This is one of Heart's signature songs I've read, and I'm excited to see a live performance from 1976. Ann Wilson's voice blew me away in her cover of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" and having an opportunity to hear her in her prime is exhilarating. Ann says "Crazy On You" is about finding solace in thet arms of her boyfriend at the stressful state of the world, and I couldn't relate more!

Nancy said in an interview that she played that guitar intro slightly different from show to show so it didn’t get monotonous. Killer guitarist and vocalist in her own right.

There are not enough superlatives in the world to describe Ann and Nancy Wilson. No surprise that in the 70's they were often called the female Led Zeppelin. And this concert was largely towards the start of their careers, so they hadn't yet spent decades perfecting their craft. Yet Ann can segway between siren and banshee and Nancy, likewise but on guitar. One of my favourite bands of all time...

It's 1977, I'm turning 18 today and ,( IATSE Local 695 )and I am doing my internship. My co-workers, arranged for Ann to sing Magic Man to me. Afterwards, backstage, she walks back during break and gave this new 18 year old his first kiss.Retired after a 38 year career as one of IATSE Local 695 Chief Engineers and will never forget that one day on the job.

@@janislundy1609, That's actually incorrect. Heart released "Alone", in the late 80's, in which Ann Wilson was lead vocals. "These Dreams" was only #1, for 1 week. "Alone", which Ann Wilson sings lead...was # 1 for 2 weeks. I know it drives people crazy. But, there wouldn't be a "Heart" to fawn over, without Ann Wilson. She and sister Nancy are the driving force of Heart. And while Nancy is an amazing guitar player, and yes...she can also sing. She is nowhere near the powerhouse vocalist Ann Wilson. Im so sick of people tearing down and overlooking Ann.

I always thought she killed the intro then Ann came in sounding like she was already out of breath. Still a great performance but it felt like what was about to be one of the most epic renditions ever turned to her sounding like she was struggling to get the notes out like a normal human. Meanwhile I've seen other live performances where she effortlessly killed it.

What's really cool about that intro is that Nancy has said she improvised it every single time. She'd just do whatever she felt at the moment, then she'd roll that into the formal intro.

With a band they both called terrible, unprofessional, skill less amateurs who had no clue when to come in, read music or carry a tune properly. They got rid of all of them, and became a complete afterthought and relegated to "classic hit" tours. Sad really, their egos took over and they paid for it.

Yep eventually they fired or bitched about them enough they all left. Heart disappeared for several years after that then to salvage their careers they became Corporate Shills, and brought in corporate writers to write the drivel of the 80's as they became a sad image of whom they were with far less talented backing. Too bad, Ann always had the pipes. Last decade they have been fighting with each other on and off, doing their own gigs at small venues.

You can just look up Nancy praising Roger Fisher's style in an interview with Premier Guitar: "Roger is a really great, original guitar player. He was not a trained kind of a player, which is really one of the great things about him. He broke a lot of the molds that many players were stuck in and was a wild and wooly style of guitar player. I learned quite a bit from him about how to attack the electric, because I had always been an acoustic player. I wasn’t only an acoustic player, but I started playing the electric seriously with Heart. So he showed me a few ropes that really helped me along the way." And Ann praising Steve Fossen (bass) and Michael Derosier (drums) in a Professor of Rock video. Even with all the personal drama between them, Derosier has stated the sisters always trusted them to come up with their parts, not telling them how it should be. Not to mention Howard Leese of course who stayed with them for 23 years. Personal drama was what "broke" the band apart. And it's always good to remember every member of the band except one voted Roger out.

@@junkandcrapamen LOL Rock music isn't about technical perfection - it's about feel, soul and originality first of all, and Robert had a ton of all three, and also an insane range that no one could touch in the late 60's/early 70's before he suffered vocal cord damage. He also basically pioneered an entirely new rock vocal style - no rock singer sang in that type of high range with that much sexuality prior to Robert Plant. And since Robert was a huge influence and inspiration to Ann, I'm sure that she would wholeheartedly agree with your utterly asinine and disrespectful comment.

Ann's voice is like the sea. It can be calm and relaxing, and can be big and tremendously powerful. Even when she's singing the beginning of this song, you can feel the anticipation of something large and powerful on its way.

During Nancy's guitar intro, she started with the standalone piece "Silver Wheels". Then, during the opening of "Crazy On You", she mixed in some of the opening riff of "Hijinx". That was the bluesy part. So, you really heard her doing three different songs there.

This is an excellent choice. The acoustic intro by Nancy Wilson is so unique and iconic with its flamenco influences; Nancy is absolutely an underrated guitarist. And Ann's voice! The fact that she is able to blend emotional expression and technique so seamlessly is the reason she is one of the best to ever do it. This is probably my favorite Heart song, and I'm so glad you picked it to react to!

