I can not stress how much my watercolor experiences got so much BETTER after I upgraded my paints and stopped using pulp papers (So much cheaper) I recently expanded my palettes to multiple brands in one palette! Denise Soden(In Liquid Color) is a wonderful person to watch if your interested in expanding your watercolor experiences. She is a phenomenal wildlife painter and she has expanded even my knowledge about pigments and color theory too! I have always known more than is good for me but also knowing no body knows it ALL! I am willing to learn and that is the best attitude an Artist can have if they want to improve and grow. Just my 2¢.

I think awful paper is so much more detrimental than decent student paints. Most of the time you can get very similar results with cotman as long as you aren't using trash papers. There is of course a difference between student grade paints between brands though. Some brands (especially with cakes) are just awful. I've used cotman tubes and tbh there's not much difference between those and the professional tubes. The pans always looked too chalky to me in nearly any brand though if it's extruded. I make my own paints right now but I used WN professional and cotman for years.

Great video. 😀 I love my Corman set, and as colors have run out, I have replaced them with the Professional range. And my thoughts is that yes the professionals are easier to work with. But if you don't know how the lower grades works and feels, you probably won't appreciate the Professional as much. And you learn more by finding solutions, to achieve what you want, with the student grades. And makes you a better painter. Then if you get paint that "does it themselves", if you get what I'm trying to say. So I say start with the student grades, and then move up. That way you get to appreciate it more 😀

I have some Cotman and have been adding professional colours to my palette. I originally chose only single pigment paints even from the Cotman range. I have a mix of Sennelier, Schminke, MaimeriBlu and W n N professional paints. I am just using up my Cotmans for practice purposes only now. Once you start painting with professional paints you really start noticing differences; colour mixes, fluidity, transitions, wetting ability, smoothness. It's all very different. Even in the heat here in Australia professional watercolours don't bloom (cauliflower) as quickly as Cotmans do. I am still only a beginner but I definitely won't be buying student paints ever again.

We are so lucky to live in this age of abundance. Even 100 years ago their was not to much variety. I've always been the frugal painter it's a challenge to find supplies . I thought myself happy to have the small cotman set. I have some of the professional series as well . And a mish mash of other colours in professional series . Personally I like them all. And find them a joy to work with. I have been doing more colour work discovering some satisfying mixes. As well as cool to cool and warm to warm mixing. I was blaming my colours when I was just choosing the wrong mixing choices

I have to say that the pro line looks a lot richer and more saturated but that's not always a good thing. Sometimes you want that soft dreamy watercolor look. Which I guess means that you use a lot less paint with the Pro line as a little bit goes a long way. I think that the flower half with the pro line looked better. The colors seemed to flow together really well. But I think in the end both are beautiful paints. I think if you didn't have the pro palette for direct comparisons you would really know any better. Cotman series looks almost the same.

When I first started painting Cotman was the only student grade paint I could find, and it came highly recommended by most professionals for beginning artists. I nearly quit watercolor altogether because I was struggling to get vibrant colors and I couldn’t make glazing work at all. Then a friend recommended I try some professional paints and they made a big difference! I don’t particularly care for Winsor and Newton’s earth tones in either range; in fact, I really thought I disliked earth tones until I tried some by other brands. This was a good look at both ranges and I’m so glad you included the painting footage because that’s really where you see the differences, in my opinion!

I’ve got both the cotman and the professional paints. I started off with a £2 set of watercolours from the works just to see if I liked watercolours, then was gifted some money & invested in the same big cotman set you’ve got & I LOVED them. As I’ve gone on, I’ve started to sell my paintings so got myself some professional watercolours. I still will use my cotman paints & carry a travel set of them in my sketching bag I take out with me. For me, when I go back to the cotman paints straight after using the professional ones I get frustrated with how much more I’ve got to work the paint in the pan to get the same intensity of pigment colour. I think when I’ve used up my cotman travel set I’d top it up with the pro tubes as I go along.

The Colour Cave studio of m m here on KZfaq recently put together a custom watercolour palette & was using a mixture of cotman & a few other professional paints, they said that there are some colours in the cotman range that have high enough lightfast ratings that she would be happy to use them in a piece to sell. I think from the W&N pro range, you’d enjoy the olive green - it is much more earthy than say the sap green but it’s still bright and vibrant too.

