I admit, "Nessun Dorma" is one of my all time favorites, which makes me particular about the style and performance of the artist covering it. I knew coming in that these two have incredible sound in the a cappella world, as I adore what Home Free does. But can they pull off this opera aria?
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Austin Brown and Rob Lundquist of Home Free performing "Nessun Dorma" for the first time.

Rob was trained in opera when in college and was very nervous in doing this after 15 years. Austin was trained in musical theatre, so he has more of a classical crossover sound. Are they Pavarotti, no, but they do a very, very good job for what and who they are.

I love this version. Austin always blows me away with his agility and soring high notes, but Robb's a chameleon. In this, he sounds nothing like I've ever heard from him before. His rapping in the "Butts Medley". His blues in "End of the Road". His pop in "Never gonna Give You Up". His country in "Man of Constant Sorrow". They all sound different... and great!

Rob is always...ALWAYS ear candy. I've been amazed how many reactors were stunned by him when it is obvious what he had in his vocal cords by how much he holds back on other songs...always just enough to not override other singers. the nasality of Austin is very obvious but he's a lovely voice and I kind of like the crossover classical gist of the duo.

I really know nothing about opera but my father loved it and I grew up listening to it. To me the sound of their voices especially Rob's is just ear candy. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this and I've listened to it everyday. All the guys of Home Free are incredibly talented & versatile. But when it comes to mastering all different genre's of music no one does it better than Rob. Listen to him sing Joy to The World Hosanna concert, End of the Road, blue Ain't your color and Home Free Kearney, MO How Great Thou Art 6.17.2017 . You get a little taste of the power of Rob's voice sans microphone in that one. But you'll also get to hear how good all the guys sound under difficult circumstances. During a thunderstorm after walking up a hill in the rain, under a pavilion with no mics. Just their beautiful voices.

Another artist you should listen to; Tracy Chapman. She has such a beautiful powerful voice. There's a live version of her song "Fast car" at Wembley, it's her on a podium with just a mic and a guitar and it's incredible. Her vocals sound even better than they do on the perfectly mixed album (although the song deserves a full band). She's able to get 60.000 people to go quiet and pay attention with her singing in mere seconds.

I could listen to Rob sing opera like this all day long. He was classically trained. It's fun for a lot of people who only know rock and pop to see classically trained people learn about pop and rock as though boring old "classical" music can't hold a candle to it. It flows into my heart. For me he will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers. It's not often that I listen to songs by opera singers 5 times and more in a row. But here it is. I was surprised to hear them do this aria so well, especially Rob. You mentioned Pavarotti, I think he was a wonderful tenor but my favorite version of this Aria is by Jussi Bjoerling. Their is a recording of him, Birgit Nilson, Renato Tebaldi and Giorgo Tozzi doing the complete opera. I have it on vinyl. I don't if it is available any longer. I have a listened to many tenors in my day and I believe Jussi Bjoerling is, at the very least, one of the best if not the best. I enjoyed your review of Rob and Austin singing this aria. I have listened to you sing and watched a number your reviews. It is obvious to me that you are not an amateur. You are so vivacious in your approach to the music. It is very refreshing. Thank you for being there, this old singer enjoys you. I have heard a lot of people attempt this aria and do it very poorly. It is nice hear these young men do it so well. I'm glad this finally made it to reaction day - Thank you Elizabeth for your open and honest interpretation. I also am a fan of Pavarotti's version of this Puccini masterwork, but for raw emotion and power, my favorite version of this will always be the first time I ever heard it - the movie was "The Great Caruso" and the singer was Mario Lanza. The song was pure magic and was my entre' into the classical realm. There are several versions of Mr. Lanza's recordings out here on KZfaq and please, check out his version of Nessun Dorma. Impeccable!!!

Loved this reaction! I really, really hope Rob does more like this. I just love his tone. Also, I agree there’s more country in Austin’s part, but if he really wanted to go there, he could be a fine operatic lyric tenor. The vocal quality is clearly there. This was a really fun experiment! Maybe someone should write a cowboy opera just for these guys!!

Congrats on the baby, Elizabeth. Also, the hats are a reference to when they recorded "O Holy Night" and, I believe, "Angels We Have Heard on High" in what appeared to be the sanctuary of a church - and the cowboy hat specifically. Chris left it on during the taping, and he got a lot of flack (rightly so, in my opinion, except that I'm not sure that it was still being used as a church). And notice, it looks like Chris' hat. Great (second) reaction. I do love their voices in this. Take care!

I’ve heard so many variations of this aria over the years. And if the singer/singers don’t pull off that finally then the entire aria falls on it’s face. This was and amazing version!

Regardless of the Technical differences of technique it is, Undoubtedly Beautiful...and as much as I do understand what you speak of concerning Operas specifics it grabs my ❤️ and makes my chest heave with emotion. Yes, technically Pavarotti was the Master not just of his craft and this particular Aria. His performance demonstrates this, but as specific as Opera Singer's are few have or touched me this much. And Puccini's Turnadot is very familiar to me. Only Kathleen Battle's singing have touched me so. Though in the context of an experience when Red in Shawshank Redemption explains, To this day I have no idea what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is I don't want to know. Some things are left best unsaid. I would like to think they were singing about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words and makes your ❤️ ache because of it. I tell you those voices soared higher and farther than anyone in this gray place dares to dream. Like some beautiful bird flapped into our little cage and made those walls dissolve away. And for the briefest of moments everyman last man in Shawshank...was free.