It's what makes this band so special- the 2 sisters so good in of their musical disciplines. I would be hard pressed to favor either Ann or Nancy in their contribution to the band, people will always favor the voice of a band but that guitar playing is phenomenal! This era of their music was by far, the best imho. Roger Fisher, Howard Leese, the other Fisher bro, the drummer, keyboards, everyone just makes it so creative, so danged good all together. With the Wilson sisters in front, there weren't many, if any, who did it a whole lot better in their day. This was a dynamite line-up, every one of them did their part better than most.

I listened to your analysis of Ann Wilson singing Barracuda and loved it. I'm a former professional opera singer, voice teacher and graduate of the New England Conservatory. I love how Ann's very bright, forward tone and almost like she's biting every note she sings which I feel represents her feelings about that horrible rumor. Her incredible range was unmatched. No, auto-tune, no in-ear monitors just pure unadulterated talent. I was a young lad when Heart came out and was just blown away by both sisters' talent.

What do you have against musicians hearing themselves? I guarantee the Wilson sisters used/use in ears when available. In ear monitors also make the sound better for the audience and easier to mix. The sound engineer doesn't need to worry about feedback onstage allowing for more volume, clarity and creativity.

@@junkandcrapamen It's pretty clear that you know something about sound engineering and that wattsun has never done live sound engineering or sung on stage. Anyone who ever has, knows that ALL singers want to hear themselves as clearly as possible. This has been done with monitors for a long time. Most people paid little attention to monitors until artists starting using headsets and in ear monitors. Now that the masses notice them, they imagine monitors did not exist prior to in-ears or that they were poor and only singers with "pure unadulterated talent" could sing in key.

@@Tessmage_Tessera Side fill monitors have been in use since 1961. Specialized angled cabinets and separate monitor mixers have been in use since 1970s. Effects processing has been done since the 40s. You should look this stuff up before making uninformed assumptions.

We aren't talking about simple monitor cabs, we're talking about in-ear wireless monitors, auto-tune and similar modern tech that did NOT exist back then. I'm 61 years old and this is some of the music we listened to in Junior High, at parties and just chillin' with friends in the 70s. To see someone who is way, way younger then me enjoy it so much and who understands it from a professional standpoint and can explain it so even the least musically inclined of us can understand it is just great to watch. I love Magic Man. I had a Magic Man (or so I thought at the time) of my own. We used to listen to this and Magic Man All the time. God I miss my youth l, jamming to Led Zeppelin and Heart, Scorpions, Cheap Trick, what a time in music to come of age. I have legit mild hearing loss from those days and loud car stereos, plus metal shows for decades. I regret nothing and still see shows every summer with my older son & his gf. I will go see live shows until they plant me. 🙌😎😂

The Intro is called Silver Wheels. It can be found on the Bebe Le'Strange album. They usually played that as a lead in to Crazy On You because it worked so well (it's on their Greatest Hits/Live album that order as well). She even throws in a little "Hijinx" from Dog & Butterfly in the partially improvised opening licks.

Nancy is a sweetheart. She taught me to play so many songs for nothing, just for kicks. A true bard. When she does this song, her intro up until right before it rocks-out is always ad-lib for fun.

Criminally underrated band, and I mean a band collectively, they were super tight back in the day, they put anything out there today to shame. I never really thought, oh wow look at those two girls, they just kicked total ass, just amazing musicians. I grew up on all this stuff and didn't realize how freaking good it was, you'll never hear anything like this again, todays music is garbage.

Years ago, a good friend had a stint playing in Heart. This gave me the amazing opportunity to meet both Ann and Nancy. Even after my friend moved on to another band, I continued to see them every time we were in the same city. I treasure the memories those two angels (plus Ben, Craig and Disco Debbie), gave me. They are so genuine, kind, and lead everything with love. Plus, I got to meet Carrie Underwood and share her 21st birthday because of Ann and Nancy.

One of the things I love about this performance is that the band members have been playing together long enough to really work well together. They have been performing this song long enough to knock off the rough edges. They haven’t been playing it for so long that they are bored and just going through the motions. A lot of reaction videos use performances from later in a band’s or solo artist’s careers when the performers have passed their primes. Everybody is at their peak here and it shows.

I learned to play this riff in 1976, a friend showed me how to do it. In 1992 I went into a guitar shop to buy my son an acoustic guitar for Christmas and played the riff. I got a round of applause. 😄

To my mind, this is the best video of all time. Nancy's intro is amazing and iconic. Ann's voice is one of the best ever. The song is wonderful. The performance is unbelievable, and the way it was filmed and the look of everything on stage is perfect. And the wind blowing their hair is the cherry on top.