This is a great comparison, we can really see the difference between the "cheap" line and the professional one. I can only recommend the professional one as it's easier to use (and when we start it's a big plus). And if we look for vivid colors we would have to use so much paint on the cotman (and other non professional brands) that in the end it would cost a lot. I bought my paint second-hand. That's not as pretty as a brand new case but that's way cheaper! Thanks Gem for this video it was really great :-)

I was very happy with my Cotman pallet at the time, but the more I painted, the more I could see the difference between my paintings and those of youtube artists I follow (at first it was very hard to see what was due to skill level and what was because of materials). I totally agree with your observations about lifting the paint from the pans, the huge drying shift that makes the colours weak and patchy, and how the paint somehow simultaneously dries too fast to do wet on wet yet too slow to do wet on dry. Also, it took an insane amount of work and stress to get the paint to reach any level of intensity at all. I went through that Cotman paint at an insane pace, and all it did was make my paintings look dull because the white of the paper couldn't shine through the paint anymore. And getting it to do anything watercoloury like dispersing and interacting with other colours on the page was disappointingly tough. When I bought professional grade paints (Rembrand), painting immediately became so much more relaxing, fun, and gratifying. It is just so much easier: the paint is so eagerly reactivated that I actually get paint in the pan instead of a slightly damp block. I can just dip my brush in it. Not the whole brush though, because I only need a tiny bit. The paint wants to do pretty things, so I can let it do its thing. And when I want to coax it or fix a mistake, I can. Anyway, thanks so much for the video. I hope you can get many people to discover the relaxing playful joy of watercolouring sooner than I did.

I'm impressed. First, you think of experimenting. I wouldn't have thought of doing that, but I am very early on in my watercolor paints. I do not have W&N paints and at the rate I'm going I never will! Second, the Calla Lily speaks volumes of the difference between the two sets of paints. It would be interesting to know whether or not you would've had as marked a difference painting the lily onto the Strathmore paper. It appeared as if the Cotman set had a better opportunity to make a statement on the actual watercolor paper. That being said, for those who wish to use watercolors on their coloring book pages, I would now decide on purchasing the professional set of paints just based on your test. Thank you Gem!

My first purchase of watercolour paints was this big Cotman 45 set. I was only using them for craft purposes at the time but I always felt I had to fight to get intense colours. Not to mention how fast you go through pans trying to get intense colour.Boggles my mind that so many people recommend them to beginners. the struggles you had are what a lot of people face. A lot of newbies would think they were no good a possibly give up. There are so many more affordable beginner and professional paints now that I'd recommend in a heartbeat over Cotman. Maybe I am just frustrated with how they worked for me but I barely touch mine anymore.

@@TheColourCave I have Van Gogh tubes and I really like them, not done too much testing with the pan set I got but the tubes are cheap as chips. I have all three Jane Davenport palettes, the third one Glitz Sea has too many greens for me lol. However the brights have enough colours to get someone started and the Neutrals adds a second primary set. Apparently Prima and Jane Davenport are the same as the Mungyo and made by the same company. I snagged the 36 set of Mijello Mission Gold Professional paints that come with a palette for around £40-45. Most colours are super highly pigmented though there are a couple that aren't and a couple of fugitive colours. I also want to try Shinhan which are cheaper but don't come with a palette. It's also hard to work out which of their lines are which lol. Mission Gold also sells a pure pigment set that sounds interesting though I think it's heavy on either blues or reds. I have those flip out palettes that were everywhere a little while ago. They have no lightfastness ratings or colour names. They would be good for someone who likes a lot of control as I feel you really need to move most of them around yourself. Most are non granulating too but again highly pigmented. 42 colours for around £10 now I think plus the smaller cocktail (more pastel) colours. I'm trying out Daiso watercolours next weekend but for around £1.50 for 12 tubes how good can they be lol. I have some Royal and Langnickel I think they are and they are pretty awful, dry chalky and if you put them in a palette they flake out really badly lol. I think they were my first tubes and they are worse than Cotman! I will double check in the morning to make sure that was the brand. Sorry for the soliloquy, I love playing with watercolours and talking about them lol. I just don't get the chance that often! Oh and there are many paints I want to try! Being in AUS I have to be careful though. I bought one tube of Maimeri Blu and it slid all around my palette because it's made with honey 😥 Makes me scared to try other honey based tubes!

