I'm getting ready to build one of these for my niece, she's going to a senior in High School back home in Missouri this year and she's coming down here to Texas go to Sam Houston State for college. The only diffrence is her walls are going to be wood floor overlaying, mainly because I got a really good deal on it, a buddy and his wife bought a pallet of it for a home project and only used a little over half the pallet so I just bought the rest from them on the cheap, and we'll just paint it.

I bought a 40' HC one-trip. The extra one foot of head room is awesome. The paint they use on the exterior will dissolve with goo gone or similar solvents, which I found out when attempting to remove painter's tape residue. Point being is I don't think it's the most durable paint, so damaging the paint with the heat gun when removing stickers is understandable. Another approach to removing stickers might be to try a pressure washer. I have mine situated on the corner of my workshop property in my small rural town. I welded 1-5/8" top-rail horizontally on stand-offs onto the side of the container for roller tracks for a 20' long x 6' tall rolling gate that goes across the driveway. I love the versatility of these boxes.

A sand blaster is what you need for those stubborn stickers. Great video. Thanks.

Id keep those metal pieces you cut out and use them as window security shutters you can close when you're not using it and put a lock on the metal door you can't use bolt cutters on so you don't come back after a few months to a ransacked cabin. Also putting your mattress on a hinged board on that frame would give you extra space for storage. Drawers would also be nice but more complicated and they need room to pull out.

I have thought about doing widow covers with cut outs in my tiny house, but have never had a reason to do it. I did cut a 8 inch circle in one window cutout to use for a peek hole. My drawers are four nesting filing boxes that can be seating or stacked four high. I built a couch that is a few inches shorter than the width so it can fit on the end or a side. The couch can open up to a full size bed. My entry is a sliding patio door at the end under the sliding porch roof to regulate seasonal light. When the two end doors are closed the place is pretty secure. standing at the entry there are now windows on the right side and two six foot long clearstory windows on the left side. The light is amazing. The quickest way to break into a tiny house is not with bold cutters. It only takes a 20 volt side grinder and about ten minutes to cut through the side wall get inside.

Unless codebeating requires a 20-footer the 40' High Cubes have MUCH more usable interior height and space. For example I'm 6'2" and can walk beneath my shelves (which hang from the interior roof tiedown loops designed to take thousands of lbs). I have four HCs (two joined as machine/welding shop space and two separate with doors on both ends. All have power and light. For those who don't have extra space on their home service adding a power pole with an outdoor service panel and outdoor 240v and 120v outlets before you build gets all the site power you'll need so I did. Either way the best grade to use is a "one trip" (effectively new) grade container rather than the storage grade (means condemned for maritime freight use) containers which frequently have annoying damage and corrosion (Corten does corrode). I found out the rubber roof coating popular for mobile homes forms a water-retaining "scab" over the roof promoting corrosion and had absolutely NO fun grinding it off with a cupped knotted wheel wire brush on my 9" angle grinder. I then used industrial roof coating (nothing from chain stores) to recoat. Had I used one-trip containers (this was on two 40-footers welded together side-by-side) I would have suffered much less. Anyone wanting to recoat can rent a mobile air compressor and sand blaster if they don't have similar.

If you want permanent lights, build a small 12v solar set up and a E26 12v light bulb 💡 that screws into any standard light bulb socket, you can use any standard AC switch with this set up, the simple 12v solar set up will power a 12v TV also if that's all you need, the 12v set up will also run a 12v pump as well if you want to run your rain water on tap. I have videos on building 12v pumps that work great with float valve applications, I also have some videos on solar as well, you can protect your cabin by having lights go on at different times with a 12v neotech timer, I have a video on how to set up if interested.

Should have used clean metal for the rain water collection and wood that won't leach toxic chemicals into the water.
@stateofnatchez22 күн бұрын
It doesn’t matter if this thing was lightly used or literally never used. You will never ever remove all of the toxic chemicals out of the wood or the paint that was originally designed to keep these things in shape over long extended periods of infestation of bugs, rodents, or just general Saltwater or chemical exposure. If you don’t believe me, look it up into exactly how these things are painted and how the floors are treated.
