Yunchan Lim launched onto the international music stage when he was 14. He won second prize and the Chopin Special Award in his first-ever competition, the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists in 2018. That same year, he stood out as the youngest participant in the Cooper International Competition, where he won the third prize and the audience prize, which provided the opportunity for him to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra. 2019 meant more accolades, when, at the age of 15, he was the youngest to win Korea’s IsangYun International Competition, where he also took home two special prizes.
Now just 18, he has performed across South Korea-including with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others-as well as in Madrid, at the invitation of the Korea Cultural Center in Spain. He also participated in the recording of “2020 Young Musicians of Korea,” organized by the Korean Broadcasting System and released that November.
A native of Siheung, Yunchan currently studies at the Korea National University of Arts under Minsoo Sohn. Coming to Fort Worth, he says he is “looking forward to playing in front of the warmest and most passionate audience in the world.”

마지막 10분은 콩쿨이 아니라 콘서트였다 그리고 피날래 모두 환호를 부를때.. 나도 인정했다 이건 콩쿨이 아니라 연주회라는걸 이렇게 피아노랑 다른악기 소리가 다르고 아름답게 들린적은 처음인듯.

맞아요. 스승이볼때얼마나. 스승이 제자를 존경한다는게 쉽지않는데 정말 청중을 빠져들게만드는 피아니스트 타고난재능 노력 인성. 정말 다갖춘피아니스트는 거의 없는거같아요. 세상에서 제일 피아노를 사랑하는게 느껴질정도네요 ㅜㅜ 눈물이나요 음악이너무따뜻하고 아름답고. 정말 너무 행복해요 ❤️

I am 79 and retired from a 55 year very busy studio singing career. I was raised in a very talented musical family, my mother was a concert pianist at 16 and my father had a legendary studio singing career. So music is my DNA and my soul. 어제 jtbc윤찬님 프로 보고 아침부터 달려와 또 듣습니다. 윤찬님은 2004년생이지만 1969년에 태어난 저보다 더 어른같은 내면의 깊이가 느껴지는 훌륭한 인격체라는것을 다시 한번 느끼게 해준 프로였네요. 120살쯤 되어야 할 수있는 깊이있는 인터뷰 답에 정말 놀랐습니다. 좋은연주를 위해 한음 한음 최선을 다해 본인만의 음악세계를 펼쳐나가는 윤찬님의 앞날을 위해 항상 기도하겠습니다

Yes, every time feels like the first time. I wish this video clip went a little longer and included all parts of his curtain calls, ovation, and reactions of Buddy Bray and Liz Roe, hugs with Marin Alsop, backstage mom reactions, and where orchestra members walk up to him right after to congratulate him. Those are priceless and authentic moments.

I watched the competition live on TV, all pianists. Even before this performance, Mr Lim’s work made everyone else’s fade into the background. But then came the Rach 3 and I was mesmerised. I’ve been a pianist for 60 years, following so many different artists and attending so many concerts around the world. I’ve never heard anything as perfect and emotionally draining as this performance. Even now, after dozens of viewings, I’m still brought to tears. He’s a wonder. I am waiting eagerly for his first CD from Decca.

@@ddestiny44 "The entire piano world is about to collectively lose their mind." Ben Laude said it all with this opening statement in his analysis video. The listeners who are not in “competition” with Yunchan were simply in awe, ecstatic, and marveled at Yunchan’s prodigious musicality. But the professionals, notably those who recorded Rach 3 or their live performances posted on KZfaq, would be so embarrassed at theirs compared with Yunchan : They know how lousy their plays were and they cannot compete with Yunchan-no matter how hard they try-in million years. Yunchan is simply on another level that they cannot reach. The Rach 3 at Van Cliburn competition was an announcement to the world that the greatest living pianist was just born. Ben Laude and two guests (Van Cliburn jurors) confirmed it with their own words although they didn’t spell it out specifically-they needed to be diplomatic on that kind of statement.

Heard him last night with New York Phil. He played it totally different!!!!! It was so electrifying. The audience was in awe. I was laughing when it ended because I couldn’t make sense of what I had just seen and heard!!!

Must have been amazing to hear him in person. I’ve heard this piece dozens of times, and Rachmaninoff is my favorite composer. I’ve never heard a pianist, ever, who captured the heart of Rachmaninoff’s harmonic language with such precision and passion. His interpretation is everything I love about the composer distilled into a single, masterful performance. I am also in awe. There is nothing one can do but laugh in amazement.

The only performances comparable to this (or equal to this) are Bronfman, Argerich, Volodos and Kern. Maybe Sunwoo’s and Horowitz’s also come close.

@@staffanolofsson8201It's been just over a month since this video was uploaded and it has generated nearly six million views, far exceeding that of Horowitz, which had hitherto the highest number of views. Anne-Marie McDermott, one of the jurors of VC Competition this year says "I have played Rachmaninov 3rd. Never again. It now belongs to Yunchan". Cliburn webcast co-host and pianist Elizabeth Joy Roe called it a once-in-a-lifetime performance that left her nearly speechless. Many people who love this piece say this is one of the best renditions of this music. Time is not the only factor that determines whether or not a performance is historical. The greatness of the performance itself determines it. It's only my opinion. Thanks for your reply anyway.

각 악장마다 빌드업하는 부분이 나오는데 이건 정말 대체 불가다. 국뽕인 건가 싶어서 여러 피아니스트들의 연주를 들어봤는데 난 섬세하면서도 심장이 쫄깃할만큼의 다이나믹한 연주가 취향인 거고 임윤찬 연주가 딱 그렇다. 그래서 임윤찬 연주가 너무 좋고 더구나 이 피아니스트는 나보다 훨씬 어려서 그의 연주를 앞으로도 오래 오래 들을 수 있다고 생각하니 정말 행복하다.