I think to really compare the sets, they should have all the same colours, though there definitely is a difference in the earthy tones and I would expected that. However, this makes me wonder whether I should turn my Cotman set into a Professional one once the colours are used up. If the Professional have the same colours as the Cotman set, I'd probably consider it in the future. However, I'll still use up my Cotmans before that. I'm only a beginner anyway ;-) I do like that lily, though :) looks so pretty, even with the difference in colours. It's definitely noticable

I used Cotman years ago when I started watercolor. And Cotman is the brand I gift to young painters under 12. Because I think it is a decent set to get started. Though their tube paints I got some in my Sketchbox the color from the tube seemed pretty intense. So I wonder if there is a difference between the pans and tubes at all? I think I may have one or two tubes of the W&N professional caput mortum and helio turquoise because those colors are amazing in that brand. Now I have a little of everything. I love my Daniel Smith and M Graham. But also have a set of Schmincke and Sennelier watercolors. I have also recently picked up some paul ruben, kurtake, mijello, and some handmade paints from etsy to try to see difference and figure out the difference and have paints to play with because I love colors :D. I used to believe in brand loyalty but all brands have some single colors that end up more amazing than another brand or is more the color you want. SO its nice to see companies coming out with dot cards so you can try before you invest!

Very lovely comparison. Watching you swatch and paint was a delight. As for the difference between the Cotman and the professional range of W&N, I find it quite significant while layering. The Cotman range just doesn't yield those brillant and luminous transparent hues, and the colours tend to muddy more. Also W&N pans tend to be quite hard and require a lot of soaking and scrubbing to release the pigment. Have you tried out Schmincke Horadam (professional) and Schmincke Akademie (students' range)? I find them easier to use. :D

I do have several Van Gogh tubes, as I find they give off nearly the same amount of color payoff. My current palette consists of mostly m graham, mission gold, and Daniel smith paints, with a couple PWC and Van Gogh tossed in as well. I’ve recently gotten some winsor and newton professional tubes, so those may be put in the palette as well.

The Colour Cave Thank you, it originated with a joke about my mom’s old job and my tendency to be weirdly strong. But as for the palette, I found that using my cotman set helped me figure out which colors I like best. I gave it to my friend who liked cotman paints when I moved on to professional grade paints. As for trying paints, dot charts are the way to go, Daniel smith has them, and I think Schminke does too. It’d really let you get a feel for what colors you like, and I think the dots have enough paint to do at least a small piece of artwork.

I have noticed that most negative comments on Cotman paints seem to come from across the Pond..or Australia, where because of the weather much richer colours are needed es for landscapes than in the UK. Just a thought! I personally don't like the few Daniel Smith special colours I bought: did not granulate and zero response when I emailed to ask if I was doing anything wrong. I believe student grade paints with all the struggles and pale results discourage beginners and couse them not like the media and eventually quit. There are many exeptions but this is usually the case with many people who tried watercolor and not like it. It is best to use artist grade as much as you can afford it, even if it is only 3 primary colors.. This will teach beginners how to mix colors and the experience will be much more enjoyable and the results will be better....

You crack me up and your lovely accent is just the sprinkle on top. Dang it.. I had my heart set on the 45 pan cotman set and now I don't think I can do it after seeing the difference... but the WN professional are literally twice as much for half the number of pans... ugh. I guess I'm back to the drawing board to see if I can find something I can live with for both performance and price. The big issue for me is that where I live WN is literally the only decent quality paint I can buy locally without having to order online and deal with shipping which I hate, especially if I only need a pan or tube or two. I do really appreciate your great comparison, the difference is in the actual use and you did a great job with giving them both the same fair shake.

Such a kind comment, thank you! I still use my Cotmans all the time, and I still enjoy them as a medium. I’m gradually replacing them with the professional set. It would be well worth saving for a smaller set of the professional colours (after all, you can mix what you like!) if performance is a big deal to you. It’s easy to get a hold of a large, empty palette and just add a half pan or two every now and then, starting with the colours you use most.

