I have a 2010 model with 33,000 km on it, mostly by me. I can’t believe I have had no mechanical or electrical faults with it. I’m astounded by how it corners, it’s power and how good it is as a piece of engineering. It is also hard to believe you can buy something that good for such few $. Thank you Honda and Japan!

My Vfr800i (non VTEC) is a great bike - the handling is neutral, the engine is very tractable and whilst a beginner can safely learn on it, an experienced rider can have a ball whilst holding his own against much more powerful machines. Weight at low speeds is the only thing to watch for a beginner, but the saddle is relatively low. The engine pulls hard in any gear with a top end that excites, but doesn't intimidate. I've come from inline 4's where the top end goes off like a nuclear bomb... the v4 takes time to master... the trick is to ride the torque whilst still at max lean angle. You'll shoot out of corners harder and as fast as guys on fireblades. ( I know. I regularly ride on road and track with some of the best ) But you still have a reasonable top end to play with too. The handling is neutral and confidence inspiring. Set the line, start to accelerate and the bike won't deviate, no matter what the road delivers. I've ridden this bike kneedown on track, 2 up, fully laden through the Alps, 2 up to the shops and back - it will honestly do whatever you need it to do, including 2up, knee down madness on normal roads. Negatives? No on board storage. Brakes aren't amazing. That's about it. Positives? in addition to the above? ...great engine braking which helps you be smooth and that V4 Roar from an after marked end can - with its evil little crackle-and-pop on the over-run... addictive.

I changed to Carbone Lorraine Brake Pads XBK5 on my 2001 and now it stops just fine now . I also added a Beringer master cylinder after my hand operation but the pads were to main thing. Great bikes , Gear driven cams and a 21 litre tank .Good handing on back roads . Bought it new in 2002 with a massive discount and coming up to 100,000 km of the best fun on 2 wheels

I used to have one of these ,the high exhaust version with Two Brothers cans and full luggage.. It's the only bike I've regretted selling and I've had many. The build quality is outstanding and in red they look not unlike a Ducati, only they are a lot better than Ducati's. Plenty fast enough, handle very nicely and sound gorgeous.A bit thirsty though and not a very good range for a touring bike. Good video.👍

I’m old enough to remember when the CB750, late 60’s early ‘70’s, was regarded with suspicion. People seem to forget that disrespect now that the CB has won worldwide loyalty. My hunch is that the VFR is a victim of a similar loss of historical knowledge and appreciation of sophistication. Yep, it’s neither a Duc nor a Beemer, but it is the closest thing Mr. Honda gifted real world motorcyclists. Regardless of which generation of VFR, it’s gem.

Hey Carl. Yes it has gear indicator and everything else you need on the dash. I’m only short and don’t have a problem moving it around. I get 400-450klm per tank. 21litre tank. As soon as you move it feels as light as my 250. Mirrors fold back and I filter on it all the time except when I have my panniers on for touring. I have done 700 klm days on it with no problems. I’m 52 as well. I’m am so impressed with it and so many people love to come and look at it

Bought my Fi new on a 2000 plate...what a bike. I have now had it 20 years and it still brilliant. This year decided to get a new one...guess what? @@robinhoatcity I'm on my 2nd 5th gen vfr800 which I love. I'd be really interested in your comparison between the old model (mines a 1999) and the latest version. Of course the most important thing would be; is it worth upgrading to the new bike and if so, why?

Hello Mr Fish. Glad you've finally made acquaintance with the VFR800. I swapped my Versys 650 for one about 8 years ago. Went into my local bike shop (for a new helmet) and you've guessed the rest lol. Like you I initially found the riding position rather sportier than I'd been used to but within a month I was so comfortable. At 5'6" though I was a little more compact. Mine was actually a 1999 pre-vtec model with gear driven camshaft but in all it's guises I still think it's one of the greatest bikes of all time. I sold mine after two years but miss it constantly. From time to time I check to see if it's still taxed - it is of course and it's nice to know someone is still enjoying it 👍

I've owned a 2005 for a number of years...great bike Vtech kicks in a lil sooner at 6800rpm....it's only abrupt if u haul back on the throttle otherwise smooth. Underseat exhaust looks sleek compared to having it on the side. Installed volt meter to keep an eye on charging (all bikes should have one as standard)...love the bike....a couple guys in my area have older versions of the 800 with 320,000k and 185,000k on theirs respectively.