어제 버스를 탔는데 앞쪽에서 이 연주가 흘러나오더라고요 다들 폰을 들고 있어서 누굴까 신기하기도 하고 저도 조용히 들리는 그 소리에 집중했답니다 궁금하던차에 내린다고 서있으면서 보니 버스 기사분께서 폰으로 작게 틀어놓고 운전하시더라고요ㅋㅋㅋ 몇 년전 미국 서부 여행중 요세미티 국립공원 들어가는데 어찌나 밀리던지요 그런데도 운전하면서 하나도 지루하지 않은건 너무나 멋진 풍경 덕분이였는데 윤찬군 음악이 그런 것 같아요 40분 한 시간이 들을 때마다 마음에 주는 선물과도 같습니다

well in order for me to go up the treadmill I positioned the tv screen in front and watched this video while running at 4 speed. Watching it thrice and don't get tired! Life is wonderful with Yunchan music.

I had the privilege of seeing and hearing Yunchan Lim last weekend. The program was Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Liszt. There are no words. I am in my 60s and I have never seen or heard anyone play like this before. He makes the music seem absolutely effortless, and he has a perfect balance of technique and expression unusual for someone so young. I would love to hear him play some 20th century composers!

폭발적이면서도 섬세한 연주가 임윤찬의 라피협 3번의 가장 큰 특징인 것 같아요. 과감하게 치면서도 음이 하나도 뭉개지지 않고 다 들리는게 대단하네요. 오리지널 카덴차가 흔하지 않아서 애지중지하며 듣는데 몇달째 들어도 들으면 들을수록 경이롭고 감동적이고 임윤찬만의 곡해석도 느껴져서 개인적으로 정말 사랑하는 연주.. 손 관리 잘 하셔서 오래오래 연주해주세요. 진심으로 응원합니다🙊

4개월을 들으니 처음 클래식 애호가들이 하신 말씀이 이해가 됩니다. "라흐3의 새 방향을 제시했다"란 어떤 분의 말씀이 특히 기억에 남는데요. 이제 알겠습니다. 같은 교과서를 배워도 밑줄긋는 방식, 중요 키워드 뽑는 방식이다 다른데 나중엔 뭐가 정말 중요한지 모르게 되거든요. 그런 연주들에 윤찬 피아니스트가 형광펜을 좍 그어 주었습니다. 테크닉에 영혼이 담겨있고 몸짓엔 진심이 담겨 있어요. 너무 고맙습니다. 클래식을 사랑하게 해 주어서.

얼마전 이혁이 우승한 롱티보콩쿠르 final에서, 중국 피아니스트가 연주한 라흐3번 연주가 임윤찬 연주와 매우 비슷했어요. 감정선이 살지않아 맥없는 연주가 되었지만~ 아마 이제 라흐3 연주하는 사람은 윤찬의 연주를 참고할듯!

저는 클래식을 잘 모르는 애기 엄마예요. 아이를 아침 일찍 깨우기 위해 클래식을 틀어 놓다가 우연히 유튜브 알고리즘으로 임윤찬님 알게 됐어요. 저는 클래식 연주 공연을 단번에 집중해서 감상한 적이 한번도 없었는데... 자기 전에 이 영상을 클릭했다가 50분을 내리 공연에 집중했어요. 마지막엔 마음이 너무 벅차올라서 눈물까지 흘렸네요. 드라마나 영화가 아닌데 제가 이렇게 음악에 50분을 집중 할 수 있다는게 한편으론 신기해요. 그 후로 이 공연을 보기 위해 매일같이 클릭을 한답니다. 임윤찬님에게 천진난만하고 순수하지만 강한 에너지가 느껴져요. 삶의 활력이예요. 진심으로 좋은 공연 감사합니다💖🥹

저랑 똑같은 경험을 하셨네요. 드라마도 아닌데 50분 동안 웃었다가 소름 돋았다가 눈물 흘리기를 반복하며 빠져 봤습니다. 음악을 들었는데 멋진 영화 한 편을 본 것 같았어요. 대사도 가사도 없는 음악을 듣고 많은 사람들이 음악에 대한 순수함과 감동을 느낀다는게 신기해요

I have listened to this recording many times now. There are hundreds of comments available about the work Yunchan does, as well as interviews, newspaper reviews and listener comments about this and the subsequent versions he has made of it with other conductors. Comments about his relative youth, and his seemingly freakish ability are easy to find. In one interview he really supplies his own explanation for his work, claiming that all the answers lie in the music. And he is so right. Of course he has enormous technical skills as well as an incredible capacity for very hard work. I fancy his IQ , including its literary, emotional and musical components, is extraordinary, BUT HE ALSO EMPLOYS IT TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL as he approaches any musical composition. He reveres the composers themselves and also delves into their histories. So Yunchan doesn't need to be old, have huge life experience, be entranced or possessed in order to perform as well as he does. This also explains what he means by' improvisation' as he plays-he doesn't rest on his laurels between performances but rereads and reinterprets the composers' intentions as new insights are revealed from the music. Occasionally he embellishes scores slightly, very fittingly, where he feels it will enhance the work-make it clearer. It is therefore the composers' knowledge, insights, life-experiences, moods, and intentions he reads from their works and uses his wonderful talents to present them to us as clearly as he is able. They are the old souls, but Yunchan has it within his DNA and young life experience to make it his business to know and honour them. Thank you universe.
