As a Florida native, this is great to see! I have given up on driving on the interstates and highways as much as possible. When I drive from Tampa area back to my hometown of Melbourne, driving through the middle of the state on small back roads takes me about 15 minutes longer than 75 to I-4 to 95, but I arrive with my nerves, and my life, intact. Thanks for highlighting what I call the "the real Florida"!

The backroads are so nice and peaceful. And you never know what you’ll find around ever corner. Hidden gems of Americana.

I have the information on what you saw in Inverness, Dunnellon, Williston, Bo Diddly's grave.. and more. I live in this area. My family is from Cross City. We homesteaded there in the mid 1800. At the start of the civil war. Family name Grigs then Anderson now. The Roller Barn s still open. Shocker, but yes. The bowling alley Sportsman's Bowl. Is the original bowling alley for the county and is still open. Completely remodel and modern inside. The pink elephant, creepy, especially at night when the lights are on. Citrus county is mostly a retirement area as is Dunnellon, the round brick structures are ovens to make charcoal. The plant is still an operational charcoal plant. They don't use the ovens anymore.. Williston is know for it's peanut farms. Some of Ocala FL horse community has spilled into it. The high school has only been closed for three years and moved to new school. Bo Diddly's? Famous blues player. Yes he is from this area. Bronson/Archer. Chiefland, old out house bathroom. There was at on time an old church on that location which had an old out house. The church was removed, bit the out house remained because it was a block structure. Closed off for safety now. Also, (out house). Hazardous to be in. The storm damage was from Hurricane Michael last year. 2018. I hope this info helps you. Or maybe not. But I've called this area of Florida home since the 1970's and wanted to share. Thank you for the vlogs. One last thing. The road, HWY 41, is your North-South Route 66. Tampa to Chicago. Major thoroughfare prior to I-75.

12:30 I'm a bricklayer in the UK and we call those "Castle corners" But we do ours 3 bricks on top of each other for the height and 1 and a half wide stepping in to 1 full brick. Great video Adam, I love seeing the old buildings and especially the brickwork over there. Cheers.

I used to live here before moving to Southern California recently. Small town Florida has a rustic, quaint charm. The damage was from Hurricane Michael btw. It practically wiped out Panama City and Mexico Beach. Category 5 hurricane.

"The storm" you mentioned that damaged all the trees was the Cat 5 Hurricane Michael 10/10/2018 that wiped everything off the map from Mexico Beach, FL toward Macon, GA. It was still a Cat 3 in Macon. Spread the word.... we still need help.

I went to that dam back in 1982 when I was around 9 years old with my parents to visit my aunts new husbands fishing cabin. I remember hearing the adults talking and they were saying that scuba divers that have to inspect that dam have reported giant catfish at and or around the base of the dam, with the water fall turned off of course. They also said that many divers did quit and refused to ever scuba dive near that dam. They said that the catfish were as big as a man and some were even bigger. I remember it was hot and I did want to go swimming but after hearing the adults tell their tell of giant fish I quickly changed my mind and just fished and stayed hot...God Bless you Adam and stay safe!

early 90's I saw Bo Diddley at a dive bar around Tallahassee. He lived not too far away. He played for about 1.5 hours with some local dudes and it was awesome!!

So many interesting little dead towns around the South. There were a couple buildings that I would restore into homes. Nice Vid. The Bo Diddley headstone looked so lonely. Imagine living in a town where the Highway hardly ever gets traveled any more. Would love to have seen the before and after of these towns. Americana old school at it's best.

All of those bent and broken trees (toward the end of your video) is from Hurricane Michael that hit Panama City and especially Mexico Beach in 2018. The destruction of the hurricane hit inland for many miles! Much of Mexico Beach is still a wasteland - waiting to be rebuilt! Another great video Mr Woo!!!!

I grew up in Gainesville, FL. Moved to PA 17 years ago after college. Man, did this video take me back! Love it. Makes me think of visiting my Grandpa in Interlachen. He'll be 89 in April, still lives in the same little trailer on his lake!

12:53 - My third great-grandmother Louisa Colding died at For Fanning March 19, 1865. 16:50 -- Perry, Fla. ... January, 1971 ... I was hitchhiking from Ft. Lauderdale to Tulsa, Oklahoma ... got a ride somewhere in Northern Florida from a couple black guys ... outside of Perry, we get pulled over ... the paperwork on their car was not in order and I was a long hair ... we had to proceed to the station ... a lot of "boy" from the cops ... the guys didn't have money for bail so I paid it ... $35, which is most of what I had then ... they said they lived just north of Tallahasse and they'd pay me back when we got there ... arrived well after dark ... they didn't have any money there either ... I'm back out on the road ... segregated Florida ... dark ... January cold ... get a ride back into Tallahassee from a guy who said he was going to be gone for the night but I could stay at his house ... must have been an angel ... walked 50 yards to the road in the morning, stuck my thumb out, caught a ride from a vet back from Vietnam ... lot of info about the May 1970 Cambodia invasion ... he was going all the way to Temple, Texas ... on his father-in-law's credit card ... stayed in nice hotels and ate well in New Orleans and Austin. My $35 good deed was repayed several times over. That's what I think about whenever I hear "Perry, Florida."

