If you're into the Chiaogoo system, you can just as well use the 13cm tips and the 5cm cables and build those yourself (I compared and the sizes are nearly the same). Which has the advantage of getting the awesome tips of that brand and also less friction between needle and cable, provided that you connect the pieces as strong as you can. For me that is the best solution. Rather expensive, though - so probably only makes sense if you love to knit socks.

I have some FlexiFlips and have watched some reviews. I haven't really given them a fair trial yet but after watching your video I'm anxious to try again. The very best tip you provided, that I haven't seen elsewhere, is resting the back needle in the space between thumb and forefinger. Thank you!

amarasharon my first few rounds were kind of "stabby" and I couldn't keep that back needle out of the way. Resting it in the crook between your fingers really makes a difference. Happy knitting.

Weren't there some knitting needles put out several years ago shaped similarly to almost a boomerang shape? My foot is oddly shaped and I've no toes due to osteomyelitis. I am really wanting to knit my own socks but I don't think these needles would work for me due to thickness of my foot as well any thoughts??

I am working on a project that requires a total of 15 stitches cast on and worked in the round, with increases made on later rounds...how is it worked with a beginning of 15 stitches.
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on a few things like the type of cast on you are using. Clearly, you can't divide your stitches evenly onto two needles. You'll need to figure out a way to divide the stitches that makes sense for your project and you may need to use markers to help you with the placement of your increase. There's no rule that says there have to be the same number of sts on each needle. Experiment and see what works for you.

Thank you, I am so used to using double points for this, I guess I was having a hard time figuring this out in my head...I hadn't been using markers, just did my increases after each needle...I will just have to start using markers, I tried knitting 15 stitches on my flexi's and it is going to be a new trick with these old hands. Thank you for answering so quickly.

Please, could you tell me, since this was two years ago, could you please tell me the best needles, in your opinion, for using dpns for sock knitting? Is it the flexi flips or have you found another now? I just got sock yarn for a steal from Premier and I really need to upgrade to the dpns I got for the cheapest I could from Amazon when I was first learning to knit Please and thank you ❤️

I don't know that there is a "best" style of needles for sock knitting. It's a personal preference for each knitter. Personally, I learned to knit socks in dpns. Now days I usually use either the FlexiFlips or two 20-inch circs when I knit socks. Depends on my mood and what style of heel my sock has.

@@thechillydog thank you for responding so quickly. You never leave me hanging and I appreciate that so so much. I find the magic loop method too cumbersome for me and would be fine with dpns but definitely wanted to get better than what I have. When I looked on KZfaq your video was the first I clicked on. Your videos have clarified things for me before so I was quite taken with the product after watching you. I would just like to be able to knit socks more easily 💛 So I have options, is there a brand you would suggest in general ? I feel quite overwhelmed trying to sift through all varieties of dpns and circulars. (I knit continental) Thank you in advance 💛💛💛

If possible, I highly encourage going into a yarn shop to get needle recommendations. Not only can their staff explain the differences between needle styles and brands, you can also usually take the needles for a test drive and knit a sample before you buy to see if the they feel good for what you're making. I mostly use addi needles. The needles are well designed and crafted, the company uses manufacturing methods that are as environmentally friendly as possible, and their employees are fairly paid.

Great tute! 🥰👏 Thank you. I have knit sweaters but am new to sock-knitting. Can’t seem to locate a tute which demonstrates knitting the whole sock including toe and heel with Addi Flexi-Flips? I would appreciate any recommendations you can make for such a resource for beginners like me who are new to Both the Flexi needle type and to the challenges of knitting socks. :)

Your timing is perfect, Bonnie! I am doing a sock knit along that begins on May 9, 2019. We're going to be knitting my Line Drawing Socks and I'll be demonstrating how to use the FlexiFlips for the entire sock and sharing a bunch of general sock knitting tips and tricks along the way. I think it's a great project for new sock knitters. Here's a link to the KAL intro video, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMmIY9eD3Za3eY0.html. During the KAL you can ask questions and share your progress in the Makers' Mercantile Group on Ravelry, www.ravelry.com/discuss/makers-mercantile/3906648/1-25. There's a link to the pattern in the Line Drawing Socks discussion thread as well. I hope you'll join us and knit along. :)

Does Addi say what metal is used in these needles?
@thechillydog

I don't recall anything specific on my packaging, but I'm pretty sure the needles are nickel-free, primarily brass and then they undergo a plating process.

I have looked all over youtube, why won't anyone tell us beginners how to cast on with these things?
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 5 жыл бұрын
I'm planning a tutorial on that for early next year, but it's not nearly as complicated as people imagine. If you're a magic loop knitter, casting on is exactly the same except you don't have to fuss with sliding the needles and cord around. If you're a dpn knitter, you just cast on half your stitches onto one needle then half onto the second needle instead of dividing your stitches onto 4 needles. But, I understand that some people like to actually see the whole process in action, so like I said. I'll be demonstrating it here, soon.

@@thechillydog Thank you so much for your reply :) I am new to knitting. I have never used dpns or magic loop. I am also dyslexic so depend on youtube for visual demonstrations in order to learn. It's incredibly frustrating that out of lots and lots of youtube videos on these needles nobody shows how to commence. I think sometimes, once people are experienced they lose touch with how even the simplest things can appear daunting, confusing and mysterious to the uninitiated. I managed to find only one video on casting on and starting but it was too fast to follow and the knitter was using that weird slingshot method that seems to be used a lot in the U.S. so it was just more baffling to me sadly. I wish I could follow written instructions, it would make my life so much easier.
@thechillydog
@thechillydog 5 жыл бұрын
@@igobymanynames1684 It's funny you mention some videos going to fast because I often worry that I am going to slow and repeating a step too many times when I make videos. You just eased one of my worries. Thank you. And I almost hate to say this, but my video is going to use the weird slingshot method. I almost always use either the long tail cast on or the old Norwegian cast on when I work in the round. Both use the slingshot. Those cast ons are fairly stretchy, which is especially important for projects worked in the round, and both create less of a jog at the beginning of the round than cast ons that are worked from left to right.
@igobymanynames1684
@igobymanynames1684 5 жыл бұрын
@@thechillydog I can imagine it's very hard to pitch the pace right when you're basically tutoring a camera and imagining the viewer instead of them being there. I use a very basic cast on, I can't currently understand what's going on with that slingshot method, even when explained slowly. I guess too many movements and left rights etc. My dyslexia is an ordering information version (my spelling and writing is fine), I just get the order of things mixed up, so that sling shot thing makes my brain melt! lol

@thechillydog
@thechillydog 4 жыл бұрын
There's a reason for forming stitches on the shaft of the right needle. If you work on your needle tips (on any knitting needles, not just the FlexiFlips) the stitches/fabric will be very tight. If you want a consistent and "proper" gauge, stitches should be the same circumference as the needle shaft, not the needle tips.

I believe you’re overthinking it. You just cast on as you would with DPNs. The only difference is that you cast-on to two needles with FlexiFlips while you need to manage at least three needles when using DPNs. I really don’t cast-on to DPNs because of that issue.