@@henrybrewer1083 Hi Henry good to know you are enjoying the bike. As I am considering a bigger bike than I have at present I thought I would ask you for your opinion/fact. Does the VFR have a gear indicator on the dash, what mpg are you getting if riding around town on a run. Also I currently have a ninja 650 193kg wet and am a bit concerned about the 244kg wet figure for the VFR how have you found the 244kg when moving it around you know the carpark, out of the garage/ shed (I use a bike shed at the rear of my house) and generally moving around also when riding around town - is it good to filter on. I just thought of another point do the mirror fold back ? I hope you can come back to me thank you for your time.

Yeah, I wish I still had my 86 VFR 750 also. My 86 sounded far better than this bike with a 4 into 1 Kerker exhaust. I had vinyl stickers made up to make it look like a Bubba Shobert replica. Thanks for your review! I used to have a VFR 800FI from 2001, until I got involved in an accident and lost it. I loved that bike so much, that I kept it for 18 years and to be honest, I didn't think on buying a new one. After the accident I have been looking on the market for a new bike and your video was an influencer. My engine was the last one without VTEC and I remember a lot of people complained about it, so I was kind of nervous when I made the decision on buying a new VFR, as I didn't want to be comparing it with my former bike. Still getting used to it, but so far is just as you described in this video. And I got the silver one. I have to say that from the official Honda photo it looked more matte. I would prefer or more matte and less shinny, but it's a personal opinion. So far, the new changes seem a big improvement. Still not sure about the engine, as I just bought it and I didn't have the chance to throttle as I used to. Thank you!

I've loved the VFR since I first saw a friend's 1984 VFR 500. What an elegant, well-designed motorcycle the VFR is! In 2004, I went to a friend's parts warehouse to buy a beautiful red 2000 VFR that was there on consignment, but when I arrived at the parts warehouse with cash in-hand, someone had come in earlier that morning and bought the VFR. That day, I instead bought a 1998 V-twin VTR 1000F SuperHawk (FireStorm). In 2018, I almost bought a leftover 2017 VFR 800F instead of restoring and tricking-out my 1998 VTR 1000F. The VTR 1000F is a now a beast with a tricked-out and rebuilt low-mileage engine with high-compression JE pistons, titanium valves, Dicronite friction-reducing coating on piston walls, wrist pins, etc., a new Penske aftermarket shock, new outer fork tubes, Race Tech fork springs, new stock fork seals and bushings, braided steel brake lines, and 2017 VFR 800F clutch and front brake master cyclinders. The funny thing is that after I had the VTR 1000F rebuilt and shipped home from Atlanta, it cost the same amount in total that the leftover 2017 VFR 800F would have cost. I'm not very good at math. lol I love my VTR 1000F and it will run circles around a newer VFR 800F, but I will likely sell it out-right some day and then jump onto a low-mileage 2018 VFR. They run forever, they handle like a champ, and, with a shorty aftermarket exhaust, they sound like a hot-rodded small-block V-8: What an awesome sound! They also prove that a "classy," top-notch, sport-touring motorcycle does not have to be first on race day.

Nice video. I have a 2014 VFR800 Deluxe in a gorgeous metallic pearl white and I absolutely love it. The first thing I did was to replace the stock can with aTwo Bros and also installed the factory quick shifter. The sound of that V4 is beautiful, deep and with a sweet low rumble that only a V4 can make. The stock can makes the bike sound like a scooter, come on Honda! The quick shifter just makes the sporting nature of the bike just come out even more, love that quick shifter. The 2018 seems to be identical to the 14. It’s certainly not the fastest bike on the road, but it pulls real good down low and when it hits 7000 rpm the VTEC engages and it’s quick enough to get around almost any car without a problem. Handles good too, very graceful in the turns, but I can occasionally feel the 530lb wet weight. Pretty good with a passenger and trunk box, but she really is more sport than tour. She’s no wheelie popper but that’s just fine with me. Highly recommended!!

Douglas Houle The DCT sounds very interesting, I would like to try it on a bike. I have paddle shift auto in my car and that’s the only way I drive it unless I’m in stop in go traffic, then it’s in full auto. I think the new Goldwing DCT is a great option for a big touring machine.

