I have enjoyed making many(!) of these! I would love to see a tutorial from YOU for making simple cotton or whatever material grocery bags. Like, not fancy totes, but instead ones that are shaped and look more like what the plastic bags stores use. I have seen some that have a pocket that it folds into.....but I have not found a tutorial with measurements, and descriptions as good as what you do!

Sorry, no extra sizes, I just made whatever I could out of my piece of oilcloth. As a guide though, if you decide on the finished size of your bag, say 15cm square, you'll need a piece of oilcloth at least 17cm wide by 36cm to give you a decent seam allowance and fold over flap, c x

I was wondering, if at step 3:23...you turned over the fabric and had the flowers on the inside and polka dots on the outside, then sewed the sides....wouldn't you eliminate a step? After that, you could turn inside out, and then the flowers would be on the outside, with a finished side seam. Or, am I not looking/understanding it correctly? Does it make a difference doing it that way, versus the other way?
@TheCraftsChannel
@TheCraftsChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I see what you mean but you'd end up with a raw seam on the inside of the bag and you'd be forever getting bits of thread in your sandwiches! I've done it this way so it's a French seam that encloses all the raw edges., c x
@pattykralicek1191
@pattykralicek1191 4 жыл бұрын
You are so right! I am new to sewing, and then after I figured it all out, it completely made sense! Of course I had to work on my French seam a little bit, but now they look wonderful! I know many people use Ripstop, or laminated cotton, or oil cloth, and even make beeswax whatever-it-is fabric. Of course with myself I do not worry about it, but to give as gifts or to sell, it seems there is nothing that makes all people happy about the food safety, hahahaha, so I guess these will be made just for me :) THANK YOU SOOOOO much for your reply, and for your tutorials.
@TheCraftsChannel

Yes, I try to steer away from suggesting these are made commercially because food safety guidelines differ from country to country. You do wonder whether modern, urban environments are more dangerous than a bit of coated fabric though.... c x

What kind of needle do I need to sew the oilcloth? does it need a different presser foot or the presser foot oiled to slide through?

You could if you put the coated side on the inside to prevent sandwich filling soaking into the fabric, but you'd have the wrong side of the fabric on the outside, c x

Sorry Liz, we try and make the projects so that you can just use whatever you have. This one only uses rectangle of 100% cotton and flexible oilcloth but you could use jersey, polycotton, waxed cotton, ripstop, an old polyethylene sandwich bag... whatever you have to hand, c x

Where do you get oilcloth? Would PUL fabric work?
@learntocrochet1
@learntocrochet1 5 жыл бұрын
I have used PUL...it definitely works, though it is slippery to work with. I have used iron on vinyl, but it is not very environmentally friendly. Waiting now for my order of Odicoat brush on fabric sealer. As far as I can tell from the research I did, it is the most environmentally kind waterproofing method...except maybe beeswax.

My oilcloth is from Norfolk Textiles - norfolktextiles.co.uk/saki-extra-wide-acrylic-oilcloth-in-turquoise-116223-p.asp If all else fails try sewing a heavyweight freezer bag as the lining, c x

If using PUL do you sew three layers of fabric? For aesthetic purposes? I have yellow and white PULs but wonder if it would look nicer if the patterned fabric was the only fabric showing.