@@TheColourCave I spend way too long online last night checking out some options.. I found an amazing deal on the Talens Van Gogh 24 set for $36 which gets much better reviews than the Cotman (I do also have a small Cotman set already), but I also found out I can order the blank Van Gogh palettes on Amazon . I'm in the US and it's harder to get your hands on the European brands.. there is a bit at one store and a bit at another, so I had like twenty windows open at the same time lol. I can't settle on which palette I want because none of them have all the colors I'm looking for, the smaller sets could be combined but tend to have a lot of duplicates, and for some reason there is a HUGE price jump in their large sets which is typically the opposite of other brands where the price per pan drops, perhaps because they switch to metal palettes at that level? I've already discovered I like to have a lot of convenience colors so I think Van Gogh might be as close as I can get to large number count and affordable price, I just can't bring myself to pay the high end brand prices for paint some of them are just insane. Van Gogh has a 48 pan but it's about $120, the 45 pan (actually only 40 colors as that is all they make the rest are duplicated) Cotman is around $60, the largest WN professional I can find is 24 and it's $110. At the same time I'm debating whether pans are even the best idea for me vs. buying some tubes for a larger well palette but I hate having to mix everything that goes on paper and while tubes are more cost effective they have a much higher initial price point. I've got some thinking to do.

Thanks you Gem, this has helped me a lot. I think I will save up to replace the Cotmans that I use up with its professional counterpart .

I have a large W&N cotman set & have also tried a few of the W&N pro paints in tubes that were to replace some of the cotmans I wasn't so happy with. Thanks to your video today my wallet is much lighter & a set of Pro W&N watercolours are winging there way to me (Amazon & W&N thank you!) Most of my problem with the cotmans was the mixing. Like you I'm new to watercolours but have found pro paints seem to work better. Other paints I love are White Nights & Senneller. I love these because they flow so beautifully. Also have you tried any of Khadi Papers? They are handmade 100% cotton rag & a great price. I'd like to see what you think of them...(*,*)...🎨💚 My fav colour is also green💚

Sigh!! I was reading your comments and decided to opt out of any opinions lol. But I love this comparison and have stored the info away when I decide to leap from pencil to paint. Just discovered blending solvents for pencils and loving them. I ordered Zest-it from Jackson's Art in London England (yes far cheaper than Amazon even with shipping), but did buy a small bottle of gamsol to tide me over while waiting for the post. Anyway, I love the blending and marriage of colors. Great video 🐇💎🐇

I do see the difference between the 2, the professional paints def have more pigment, which makes sense. but when it comes to watercolours I think I'm just cheap lol and am so us to using the Cotman that I prefer those lol (but when it comes to coloured pencils I prefer the expensive ones, give me Caran d’Ache Luminance pencils lol)

I know 3 professional watercolor artists who sell originals. All 3 use cotman. One used daniel smith when he was sponsored by Daniel smith. He even has two curated sets with Daniel smith but he still uses cotman. He sells all the free paint daniel smith gives him after he shows himself using it in public. I've been painting for over 50 years. I still use cotman but I like daler rowney better. I've obligated ever seen youtubers use anything but.

The WN professional paints go much further than Cotman so work out at better value. As you mentioned, the range of colours is so much larger in the professional range. The Cotman range now includes 8 metallic colours but you can't fit them in the Cotman 45 palette easily. WN make an irridescent medium that works with any colour of either series. Not quite the same as the specific Cotman irridescent colours in pans.

I started with cotman and never really made any progress with my painting. When I purchased my first set of Sennelier everything turned around for me. Since then I've also fell in love with Schmincke paints as well. I've tried most of the professional brands except Windsor and Newton. For me it's how the paints react to the paper, they aren't the same. Cotman paints were such a disappointment. For me anyway.

Are you sure the travel kit contains professional grade paints? I bought the same travel set in Japan and it only came with cotman paints. I've also seen it in the USA and Australia but only with cotman paints.

I bought it sealed directly from W & N, so yes. Even if it was a ‘dodgy’ set, the paint colour names would have matched those of the Cotman set. Winsor & Newton are a U.K. based company, so it may just be a case of price/import costs for the professional paints. I have seen the same casings with Cotmans in them too.

@@aartadventure Jackson's have the pro set on the Aus site, but it is vomit-inducingly expensive - I could buy the 24-pan set here in the UK for the same money 🤯 Here's the link if you'd like to check it out all the same... www.jacksonsart.com/en-au/winsor-newton-professional-watercolour-field-box-set-of-12-half-pans