I put a Delkevic Shorty Carbon Fiber exhaust, with baffle removed... sounds amazing, esp when VTEC kicks in, I also replaced the horn... (I couldn't hear the stock horn on the Highway) with a Stebel Nautilus Compact Mini Air Horn... now everyone hears me when I beep... Also did the Snorkel, Pair and Flapper mod (very simple to do.) Lastly, added some LED lights throughout the body for a touch of flair and safety when riding at night. It looks, rides, and sounds amazing... BTW the Mirrors are collapsible in either direction at least on the 2014 version, but they are hard and stiff to close.. which in my opinion is a good thing

I liked this review - one of the first I watched when looking for a bike. A year later I bought one in red although the silver looks great. I've only had it two weeks but it feels special and I love it - my other "bike" is a Vespa for running around in London, so I'm not fussed about being on a Fireblade or something likely to loose my license or my life in double quick time - nevertheless on UK roads it is rapid. I think the review covers a lot of the key reasons why you would like the bike, it looks great, the build quality and materials are lovely, it's smooth and with the SC project exhaust that came with the bike I bought the sound is amazingly addictive and you can actually see the wheel!!! Thanks Mr Fish for your entertaining and informative input.

Nice review and footage Mr. Fish. I have a 2014 VFR800 Deluxe in the gorgeous Pearl White Metallic paint and have installed a nice carbon can and the Honda quickshifter. Those few & simple mods really transformed that bike. The sound of that lucious V4 at idle and speed is like no other, especially when the VTEC is engaged. The quickshifter is fantastic!! More bikes should come with QS. I'm 56 and this is one of my favorite bikes in my two bike collection, the other being a very righteous 2014 FJR1300A. I purchased the VFR first and quickly realized how fortunate I was to cross paths with that machine. I agree with all that you said about the VFR, except the marriage part, funny stuff! I purchased the FJR about 3 years after the VFR and once again realized how fortunate I was to get her too. The FJR is outstanding in every way, but a really tall, true overdrive 6th gear to cruise at high speed around 3000 rpm or less would be appreciated. I don't think the new gen 6 spd FJR trans does that. I usually ride the FJR more often, but when I do get on the VFR she always puts a big smile across my face. Kudos & Peace

Please don`t laugh but I was the proud owner of a VFR 400RR for 8 yrs and loved it I sold it in 1998 ish(kids appeared and work lol) and returned to motorcycling and bought a CBR 600 F4 ULTIMA LIGHT, well I noticed it was a bigger footprint and a lot bulkier, But the bike's engine was flat as a fart until I hit 8000rpm and then it buzzed like an angry wasp and showed it`s spirit. It may be me but I liked the v4 power at any revs and think I am ready for a new v4. I remember catching all the new CBR`S GSXR`S 600`s and such in and out of a bend on my 400 and now I know why!! if you don`t rev the hell out of an inline 4 you get no squirt out of a bend. I also miss the natural engine braking of a V4 and truly miss the unadulterated power curve. Long live the v4 SO COME ON HONDA MAKE A NEW 1000cc V4 and thrill the hell out of your customers(cbr 1000 frame/mould would be a dream!!)

Great review, midlife crisis kicked in last year at age of 42, done my cbt in May and bought 125cc adventure bike, rode that for 3 months whilst I was training for mod 1 and 2 and passed my test in August last year and bought a Honda cb650r, just sold that yesterday and I have narrowed my next bike list to Honda vfr and Kawasaki z1000 sx, I just ride at the weekends with mates and the reason I want a bike like this is that I’m going to try and get my mrs out for rides also cb650r wasn’t great on motorways, wind blast is tiring on long days out, I need help to make my decision I love the look of vfr but kawasaki also looks great you do get more power with Z1k but my cb650r was enough for the road maybe not lower down as much compared to twins but enough also I do like the sound of v4 engine, it seems like vfr get some bad rep, some comments too heavy, too slow etc and these comments confusing me. I want to have reasonably agile bike so I can have fun as well as able to pillion comfortably.

I have been commuting on this bike for 2 months now. When people ask me what VFRs are, I just say it's right in between CBR and Goldwing but leans towards CBR and they usually get it. People say they thought it was a ducati and I take that as a compliment! And the sound.. I put a delkevic slip on on it and it just sounds better than any bikes out there

Extremely easy to drive bike, I am the happy owner of one black vfr 2014, loooong trips, she sleeps outside near the ocean, and no trouble at all ! And with a new exhaust it's another one! Few things it lacks (2014 version): - 200cc & 40 horse power - Usb port - Indication of remaining km according to petrol on the board Classy and sophisticated, sober and ... you don't see many of them on the road !! ^

Great review Mr Fish! Your enthusiasm for bikes is infectious. Been on adventure bikes for awhile and really like the look of the 2014 VRF. But was concerned with my size which is coincidentally similar to yourself 105kg 6’2 and you seemed happy on it on and not to contorted, power is the other concern. But feck it get it bought ridden and enjoyed. 👍

hard to say only done about 200 miles. do find the new one better about town more smooth on the throttle. i put the delkevic from the old bike on the new. to see if i was happy with the sound before i buy one. & new one on the old bike that is odd you get the sound of a new vfr but better as your on 4 valves all the time + the gear driven cams :) a long weekend on this weekend so time to test the new bike ;)

Werkes USA makes a slip on exhaust for the VFR 800/Interceptor. It's a lot shorter and lighter than factory can, and looks so cool but...... it has such an improved rumble at low speeds but when the Vtec kicks in OMG what a howl !!