The image of Nancy Wilson in the spotlight, hair blowing in the wind, so intimately and beautifully playing her guitar, is forever burned into my brain. And the way you can literally SEE and FEEL her gather up her rockstar aura for the beginning of the actual song is so powerful. An absolute icon. Then as she starts marching across the stage, the lights come up and the full band begins to play. Then, suddenly, Ann explodes onto the stage with so much power and presence and the song has begun in full. Best rock intro ever, without a doubt.

Watched Heart blow ELO off the stage back in the summer of 1978, and ELO killed it that night themselves. They only had 45-50 minutes as the opening act, and they pretty much avoided any balladry. Ann just beat the audience into submission with her vocals that night. Still one of the greatest individual performances in a band setting I've ever seen.

First and foremost, thank you for giving Nancy her due. I know that as the Charismatic Voice, we’re here for the reaction to the vocalists, but the acoustic guitar work in this song helps accentuate the power of Ann’s vocals. I’m always reminded of one article I read about Heart many years ago. Nancy’s nickname growing up was Whiz-Fingers and no song showcases how on the nose this nickname was better than this one one, and this version in particular. The intro is not part of the studio version, it’s a melodic and graceful treat that she crafted to, as you said, transition into the meat of this song. When it gets a little blues riffs start kicking in, that’s the start of the canonical song intro. And long-time fans pick up on the traditional sections of the song. That said, Ann’s vocals are amazing when she comes in. What an amazing, powerful voice.

I have always been so impressed by her precision. So many singers have to slide into notes so they don't land flat, or sharp (but usually flat). When she slides into notes, it's entirely an artistic choice, but when she wants to hit a note clean, she just hits it. Such a phenomenal vocalist.

My dad saw them perform in Vancouver before they got their big break in the 70’s. He knew they were gonna be a huge success. My uncle from Ireland said the same thing to us in Canada about U2 before they became a huge hit. Love all the beginning stories of the bands I grew up to love and get to know so well ❤

I love her, but not the best. I’ve got a whole slew of singers with better chops in my head, but when it comes to rock she’s in the top five ever women of rock. I rank her second to Pat Benatar and possibly Amy Lee. When Tina Turner does a rock song then I can heap her on top too. Ann does a lot of yelling in hard songs and you’ll find her inconsistent depending on when you hear her. I’ve seen her live several times over the decades and she is really good, but records better. Dog and Butterfly is one of my favorite songs ever, so I’m a big fan, just being objective.

I'd put Annie Lennox, Linda Ronstadt, Gladys Knight, Siouxsie Sioux (of Siouxsie and the Banshees), Florence Welch (Florence + the Machine), Shirley Manson (Garbage), Tina Turner, and Pat Benatar in the upper echelons. I have a few favorites in that list, but again that's just personal taste.

This whole band is amazing. The combined vocals in that pre-chorus are powerful - a springboard for Ann. All of the instrumental work is stellar. A friend was the sound engineer for another famous band of the day. He was invited by Heart's sound company to hear Heart in some stadium, in the hope that he would choose their sound system for his band's next tour. Knowing nothing about Heart, he expected to technically assess the system. He did not expect to be blown away by the band. In answer to my question, his response was, "Yeah, they actually are that good". Thanks for reviewing this gem from my youth.

I love the live versions of Crazy on You, as they all seem to open with Nancy just playing the main riff and then whatever the hell she feels like mixing it up with. Just phenomenal playing. Ann's vocals on this track have just incredible, intense, passionate emotion to them. There's an edge of desperation, almost unhinged, desire behind her singing on this track.

You've got to do a reaction of Heart's performance at Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin in 2012. It's a version of "Stairway to Heaven" that builds and builds leaving the surviving members of Zeppelin in tears. I, too, fell into tears when I first watched and listened. I absolutely love your reactions. I also appreciate your insight as it is obvious you are extremely knowledgeable about the mechanics of singing and music, in general.

Ann & Nancy are both powerhouses. Great singer songwriters; as anyone who points to Zeppelin as their primary influence should be. You really should see the Kennedy Center honoring Zepplin performance by Heart, with Jason Bonham on drums, orchestra & choir. Magnificent!!! And you know when you’ve got the President & First Lady in the audience rockin’ out to your cover, you know you nailed it. 💙💙

Its amazing how moving a powerful performance can be. Its always inspiring to see skilled humans giving their very best right in the moment when it counts. That is why live music played with real instruments will always be the benchmark. It requires the musicians to bring all of their talent to bare at that exact point along with their bandmates. No second chances, no do-overs, nail it or nothing.

I was lucky to get last minute tickets from a friend who worked backstage at the Garden State Arts Center in NJ in the mid 80's. Cheap Trick opened for Heart and I love Cheap Trick but Heart blew them away. Totally on point and it was a stellar performance ❤ They sounded even better than studio.
