Keep this in your mind when you finally get to the Nightwish tribute to Pink Floyd with this song. Being an old guy, I grew up with PF and even though I love this, NW honored the song and the band, but it still had that Nightwish vibe which made it their own. I actually teared up listening to the NW version. This would have been a great Double reaction. David Gilmour gave the NW tribute a thumbs up.

Deliberately melancholy. It was suppose to be Pink Floyd’s last song on their last album. Reflecting back to their high hopes as kids as what their future will be. An older band going back to their easier and prettier sounds. Gilmour wasn’t going to be aggressive on this album. It clearly resonated with Nightwish to make a tribute version.

Drummer/Percussionist here - You’re the first reactionista I’ve seen who’s noticed the whole thing with the bell and the seemingly unusual choice of how to strike it. Nice! I’ve been mulling this over since I first saw this vid years ago. It does appear he’s using a good old timpani mallet on the thing, and even seems to be catching its fragile wooden shaft on the edge of the bell. But if he is, it’s a miracle his mallet doesn’t split in half, barely thirty seconds into the tune. No part of a timpani mallet is built to strike any metallic object. The wood shafts are light, thin, and delicate. Even the felt beater and its inner core will self-destruct, shed cotton, and crumble if used on anything but the smooth pliant surface of a drumhead. That’s why we use yarn mallets, with rubber cores, on suspended cymbals, if we know what we’re doing. So we’re left to wonder if maybe what he’s doing is not quite what it appears. Maybe the mallet is some other kind of durable bell striker that just appears to be a timpani mallet? Who knows? He certainly seems to be thwacking it with all the force he needs, with no apparent fear of flying splinters. It’s a mystery, Chuck. 🤷🏼‍♂️

What a lovely performance! This is a song I can't listen to without feeling deeply, and tearing up. It's simultaneously as stark as it is warm. I will say the song uses more than 3 chords. Even excluding the verse parts that depart a little, just the chorus covers all the minor scale aside from the 2nd.

Best concert I ever attended in my life. The sound and lights mesmerize you from the start to the end of the show. David Gilmore and his wife Polly wrote and composed the song. Polly is/was the ghost lyricist of most of their music post Roger Waters. You should really check out the Nightwish version of this song. They keep true to the song but take it to the next level as they always do but the bar is raised on the energy of the music and vocals. I will bet that your score would be raised on this song.

I find 8.6 a good vote. I'm much more a Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall guy (for those every song MUST be a 10 🤣), it's obviously not my favourite, but it's a good one, maybe a little bit too mellow. For this reason I prefer the Nightwish cover, harder and in NW style, a really good cover (I hope Gilmour never read this comments, David you are always the best 🤪).

Late to this one...maybe you'll read it. Music by Gilmour (good catch), lyrics by Polly Samson (Mrs. Gilmour). What a perfect final track on their final real studio album (with the three main members, prior to Richard Wright's passing). So melancholy, yet gripping. Their actual last album - The Endless River - was almost entirely comprised of audio material written and recorded (but unused), for the Division Bell .... just one new song (the closing title track).

I think he's striking the bell in the way a clock tower mechanism does. It's a long time (decades) since I saw one working in person, but I recall it strikes 'high' on the sound bow/low on the waist, rather than like the clapper, that strikes on the sound bow alone. Very different sound.

I saw this played by Pink Floyd at the Division Bell concert in Montreal, and I enjoyed both it and the original recording of it immensely. This live version seems deeper/muddier in tone (from remastering?), and Davids voice is not as clean as I remember. He seemed kind of hoarse. I also do enjoy the sound of the real bell, slide guitar and Spanish guitar in the Pink Floyd version. I also do enjoy the more aggressive and emotional tribute version from Nightwish with Marco singing the lead. Unfortunately, Nightwish(Tuomas) did use a Keyboard patch for the Bell sound, and the slide guitar is replaced by some really good guitar work by Emppu that is a really good tribute to the original.

Every reaction to this song these days always gets comments about how nightwish’s version is better or worse. It’s just completely different styles, PF is a prog rock band with that in its day pioneered stage shows, and NW is a heavier metal band with its own style.

Off the subject, where do you go to buy your gear Dave? I went to Guitar Center over the weekend, 3 different ones actually (no pun intended but it's funny) and between the 3 stores there was 1. Yes ONE bass head between 3 stores and it was a micro head. Hooked up to a tiny little Markbass cabinet but that's it! And one of them had a used SWR Goliath 4x10 covered in dog or cat hair. No real amps whatsoever! I haven't been in one of these stores in years and wow. Nothing to get excited about. All the Mexican strats were 699 regardless of finish, pickups or number of frets and the American strats were their usual, over 1400. Such a waste of my time. I did enjoy playing the one Musicman 5 string that I saw, a real Ernie Ball one that was $2800 and I'm sorry, those used to be a THOUSAND dollar cheaper. What happened? Where's all the gear? I was prepared to drop some coin and I went home angry with nothing. And sweaty because it's always 85 degrees in those stores lol

@@JAYZIGGY5 When it comes to gear, I buy from everywhere. I'll buy new or used, as long as it's in good condition audition sounds good. I bought an Ampeg SVT Classic head and 6x10 cabinet off a guy on Craigslist. Went to his home, plugged in and tried it out. Sounded amazing. Apparently he bought it and after buying it he realized it was too big and too powerful for what he was doing. According to him, he only used it a total of 4 times. I got both for $1400.00. The head alone usually goes for around $1999.00, so I jumped on it. Only piece of advice I can give is never buy anything without actually trying it out for yourself.

Gilmour as a solo artist and sole frontman of the band just never worked for me. I don't hear any ideas or anything creatively challenging. The lyrics his wife wrote are just sappy new age non-sense. Waters on the other hand still makes decent music, and still is a very good lyricist. But then I imagine his work sung by Gilmour, and I can't help but think how much better it would sound.