I like the fact that this bike is described as agile. I was surprised by that as an old cbf600 I had didn't handle that well. There is one (maybe this one) for sale at Doblemotorcycles right now. April 2023. Tempted to have a look but a black one would steal my wallet.

To the people stating "VTEC is just valve timing variances STOP"! It is way more than that it actuates 4 valves above certain RPM, just 2 valves below. I'm inserting quote from Wikipedia here will give link if anyone needs just want to credit the original site for KZfaq satisfaction purposes. "Wikipedia Quote" [ Based on the VTEC-E system, the simplified motorcycle version of VTEC employs only two of the four valves per cylinder when operating at lower engine speeds. All four valves per cylinder are engaged above approximately 6,800 rpm. This is initiated by an electronically actuated oil spool valve, which send oil pressure to the lifter actuators, which then move the engagement pins into place above the valve stem, allowing the remaining two valves to open. This design allows for variable valve timing as well, since the cam lobe profiles can be made different. After much criticism of the abruptness of power transition, Honda lowered the VTEC activation rpm threshold to 6,400 rpm in 2006. The VTEC disengages two cylinder valves when the engine speed drops again below 6,100 rpm.] As you can now see it is way more complicated than simple variable valve timing. Plus the amazing thing Honda have never had a breakdown of this technology as far as I can tell. Know for fact when I owned VFR that was their boast....cool eh!

The mirrors do fold back. just need to be a bit more forceful they give a positive clunk when they are back in the correct position. I have 2015. at 6'4" I went for raisers this is my do it all bike all day comfort and commuting all wethers. love my VFR mines black one as the price was rite. I have aftermarket can as it came with the bike but switched it back (TOO LOUD) as set off at 0500hrs no one complained just felt bad, sounds awesome on overrun with aftermarket can. swapped my 94 vfr750 for this and don't regret it.

Sounds like the Crossrunner would be perfect for you then. Same everything, but with a pseudo-adventure costume and ergonomics to match. Rear seat cowl is a full replacement, so if you pick one up... bring a backpack The Mirrors WILL fold up, you just have to use a lot of force to do it. No accidental adjustment at motorway speeds VTEC is Honda's variable valve timing _and_ lift system. It differes from normal VVT in that it actually changes the camshaft profile and valve lift. What this basically means is that under 6k you're running on 1 intake valve per cylinder, which improves mileage, reduces engine wear, and helps beef up low-end torque, and above around 6-7k the other intake opens up, and it gets louder :) On the older RC46 VTEC, you had a notable power jump as you do in VTEC cars. On this one it was smoothed out as much as possible, but the low-end benefits remained. You did lose about 20 numbers up top, but going under 100hp just made insurance less expensive and didn't really slow it down much. Apart from the VFR800, it can also be found on the Japan-market CB400SF and the NC700 series, where it is just timing and purely for fuel economy

These new in 2022 were under £10k,an absolute bargain, given those engines go into 6fig mileages...sad to see them discontinued! You can get a bar conversion for ADV style bars, and the kit comes with mirror extensions! Cruise control is also available from McCruise, around the £500 mark,as is the Q/S you mentioned, the complete motorcycle, with a Grand thrown at it...prefer the silver too! Probably still a new one sitting in a showroom somewhere, in October '23...good long-term investment!

Good Video Mr Fish,im having a VFR vid watching day (must be the mild temperature outside lol) I'm a VFR750 owner,my only gripe is its quite a heavy machine,ok when riding but its a sod for moving around etc.Ive discounted buying a current VFR for the same reason but watching your video got me thinking. In a perfect world I like the looks of this one but would prefer the Engine of the 1st Gen one ( cam gear drive over VTEC anyday for me I think) but I'm also considering marrying the same said Engine to a Ducati Supersport S chassis, what a Tool that would be (shame Honda cant make an equivalent themselves) but hey-ho it is what it is,Happy Biking cant wait for spring.

For some reason, the Generation VIII VFR 800F (RC79 ) didn't go over that well, so it's easy to buy a leftover RC79 VFR 800F for close to dealer cost. Low-mileage trade-ins or demonstrators are even more affordable. All things considered, that's a _very_ good deal.