That "storm" you referred to was Hurricane Michael, the most recent and only a few of the Cat 5 hurricanes to ever make landfall on the US. I'm in Panama City and we are still recovering with many homes still uninhabitable and areas of complete devistation (since October 2018). Enjoying your Americana road trip. These trips are what got me hooked on the Woo to start with. Godspeed!

Wow! The Dam in your video is the Jackson Bluff Dam built in 1927 constructed on the Ochlockonee River to produce hydro power, waters held back by the dam formed Lake Talquin. Great catch! it’s been over 30 years since the last time I was there.

No idea how you popped up on my list, but glad you did. Just retired down here about 4 years ago in Florida. You were in my neck of the woods where you hiked up towards the dam by Tallahassee. We live in Crawfordville. Spent most of my life in Northern, Ca. working, now enjoying the quiet peaceful life until a hurricane comes in. Thanks for the road trip.

Thank you so much for that wonderful guided tour of ghost places. I loved every second. I'm in the UK and it's so difficult to find abandoned places. There are some great places in Wales. Ex mining town that are abandoned.

Having grown up in Orlando in 1959 visited many of these out of the way places loved seeing all brought back some great memories

I went to florida in the winter to a huge resort, all for free. I wandered right off the property through the tropical forest with iguanas looking at me. Birds making noises I have never heard. I found a good sized house overgrown, roof section caved in and learned it was the resort's original building .. before they were multi-millionaires in the early 60s realizing their property value. Quite a dream to ponder. Imagine realizing the humble people at the heart of your vacation.

OMG! I visited my cousin Becky Jo in Cross City 50 years ago. They lived next door to the funeral home in a house trailer...across from the city hall that you panned across. That concrete enclosure in front used to be a fountain and one night Becky and I dumped soap powders into it. We were just bored kids into a little mischief.

I actually live in one of those towns. It's so weird seeing my little town on KZfaq.

My wife and I started doing this about 15 years ago. At least once each year, we head out using no interstate highways and we seek out little towns and backroads to explore. We’ve covered a lot of back country America in the eastern US and have visited some really lovely places. It’s far more peaceful than traveling to a “destination” to squeeze in the all the “must see” places. The only challenge sometimes is finding a hotel because we’re picky about where we sleep. Because we don’t plan a route, we don’t know where we’ll be as night falls, so we’ve begun trying to get off the road each day by 3pm so we can enjoy whatever town we find ourselves in that particular day. The coastal areas of the Carolinas and Georgia are awesome for this. We’ve found amazing places to eat and visit in quaint little towns populated by wonderful folks. Maine is pretty fantastic too. The Adirondacks, Catskills, Finger Lakes and west through Ohio is an amazing trek - especially during the autumn harvest season. Just stay off the freeways and you’ll locate incredible finds by slowing down and really looking carefully.

I am from and live in the area featured at the end of the video. You are correct, a storm did come through. It was Hurricane Michael, a category 5 hurricane that destroyed almost everything, but the media did a terrible job of covering. It was the first category 5 to hit the US since 1992, in addition, it was the third-most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in the contiguous United States in terms of pressure, behind the 1935 Labor Day hurricane and Hurricane Camille in 1969. It was the first Category 5 hurricane on record to impact the Florida Panhandle, the fourth-strongest land-falling hurricane in the contiguous United States, in terms of wind speed, and was the most intense hurricane to strike the United States in the month of October on record.

I found this and wanted to share: Brick Buildings On US 41 Past Rainbow Springs / Dunnellon - Florida I got the description on what they are from another photo here on Flickr as to what they are: These are charcoal kilns. They were built by The Pioneer Charcoal Company in the 1950s to process the Blackjack Oak that grew abundantly around Romeo (the town where these are located - between Williston and Dunnellon). The raw dark wood from the trees were stacked inside the kilns and slow-cooked until it carbonized. It was then compressed and sold as briquettes or lump charcoal. The smoke from the kilns was so thick at times that it obscured the highway in front of the plant. They haven't been used since the 1960s when the plant was sold and a modern charcoal cleansing facility was built at the site.

This is the Woo I like! I think you could do a whole channel just based on the “empty and non-tourist” areas of Florida for years.
