorer 1, the ops, datejust and day date Pretty much everything else is too chunky Personally, after selling off your watches (if you do), I would even consider a special JLC, but the issue is that they are not very water resistant.... so maybe stick with a rolex 🎉

Something "catches your eye" ... I've considered spending over 1000, but 2k would absolutely be my limit and even then when I really think about it, the cons outweigh the pros. I think a nice watch on the wrist with rolled-up sleeves on a summer's day is a great accessory. Really brings the look of an intentionally well dressed man up a notch... but it's just a bit of decoration ultimately. no need to break the bank over it or be seen to be "flexing" wealth. like I said, I'm not a watch guy. lol. but wear a watch. but can't justify spending that about of money even if I was a millionaire.

The Day-Date is one of those watches that strike me as rather like a Rolls Royce. The biggest reason to own one is to show the world you CAN - because, let’s face it, under most circumstances it’s useless. And a magnet for crooks. On the other hand, since you’re a former policeman, you may have enough karate training that in a pinch you can pull a Bruce Lee and teach someone a lesson he desperately needs. If that’s the case, go ahead.

Honestly, I don't really share the idea of owning such a ridiculously expensive Rolex. From asthetic point of view it isn't any nicer than a DJ. The bracelet is IMHO less nicer than Jubilee. The date complication itself is from historical point of view an interesting feature, but probably 50 $ more worth in production, not worth so much more money than DJ. And if one wants to impress others, then e.g. a Patek Philippe Nautulus would be a much better choice: it is even more expensive and at the same time more recognizable as a "fortune" by others nowadays. P. S. By the way, dear Ash, just few episodes ago I remember you saying, you were done with your oversized bulky Rolex watches, simple military watch was enough. (Where I fully agree with you, you Rolex watches are newer models with bulky, not classical housings, and a simple field watch is a very smart choice in deed)

If I could simply walk into an AD and buy a President I would…but you can’t. And that’s a shame. Actually you can’t buy ANY of the popular models. So my 3 watch collection has come from the gray market thru trades and deal making and over paying. 😢

I’m sorry Ash, I think they’re horrible. They look blingy, and chav. You’ll feel so self conscious wearing it. I just think they’re vulgar, and people like boxers and footballers wear them. Get a north face jacket as well! Why don’t you get a beautiful Omega DeVille on a leather strap? I would certainly sell the 2 GMT’s though for something else.

Rolex manufactures great sportswatches.. but in precious metal they‘ve this 1970‘s-pimp-vibe; way to clingy.. at this pricepoint I‘d keep out for a watch of the holy trinity or an ALS. The „presidential“ has no raffinesse.. Won’t offend you, I‘m just a straight german😅

It’s not one size fits all! You half men size, midget Napoleon syndrome having dictators keep saying that. I’m a 6’3 power lifter, those pewnie sizes don’t even offer enough links for my gargantuan tree trunk wrists! My skydweller 42mm is my dress watch, and my Sea Dweller 43mm is my “Submariner” and I’m happy with that (even though I’m always angry for no particular reason).

It's a beautiful watch, yuk. I hate collecting watches. The hobby has skewed my sense of economy, even though I'm many tiers below where this beauty inhabits I find myself contemplating pushing my personal limit on the agreed luxury entry level price point. Entry level luxury watch equals mid level gaming PC.

Ash, a DayDate suits you and your personality so excellent. In a perfect world, I wish you’d trade all your watches except the Explorer 1, for 3 DayDates Yellow, Rose and Platinum. They go better with suits, casual and any wear 24/7, it’s a watch you never take off. But To be honest, times have changed and as a result of the hype and price frenzy, more people know about Rolex. Cities like the London, LA and NYC are now also dangerous because they have no weapons or gun rights. To be honest, I get the most complements from my fountain pen, followed by my shoes and only a handful for my watches. we as watch fanatics think everyone will notice our watches, but the vast majority of “normal” people really don’t, again, unfortunately only another watch fanatic or a criminal will notice these days. I live in NYC and in Miami FL, I’ve seen older gentleman, doctors at my job and even in the bus in manhattan men wearing DayDates so elegant and under the radar, it’s not a flashy watch in person or in the wild, I often tell the person who I’m with at the moment when I point out someone wearing a Rolex, and never have anyone noticed themselves and tell me I’m the only one that notice as a fanatic.

This watch, in the very least, should be upgraded to a triple date complication (adding in the month) plus an annual calendar. Unlike the Skydweller, which has the annual calendar complication but lacks the triple date feature. Considering the money you’re expected to pay, it’s just too plain and simple. A clear case back & a nicely finished movement on display would also help.
