I’ve recently decided to work a bit at my local bookshop in order to diversify my work and bring some balance back to my life. Recently, I’ve spent much of my time working from home, especially since lockdown last year, and it was time for a change. While I only work a little there each week, I hope to do so more in the future! None of this video is, or ever will be, sponsored content. Relevant links that help me out are linked below. Thank you for all your kindness and support of my videos.
📚Do you love audiobooks? If so, I would love to refer you (as a former bookseller) to an alternative to Audible that supports small local bookshops and communities! Learn more here: libro.fm/referral?rf_code=lfm...
❤️No obligation whatsoever, but if you would like to donate to support this channel. $8 will get a thank you postcard (my own art) from me in the mail (please note: you must include address in your note so I can send it!). It is much appreciated: www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_...
(Now and then a postcard has been returned to me or lost in the mail. If you have not received a postcard e-mail me at endymionmerrill@gmail.com! I send them out once a month, so definitely don’t be too worried if it has been a couple weeks but do contact me if you have any concerns. )
Thank you!

Hello Paola, I laughed out loud when you talked about the challenge of working in a bookshop. I had a job doing that in our tiny country town when I had my first child, 23 years ago. The owner wanted Saturdays off and I was her best customer so I got offered a job. Yes, you guessed it. I basically spent my small wages on books, and then some. One thing occurred when I worked there. A local woman walked in and browsed for a while and then said to me "Why would anyone pay $12 for a children's book?" Oh, my heart broke right there and I realised why I had trouble fitting in to the local Mum's Group. They didn't value books, reading and the need to read to their children. I wanted to share with you that since raising my toddler granddaughter, I have decided to go back to uni. Next year I start a Masters of Education in Teacher Librarianship, as my passion for literature and for literacy in children has not diminished. Your bookstore was swoon worthy. Hugs from country Australia.

This talk about children's books hit me in a way I didn't expect. It actually brought tears to my eyes. The world right now is so dark & you are like a light giving us permission to dig out children's literature that is filled with hope. I feel inspired after listening to you to get some of these titles for myself and to share as read aloud for my kids. Thank you. I appreciate your videos so much.❤️

I've daydreamed about working in a bookshop. :) Instead, as a homemaker and homeschool mama, I'm amassing our own home library, with plans for future floor-to-ceiling bookcases. And yes, while I buy countless children's books for my little ones, I secretly know they're just as much for me. ;)

"We have intrinsic value". I felt that. I often feel so useless, as if I'm just drifting and existing. Hearing you say that I have value, brings me immense comfort.

What an extremely lovely video. I sat here with pen in hand writing down the books you recommended. My heart began to race with anticipation. I didn’t want to miss the name, Title, or Author. At almost 66 years old, my mind and imagination take me right back to my early childhood, learning to read and spending countless hours sitting at a small table in our public library (which we lived very close to). My neighbor was librarian so my parents felt I was safe to spend hour after hour there and when I’d been gone past time to check in, they knew exactly where I’d be. 😊. I learned so many valuable lessons by my love for reading, made friends with so many trusted animals and friends, and could travel anywhere through the opportunity afforded to me through books. ❤️. My book shelves are loaded with books that I still love to read over and again. Thank you again for your delightful presence in this world. God bless you sweet friend! Keep reading and please keep sharing. 😊❤️😊

As a librarian so much of what you said resonated. I too find so much beauty and hope in children's books especially picture books. You are a beautiful story teller and I can definitely see you as a children's librarian if that is something you wish to pursue.

This video couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m in Michigan and with the recent school shooting events, I needed something to ease the pain. As a Literature major, I’m always looking to expand my book list. And I love Neil’s books ❤️

I'm so very jealous of being able to work in a book store! I would absolutely love to be able to do that. Even as just a part-time job for minimum wage. Sadly, such stores hardly even exist anymore. Enjoy and appreciate the opportunity.

OH GOODNESS as a librarian, this warms my heart! Also, save those pennies, we get paid nothing. Just borrow all the books you want and buy the books you need. You know this <3 Keep telling people to read! I love that so much. Happy holidays to you and yours.

You're definitely living the life I idealize everyday before sleeping. I mean, living in a cottage, work with art and books, away of all the drama and stress of the city?

This video reminded me of a quote by C.S. Lewis... "When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

I used to work in a bookstore when I was in high school. I also volunteered at the library in middle school. I loved both. I plan to do it again as I get closer to “retirement” as I loved it so.

Last year I opened a small secondhand bookshop. It went well but I need to prioritise my college so I abandon it. I plan to open it up again this year, and watching this video makes me sure maybe this is the best step <3

This is by far the most beautiful video I have seen in a while. You are living the dream. Small town living and working in a small bookshop, I love it. As a young writer and historian, this is one of my future goals.

Definitely not too rambley. I love it when you take the time to chat about what you'd learned, your experiences, and of course, book recommendations. Thank you for gracing us with your presence each week. <3

I'm so glad you could find a job that suits you so well. I used to work as a bookseller, about 10 years ago, in a small bookshop filled with wooden shelves and tea boxes, and enjoyed it so much. I wish you the best there ❤

Hi Paola, in my thirties, I worked at a bookstore called Yesterday’s Books, featuring out of print and used books. It was a wonderful job. Your shop is warm and lovely, enjoy it!
