Bill Champlin, vocalist and songwriter for Chicago, visited The Church Studio to perform a concert to a small group of 100 engaged superfans! On that visit, he also gave us an exclusive interview, where he discussed his early career memories with Peter Cetera, Danny Seraphine, David Foster, and others, concluding with some wise thoughts on how the love of music affects the recording process! We love his shout-outs to the great Leon Russell.
Bill Champlin is a multi-Grammy Award-winning singer, musician, arranger, producer, and songwriter who performed alongside Leon Russell in the 1970's and again in the 2000's. Bill formed the band Sons of Champlin in 1965, and was a member of Chicago from 1981-2009, where he performed lead vocals on two of Chicago’s biggest hits, “Look Away” and “I Don’t Wanna Live Without Your Love.” Bill co-wrote Earth, Wind & Fire’s “After The Love Has Gone” and “Turn Your Love Around,” made popular by George Benson.

Profound! Geez, I can listen to Bill Champlin talk forever. Man has worked it for money & at the same time picked his love of music & is one of the lucky ones to be comfortable. AND, as they say, timing is everything & BC did. That voice! Wow. Appreciate the real story of how David Foster resurrected Chicago. History always will back up that fact.

His best new song is “ Show Me” with Jason Scheff off “Livin…”, it reminds me of the Champlin/Scheff combos from the Chicago days.

Bill’s lyrics with the Sons were so spiritual and uplifting he is a true musical genius.His work with Foster was amazing great for both of them.I hope they work together again ( with Jay Graydon). He is like Boz from the perspective of true Soul.Bless him Tamara and Will. Peace

James Vincent was the first guitarist offered a full million dollar a year offer to join Chicago after Terry Kath passed. James was in a group called The Exceptions with Peter Cetera prior to Chicago and was signed to CBS/Caribou Records, owned by Jim Guercio who produced the Chicago records. Danny Seraphine had asked James to join the band, but he declined. There was heavy drug use in that band at that time and that was a major factor in his decision to pass. In 1986, James almost joined the band, but it didn't work out. That band with Bill Champlin and James in it would have been outstanding.

Peter said much the same thing…when Foster came in, the band was a mess of drinking and drugs, the songs they offered to Foster for consideration were junk, and Foster helped get the band back in shape again and modernized their sound. It ended up helping them strike gold for the second time and some of those 80s Chicago hits are now standards. If Foster and Champlin hadn’t come in, the band could have ended right then. Peter would have probably done well anyway.
