Learn how to purl the 1st stitch on your needle (without creating extra yarn overs) when knitting small circumference projects like socks, gloves and mittens. This works for projects worked on dpns, flexible dpns, 1 or 2 circular needles and the magic loop method for both English and continental style knitters.

Knitting sock always makes me stressed🤣especially the heal. I've been knitting many socks in the past and then I stop knitting sock for quite some times and here I am learning all over again. Thanks your for the tutorial, need some time and practice before I can start again.😊

When ever i have a purl as the first stitch like this especially socks i always slip that stitch to the back sole needle ten purl it as it is much easier to work the purl at the end verses as the first stitch plus i get a tighter stitch as well since purls tend to be looser. It works for me doing it this way with magic loop.

Thank you for this easy-to-understand video. Am trying to learn (and practice) magic loop to ready myself for a particular project. Just could not get the hang of making a purl stitch as 1st stitch in new row without creating an unwanted add'l stitch. Your video helped me understand what I was doing wrong. So glad I found this. Hi Ellen - Another excellent tutorial! One issue I also encounter when knitting a purl stitch after a needle change in small circumference knitting is a more obvious "ladder" in my work. I usually rearrange my stitches on my needles in order to avoid this (if possible, depending on the pattern), by ensuring there is a knit stitch at the beginning of each needle. Do you have any tips? Thank you! .

Sometimes laddering happens when the yarn is too loose between sts, but it can also happen if you are pulling things too tight. There's no singular solution. Using a different style of needle (magic loop vs dpns, for example) can sometimes minimize the problem. Or, and this is going to sound strange, try knitting with your project inside out.
