This week I share one of the magnificent cultural treasures of this area of France with you - Limoges porcelain! I've chosen to start with Bernardaud, who have been making porcelain in Limoges for five generations. They also own the Ancienne Manufacture Royale de Limoges, which reproduces extraordinary dinner services which were enjoyed by Louis XV, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. But far from only showcasing their past triumphs, Bernardaud has continued its long tradition of working with great artists, from Marc Chagall to Jeff Koons!
Escape to the chateau with ’The Chateau Diaries’ 🏰
In 'Sundays at the Chateau', chatelaine Stephanie answers all your questions about life in the 16th century Chateau de Lalande, and introduces you to the cultural and gastronomic treasures of France ❤️
A very special thank you to all of you who have become Patrons of the Chateau de Lalande. You have made The Chateau Diaries one of the top 1000 Patreon accounts in the world, and have transformed not only out lives here, but the future of this beautiful chateau! I’m overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity. On behalf of this beautiful chateau that will continue to survive and flourish because of you, thank you!!!

My grandmother’s best friend did the same thing! She only bought one serving in every pattern she liked. She bought a place setting once a year and when you were invited for dinner she’d choose a a particular setting with you in mind. It always made me feel so special when I visited. Really helped me fall in love with porcelain and I became a potter when I grew up! I am so glad someone else has the same idea.

I am a restaurant supplier and rep for quite a long list of China manufacturers. Porcelain of this quality is really never used in American Restaurants any longer because of the price. Even country clubs do not invest at this level any longer. I’m guessing one dinner plate from this factory would be $60 to $80 per plate.(retail much more) Truly it is art. I had a factory tour once of the Homer Laughlin China Co. In West Virginia USA and their artists sit at the exact foot powered spinning wheels in this vlog. They let us each do two plates each. As many rings as we wanted to. Then 2 weeks later they arrived to our homes where they had put our names in each plate’s center and fired the plates. Kind of cool. I really like bone china myself. The more bone content the more transparent the plate.

I spent the summers with my grandmother on her farm in Kentucky when I was a teenager. She had two set's of china, one Blue willow and the other Haviland, and a full service of sterling silver. When I was younger, before I was a teenager, she only used the china and silver for special occasions, holidays, birthdays, etc., but as she got older we started using them everyday. It was lovely!

I could not agree more! First, she is so natural, 2nd she educates in a way that does not come off in a condescending way - its just like a great friend is telling you something, 3rd - so is so incredibly kind and POSITIVE!! I cannot think of someone who deserves success more! We love in LaLa Land where its - well, lets just say the antithesis of all that is La Lande and Stephanie- so to see such kindness and positivity- well, very refreshing, especially in such a trying time. 💐

I love your collection. In Australia I have never seen anything made in France. I buy mix and match plates also from charity shops, and I use daily. Table look always amazing. I wish you could see. If you don't use teapots for cups, plates, you need to wet them few times each year, keep water in jugs to prevent crazing and open display unit door every 6 months to get breeze in side display unit. If you find anything crazed but is beautiful and you like to kept but because of craze you don't want to buy. Put item in water, spoon of baking powder and soak for 24 hours . Most of craze will look white.

Stephanie ... I haven't read all the comments so I don't know if anyone else mentioned this but ... I think the flowers on the set your parents gave you when you were 22, are Poppies. I could be wrong but Carnation leaves are straight and narrow and not too large. The flower buds also look like Poppy flower buds. :)

@thechateaudiaries loved this vlog and I’m quite interested in plates. I see you have a lot of the blue and white in your kitchen. Spode? I don’t know a whole lot about this kind of stuff but my grandmother did and my family is from England. She left me a lot of china that I will have to look into but I do have two blue and white plates that are very very old but they are delft. I’ve tried to look up the markings on the back but it’s hard to tell how old they are I know she told me to take very good care of them. Do you own delft? Stephanie I’m so glad I found your channel I like you very much you remind me a lot of my grandmother in personality and the way you speak. She was my favorite person in the world and when you are talking I can literally close my eyes and hear her. It brings me a lot of joy. 💛

Wonderful--I love Limoge Porcelains. My mother had a set of white with gold rim that had been her mother's, I believe. Porcelain was always my favourite clay body to work with, as a Potter. It feels so smooth running through one's hands on the wheel. Oliver, you are so very dear, getting Stephanie a beautiful, historic plate with her favorite yellow band at the rim, and matching your favorite beautiful piece. I have 2 Limoges services - one by Havilland and the other Pouyat. I also have a few large D&C tureens that are spectacular. My daughter borrowed them from me 5 years ago and I think she doesn’t intend to return them. Luckily I have 2 toddler granddaughters who will inherit it and my mother’s Real Old Willow set and my wedding set that my daughter also borrowed. I sold antique Limoges for a few years that started when I sold my home and downsized. I also sold Charles Field Havilland Civil War era Limoges. I kept quite a few tea sets that are from1850s to about 1875. The pieces I sold were purchased by people in China since French porcelain and luxury goods have been aspirational since the 17thc. and Americans had moved onto 60s styles. The Chinese loved the really old pieces and the Pouyat nouveau plates and settings. My Limoges obsession came after finding a crate In my home’s coal room which I never used. It was just one of several rooms I never used or bothered with. I had an interior wall leak in there and the crate had started to disintegrate from the moisture until one day I saw a cup in the doorway. I went to see what it was doing there and it was a Pouyat cup. I unearthed it and another crate that was there and it was 12 8 piece settings that creepily matched the pattern on my dining room chairs. None were broken or even really looked used. There was also a Havilland clover service with a set of silver fish forks and knives. I assume it belonged to the original owners who had passed almost 50 years before. Turned out that they were Irish and probably ate fish on Friday back in the day. When restoring my home years before we knocked down a wall that covered a few feet of the room and I found a beautiful 2 pc light pink silk sheer bedspread with a separate lace overlay in tissue in back of a shelf that had been hidden away. It had a tiny “France” label. Unfortunately the slow leak that was hidden in the coal rooms walls cost a considerable amount to remedy but even though I no longer own the house I still have the Limoges. I think the translucency, delicacy and toughness of the pieces hooked me into adding to my collection of Havilland pieces. Now that I write this I have to wonder why they basically hid all these pieces. The China could just have been stored by someone but the silk and lace pieces were definitely hidden. Must be an interesting story but I’ll never figure it out now.

Oliver's gift just had me crying!!! What a tremendously beautiful thing to do. There is hope for humanity and it's in France right now. Thank you, Olliver, for restoring my faith.

What a lovely vlog! Stephanie and Oliver, I wonder if you’ve ever seen the cathedral stained glass windows by Chagall in Mainz? It’s a stunning juxtaposition of a medieval building with modern stained glass that is captivating and well worth the trip. And did any of you enjoy how adorable the tour guide in the factory was? 🤤
