They shouldnt be naming it "African Culture" it can only be African culture when the experience is African and not inflienced by outside forces like Christianity, Muslim or catholic. Lets be honest how we view gender roles is influenced by our various faiths which are not African. In African culture there are no feminists as Africans we never oppressed woman infact in some villages in Africa you find girls walking breast out which is an clear indication we never told woman what to wear, what they can do. When i hear that guy speak of hierachy/authority it speaks of the economic opportunities afforded to woman mainly in West Africa, North and East Africa. To maintain that hierachy/authority they have to oppress those woman. Were woman are economically liberated they dont talk of hierachy or authority. We cannot talk authority or hierachy when man once bent the knee to the 'Queen'

I think you are being a bit misleading. Most traditional African societies, even pre-Christian/Muslim ones, have oppressed women as well. Now, oppression of women and patriarchy manifests in different ways in different societies, but it is still patriarchy.

I think they should have defined feminism cause this debate needed research (my thoughts). For me feminism is being recognised as a human being and being given the opportunity and support to be the best I can be at home. work, school, etc... that's just me.

I think this debate should have been based on Nigeria specifically and not Africa as a whole because what in the hell was that???

The Demouchets do a great job keeping neutral facial expressions through some of the hard conversations. That’s some good intellectual charity. My jaw dropped at some of the comments 😂.

The topic you guys are discussing is "womenism" and not feminism. Womenism has always been in the continent but feminism is definitely foreign. Women in African culture always had a voice, hence there is no history that tells a story of Africans revolting against men because they felt oppressed. Only in Europe, and it can only make sense because European Males went all over the world and oppressed people, even themselves. Guys, Africans civilised the Caucasians and not the other way around. Signing out 🇿🇦

In South Africa, we’ve had a portion of our people led (to this day) by Queens and the men fully respect and understand. And they have been in practice in centuries.

@@henrysekhula2152 thank you, someone with a Brain... folk's are trying to make it as if matriarchy was a thing in Africa when in reality it was never a thing....the only real matriarchy that was Cushitic kingdom (Sheba lineage) and in the southern part the one worth speaking of is Njinga from Angola but that was for her period only ......

@@issachaarwazulu1726 The Christian culture ruined all of that, a lot of women would usually become sangomas in the village and sometimes even act as advisors to kings. Women were believed to be highly connected with the spirits. They would learn, knitting, farming and treating leather and snake skins for clothing, until Christians said women this, women that. Hell some Nguni tribes had the Queen Mother, i-Ndlovukazi.

In the past, many black family of African decent served as exemplary models of unity and respect. In my youth, my siblings and I witnessed our father leading our family with our mother as his love, whom was the queen tof the house . Their authoritative voices were highly regarded within our household, guiding us and effectively managing family affairs. Unfortunately, contemporary feminism has adversely impacted the traditional black family of African decent family structure, diminishing both male and female roles. Presently, some black women aspire to assume the dominant role traditionally held by men, while men may feel disinclined or discouraged from fulfilling their responsibilities as household leaders. It is crucial for black women to embrace their rightful roles and cease striving to supplant men in family leadership.

my thing is ,there shouldnt be any basis for comparism in the first place, if everyone stick to their roles, for example their are things that women do better, there are also areas where men excel better .

You are right. People interpret that scripture wrongly. That men and women have different roles does not mean they are not equals in terms of substance. The wording of the scripture shows it speaks to gender roles not gender. It says "wives submit to your own husbands." It didn’t say women should submit to men.

With the question, "Anything a man can do, women can do better." I feel in some cases yes, but this question cannot be blanket. It's on a case by case basis. Example, 2 Dermatologists I know. Both Black, but one is a man & one is a woman. Known them for years. The man just has his medical Doctorate degree to practice Dermatology. The woman not only has her medical Doctorate degree, but also has a background in cosmetic chemistry. Even the man will admit that she was better than him in medical school & residency because of her scientific background in undergrad. His undergrad background was in Biology, while hers was in Chemistry & Physics. So in that case, the woman did it better, even though they don't see it like that. They both are medical colleagues who have their place in the field.

Im a strong supporter of feminism , that does not mean i have to accept it all , and we can disagree within it , but no one can say women should not get the same chances and respect . I dont like these type of questions as it makes it out as if culture is equal to human rights when it is not , all cultures can be good and bad but all people can be a feminist . Also there are so many great women in history even with the amount of crap men tried . And your husband gave the best example of support structures to help , and in the modern age that has changed where one can work more or with more pay etc , so how we help each other can change

Ok so when it comes to Africa most of the time the women is stay at home mom and the man is the one making money. So with that the women doesn’t really have much power. What is changing now is a woman working and the man working. That is costing problems.

Research Queen Modjadji. She's a South African monarch who marries husbands who take on her name. She also has wives. She's the Rain Queen. Feminism is not a foreign African concept. It's just that we observe culture. Many women, including myself are educated, wives, mothers, business owners etc. But at home you observe your role as a woman/wife and the man/husband. Western women feminists seem to want to be the men. They believe that women don't need men. That is not true. There is power in femininity and the most successful women have learnt the art of getting what they want without emasculating their men.
