@Axe_Slinger 4 жыл бұрын
@@thedjentlemansshow I'm not sure about that! False cord is a constriction of the false cords which almost always produces high pitch. Fry is wide open and almost always produce lower pitches! Marco from Nightwish does false cord and it's very high and his throat clenches! The key is generally to look at the neck. Tatiana was asked and she said she doesn't know if she's a fry or false cord she just does it... And doesn't reccomend it.

As a metalhead, I do believe screaming and growling counts as singing. The amount of practice it takes to have that ability takes longer than you thing. To be able to scream or growl healthily, without damaging your vocal chords takes a lot of time and patience to get to that point.

The thing that counts against it for me is that there is generally no pitch or tone control. It's a scream. It's a vocal effect, it's a technique that's not easily mastered without destroying your vocal cords, but I kinda see why someone might not consider it singing.

@@mkall well that definition is broken right from the off. What's a lyric? How is it different from just a spoken word and why would you use it to define singing? I'd say many musical performances don't have discernible lyrics yet you and I would still say the performer was singing.

i agree if she was a lay person but she is supposed to be a vocal coach so she can be surprised (as everybody would be when listening to Jinjer for the first time) but she should have been aware of the fact "that a human female can make a sound like that"

@@altohippiegabber Well, I think she's quite aware that the male vocal tract can produce fry/scream timbres. But it's rarer to find women that do it -- I'm not surprised she'd never heard anything like it. Besides this, she's a classical voice instructor; from my time at the conservatory, I can confirm that metal techniques are far from common in classical vocal pedagogy classes.

Tatiana is for sure one of the most impressive vocalists of the last 50 years. The Pisces video does just barely scratch her abilities. She is an amazing live performer, she is an expression powerhouse, she is an awesome, intelligent lyricist, esp. great for writing in a second language. Her stage presence is one of a kind, she comes on stage and owns it before even singing one note. The range of her skills and genre experience is mindblowing. Never go wrong listening to Jinjer. Did I mention, that the whole band is pure awesomeness? Go on and review at least one more Jinjer song to see the range ...

This reaction is just a lovely timecapsule. Now in hindsight we now know that harsh vocals are just another tool in the vocal arsenal for rock/metal singers. Once you see Tatiana, Floor and Alissa using various degrees of fry and doing it day after day on tour... you realize how super talented they are.

Is "screaming" considered "singing"? Unequivocally, yes. It can vary in pitch, tone, timbre, volume, range, etc. Generated from the same resources and tools as more "traditional singers". Though application, implementation, and construction may be a bit different. There's distincf technique involved to generate not only the sounds but also to preserve the instrument and to do it safely. There's no way it can't objectively be considered singing, even if it's not someone's preference.

Well, as others have suggested, try Jinjer - "Teacher, Teacher" for the full on effect of how she can change her vocal on the spot within the same sentence in the song for just a few words, and then back again. Most vocal coaches say that it's extremely difficult to do, but she does it no problem. For another band with similar vocals, try Arch Enemy - "The Eagle Flies Alone" or "War Eternal."
