In this week's video I explore the rich, fascinating history of provençal fabrics. These colourful, summery prints immediately evoke the lifestyle and food of the South of France, but where do the designs come from, and how were they made? I go to find the answers in the museum and archive of the SOULEIADO company, which was has been making these stunning fabrics since 1806, and whose clothes I've adored all my life!

Mummy is absolutely amazing. Even though separated from Percy, I think all the work in the garden has made her very agile, happy, productive, and satisfied with the accomplishments being achieved at Lalande. We love her!

You might have outdone yourself here. The way you cut this together between the talk at home and the walk through the museum was masterful! Thank you for bringing us along. I am learning so much and this feels almost like visiting in person. All these tours with owners, directors, historians, guides, etc feel so special and personal for me as a viewer.

I once visited a Solieado shop in France, and while I loved everything they sold, I had no appreciation of its history and fabrication techniques. You have, once again, done a excellent job of educating, entertaining, and encouraging creativity !!

I am the same that is why I have to check my cases in storage where I packed my purchases from Soleidad. It looked good in the shop but I lost interest once I carted it all the way home. Stephanie & Isabel have a way of inspiring us to look at things in a different light.

Right. After than fabulous inspirational video I am now going to find the 2 antique Indian wood blocks that have been kicking around on a dusty shelf for years. I found them in a charity shop for £2 each. Armed with a white vintage cotton sheet (also thrifted) I will have some fun tomorrow printing fabric while the rain pours outside. That’s Tuesday sorted. If the are Indian then they would have been used to make chintzes which is what the provencal textiles were based on- not just the technique but also the designs, motifs and colours.

Perhaps my favourite blog yet! I am a fabric artist/quilter and have half metre cuts of Provencial fabrics in my stash - I am now motivated to make handbags with these!! I have made 5 trips from Canada to France and have visited many regions, but am yet to travel to Avignon and will DEFINITELY visit the Soleiado Company - Thank you Stephanie!!!

In my first country house in Normandy called ' Le Chateau' I used these fabrics in the kitchen back in the 80's, it was really pretty and complemented the patchwork of blue and white tiles over the Cornue cooker. In later years I worked with the daughter of the Demery family who is a fashion designer, her parents had sold the company. In St Remy de Provence there is a gorgeous chateau also belonging to the company I think, an incredible estate in the town. I also lived in Nimes where similar fabrics were used in the gauchos shirts and ladies headscarves. Thank you for another wonderful video. xoxoxo

Stephanie, I have been enjoying your vlogs for a while now. I have to say my heart skipped a beat when you showed all those print blocks. They are beautiful! You see I am a potter and use wooden blocks like that to create texture in clay for various pieces of my work. I enjoy searching for new and unique block prints. @@lolodee3528 Unfortunately there is a darker history attached to this. After the invention of the textile print machines, the British deliberately killed off the hand painted/printed chintz industry in India. It had widespread effects because everybody in Asia wanted Indian hand painted chintzes.

Spectacular documentary. *Thank you*. I’d feel ever so privileged being able to visit this museum, the region of Provence and wear any item made with such detailed elegance. Wow, I’m gobsmacked! Fascinating! I think I must watch this one over again at least one more time. Really, this episode rivals the cultural shows on television. When I first discovered your channel, pre-lockdown, I almost left it because I wasn't interested in watching partying and revelry with rich strangers. But since lockdown, the channel has developed a family feel, and rather than endless parties, you show gardening and DIY projects, and now these wonderful cultural episodes. The art history major in me loves those. I look forward to each episode, and to catching up with the familiar faces--and animals, which make such a wonderful ensemble working and playing together.

SO so so so stunning! I've always love beautiful, intricate fabrics and things, but always thought they were the reserve of fancy houses and big wallets. Thanks to your vlogs I know what key words to search and have found more affordable ways to surround myself with lovely things. I recently replaced my living room curtains with block printed cloth, and last night bought a face mask made with a William Morris print. Love!

Loved seeing the fabrics and the printing blocks, I went to Provence when my daughter was young and bought her a skirt. I remember it swished because it was a full circle and tiered. My week is never complete without watching your vlogs, and I SO love this one! Thank you, Stephanie, I have learned again a lot from you, and my interest for France has grown more and more. What a fascinating, intricate process of creating such beautiful fabric! Hello from Alberta, Canada, Such lovely fabrics and- I am also a fan of anything French, and have several small pieces acquired on eBay... thank you so much for delightful tour and history. My little pieces will be the stars of my sewing room!

Thank you so much Stephanie and Isabel for taking us on this tour of history and fashion. As a hobby sewist my little heart just beat a little faster realizing what i was watching. I may never make it to France but if I did this would have to be a day stop for me.
