Is this the perfect Halloween song? V-chips and surveillance plus major creepy vibes from this music video, what's not to be spooked of? I've needed more System Of A Down to add to my library of most recent loves, and continuing down the rabbit hole of one of my now favorite vocalists, Serj Tankian.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to System Of A Down performing "Spiders" for the first time.

@TheCharismaticVoice Have you ever tried varying your video structure? For example; I love your initial reaction in realtime, but get worn out by you then rewinding the moment once or twice to elaborate. I would love an initial play through of the song, and seeing your reaction in a single take; and then you going back though it in more detail (with pauses) on the second run.

I'd highly recommend their song "Forest", the vocals are haunting in a tortured soul kind of way with sudden shifts that'll have you transfixed. Also, with Halloween just around the corner and Christmas not that far behind, I'd recommend "Bounce" which has what I can only describe as a "Nightmare Before Christmas" vibe to it.

System of a Down shaped me as a person a ton, their music is almost like nothing else and you can feel the emotion that oozes from it. Due to getting those emotional music hooks sunk into me at an early age it inspired me to find ways to have creative outlets for myself with music. I now play piano and drums, more jazz focused now adays but SOAD was the first time I could feel something so vividly from music and it always stuck with me.

A note on vocal tuning: this song was released in 1998. I'm going to guess that means it was recorded in 1997. Autotune technically existed, but it was in its infancy. Based on the year and the people involved, I'm guessing the album was recorded straight to tape and mixed on a console. So there would have been very little room to do any sort of editing beyond the typical splicing and vocal comping you got back in the analogue days.

Autotune-esqe tools have been around for decades. Sure they weren't called "Autotune", but pitch-correction has absolutely been used in productions for decades. Plenty of producers have debunked this idea that early artists didn't use pitch correction in their recordings. The Eventide Harmonizer was invented in the mid 1970s and even further back (1920s) the Eltro Information Rate Changer could be used to make time and pitch adjustments.

It would be so cool to see a reaction from you to the Deftones. They too have influenced and paved the way for many other bands. They themselves have a lot of good songs but what always impressed me the most was their cover of "If only tonight we could sleep", by The Cure. For me pure goosebumps every time I hear it. Maybe Chino doesn't have the best voice, but it is absolutely recognizable. Change, Digital Bath, Minerva and all the other songs...Deftones definitely have their place in the history of rock/metal music.

Checked the comments first, I'm pretty sure Daron is harmonizing with Serj midway through this song and I was genuinely surprised that it wasn't mentioned. Their ability to fall in and out of harmonization and dissonance is so creamy; it's the biggest reason my heart broke when they first separated for solo endeavors (though obviously even solo they are all individually amazing humans that are overflowing with talent).

Great pick! If you want to cover more SOAD, the two I recommend most are Question and Suggestions. Question really showcases their harmonies along with some tricky time signatures, and it also has a long scream that is akin to (but not as insane as) The Grudge. Suggestions is just pure vocal insanity that has Serj sounding like 3 or 4 different people. When it comes to System vocals those are the two I highly recommend

The more I revisit their first album, the more unappreciated I feel it is. They hit big with the toxicity album, and SOAD kinda got ignored at the time (Steal this album was also great imo). I never clicked with the mezmerize/hypnotize albums; I don't think I connected with Daron doing vocals when Serj was just there. Why would you have anyone else carry the main harmony when you have Serj 😂?

Interesting how you mentioned the static element. Never thought of that. From what I understand this song is about the powers that be controlling electronic information and thus controlling us. I suggest Holy Mountains and Lost In Hollywood (Darin is lead vocals and Serj harmonizes) next.

This song/album came out before "The Matrix"(if you were referring to the movie). Album released in 1998. This is off their first self titled album. The other 3 you listened to were off "Toxicity", their second album. Glad you listened to this song. This album doesnt get the attention it deserves. Its raw, harsh, powerful and intense. Also quirky and goofy at times, but a masterpiece of art and creativity. I recommend "Sugar" off this album. It is their most well known song from this album and made them well known in the underground. try to find an uncensored tho. Takes a lot away from song if censored. Edit: For some interesting vocal analysis, and some good fun with an amazing song, I also recommend "suggestions".
