Take a look at our "new" Pratt and Whitney" rifling machine. We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to acquire this rifling machine and deep hole drill from the shop of Pat Vowell, an extraordinary gunsmith, machinist, blacksmith, wheelwright and teacher in the Bozeman, Montana area.

If you're not careful you will wind up with a museum of old gun manufacturing equipment. Nice find Mark, thanks for giving us the tour.

He was a one of a kind person and the kindest gentleman I ever had the good fortune to know. So glad to see them running again. Pat would be tickled to see somebody as excited about old machines as he was. Thanks for taking us along on the journey, once you are setup to do rebores I just might need to get a .308 barrel turned into a .35 and would love for his machines to do it. Thank you for all the help you have given his family.

(Mike C.) Good to see y'all expanding into rebore/re-rifling! I had an old .43 Spanish Remington military rolling block bored out, re-rifled and chambered for 50-70 govt. so I could shoot it. I was surprised there were so few folks out there doing that work these days. It really took some doing to find someone! One fella (Prescott Az.) told me he wasn't taking anymore work as he was two years behind. The demand is there so you should get some business with those machines!

Gun drills like that are, or were, used a lot in commercial aerospace for precision deep hole drilling, typically in aluminum. The difference being larger (.5 inch or more) and shorter. In a commercial airplane a deep hole would be 4 - 6 inches. Such large deep holes were usually done later in the manufacturing process when the aircraft was close to final assembly. Thus they were used in a portable positive feed drill setup that would be mounted to the aircraft structure via tooling. Think of that converted lathe in the video but without the bed, legs, pulley system and separate motor. It was totally self-contained (with a separate lube/coolant system) and pneumatic powered. Gun drills were used for the same reason as with gun barrels: they are a lot faster than twist drills and generally do not require a secondary ream.

I used to work with Pratt and Whitney barrel drilling machines ,there was also a Colt machine and a reaming machine ,also drilled race car axles which increased the tensile strength by 4 times ,lapping barrels by hand wasnt the fun part

That is a huge step forward, especially the deep hole drill borer, the only thing I do not understand is the indexing of 6 increments? most rifling is of uneven number to avoid a groove (or land) being opposite another. Will this rifling machine cut gain twist rifling ? Chris B.

Question what is the fastest twist rate you would use on a 44cal bullet in a rifle for a 300 grain bullet as max weight and 200 grain as minimum weight barrel length of 20 - 24 inches with a projected velocity of 2600 fps ?
