Today we try something different! With the extra time at home we just finished reading Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston's definitive work, Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life. We highly recommend this incredible work which at once explores the history of animation at Disney and discusses and teaches design and animation fundamentals and principles in depth.
We got so interested in the subject matter we wanted to create a video about the "Nine Old Men" the animators who became the leaders of the studio, hired to create Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. That they did and to great acclaim and success.
There are many unsung heroes of Disney that we don't hear as much about, and it is true that opportunity was not equal when the company was born. Nonetheless, the artistic contributions of these nine men are substantial and their art is moving, emotional and memorable!
We hope you enjoy this look at Walt Disney's Nine Old Men.

In a recorded interview, Ollie Johnston explains that he designed the Merlin character (his face, at least), and that he used Walt Disney as the model, particularly his nose. Milt Kahl and Frank Frank Thomas also drew the character (and Kahl is credited in this video, and elsewhere, as Merlin's designer), but Johnston's statement remains. I'm sure that a collaborative effort (either behind the scenes, or officially) went into the design of many of Disney's iconic characters. My father, who disliked animated films, took me to see _The Sword in the Stone_ upon its initial release during the 1963 Christmas season, just beyond a month after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Looking back, I suppose the trauma of the killing of JFK might have been reflected in my father's decision to take me to the film. The Kennedy administration had been dubbed "Camelot" by the media in those days, and like the mythical King Arthur, the young President met an untimely end.

I love this information : I love art and creating art ; however at 13:52 , where the still from ‘ Dance of the Hours ‘ shows , at the bottom left corner , it says ‘ Fantajia 1940 “ - I just wanted to say that was incorrect , and it properly pronounced , “ Fantasia “

I do wish the Disney has Nine Old Lady too, that would be extremely empowering for female animators back in the early days of Disney Studio.

@@thomastsangthomas1616 I'm sure in the early days many were actively engaged in putting up barriers, but at least one, Eric Larsen mentored (and was an ally for) female animators as early as the 40's. Are you familiar with Retta Scott? She worked on Bambi, Fantasia and other as an animator, perhaps Disney's first female to get the credit. Thanks for the comment!
