If you’re inclined to write off a dog as “too much work” after two days, you have no business seeking to adopt a pet in the first place.

@@lizxu322 I understand your train of thought but as a rescuer of COUNTLESS new family furries..don't adopt unless you are ALL in. Foster for a few day or donate your time at a rescue first . It's unfair to the pet you adopt to be shuffled around.

My baby…the love of my life…who still has my heart 17 years after his passing…was in a cage trying to get my attention in a pet store in Arlington TX. As I walked away, my friend said, “He’s looking to see where you are going.” I asked to hold him, and the pet store employee told me, “A family brought him back. They say he doesn’t like people.” I remember thinking, “Well he seems to like ME.” He came home with me, and quickly became the love of my life. He was three months old when he chose me, and he passed in my arms at 16 and a half. Our bond was magical.

My dog has been returned many times before I adopted him. The shelter wasn't seeking a family anymore when I got him. All of this happened just because he was shy and very scared of people, instead of being extrovert and cuddly. Now he's the most adorable and loving creature in the world 🥰

The darn cheek that the shelter wasn't seeking a family anymore. What then? Would he just have stayed there in isolation? Then at that point a decision should have been made to rather set his spirit free and have him to sleep. We are all pro life as far as possible, but what was more cruel???

There's a reason when we say "you don't pick the dog, the dog picks you" and is so true. I have a little dog that fostered her during her pregnancy, the puppies were adopted, and somebody took her (the mom) for adoption, in less than a month she escaped from that house and came back to me. After that, I couldn't let her go with another human, and now she's with me.

have a similar story. i grew up with dogs my whole life. when i moved out on my own i lived in apartments for several years and when i bought my first house, i wanted a dog. I waited 6 months after and adopted a shelter dog. i brought her home and she just could not adjust to being in a home. she only knew the shelter the first 6 months of her life. i took her back to the shelter and asked if she had been abused because she was literally afraid of everything. it was the worst feeling of my entire life leaving her there until i had to go back and give her a second chance. like it was god telling me i had to go back and try again. aside from getting married and having a son, bringing my future best friend back into my home was the best decision of my life. 11 years later and she is literally the best friend i ever had. god bless you if you took the time to read this and hope it inspires you to always be kind to animals and let them into your lives if you have the means.

lots of people including dog owners seem to have absolutely no concept of respecting dogs, they just expect to be able to do whatever they feel like doing with a dog, and if the dog isn't happy about that, they think the dog is broken.

Some people are like that with children as well as pets. I've seen people have kids to fill some need or emotional hole for themselves and act like they are just excited to get some live doll to play with or something. Seriously do not have kids or pets if you are that selfish people! They both require a lot of work and patience and need to be respected as individual beings with their own emotions and needs.

I raised many dogs from puppies but adopted Layla at a year and a half. Based on the paperwork this is her first real home. She had an intestinal parasite when I got her so after a week, I left her at the vet for some tests. She must have thought she'd been rejected again, after all the back room is full of kennels. She was very excited when I picked her up, but what really got to me was when we were home, she ran outside through the dog door, which I assumed meant she needed to pee. Instead, I watched her sprint to the end of the dog run and back in without stopping. The happiness in her eyes and overall excitement showed me how much it meant to her to finally have a home.

@@ashotoftequila3426 1. About "beggar": All its survival capabilities have been bred out during the ancient human project of domesticating the wolfs. So, the dogs can only survive depending on human charity. They beg the humans for food and all other essentials for surviving, because they could not survive without the human help. 2. About "mentally retarded". The dog species came from ancient wolves after downgrade. The today dog brain is 30% smaller than today wolf's. That's an average among all dog species. Even a 6 month old wolf puppy easily outsmarts any adult dog on this planet. So, dogs are mentally rearded compared to their ancestors. If humans disappeared all other animals would be very happy but the dogs. The dogs would disappear 2-3 weeks after humans, when they would have consumed every human food leftovers. You are absolutely right. Ive fostered many, many dogs. When speaking with a potential adopter, I am as honest as possible about the dog, their quirks, strengths, things they need to work on etc. I want to make sure the adopter and the dog fit well with each other. For instance, a dog like Chips would only go to a quiet household with people who are experienced working with fearful dogs and with reward based training backgrounds. No younger kids, no busy lifestyle with people coming and going constantly and any other pets (sometimes another pet is the perfect thing to bring a fearful dog out of their shell) would have to be well matched personality wise. Even then, sometimes I see people get starry eyed over a potential dog regardless of how well that dog would fit in their life, or they havent really any thought into the 10-15 year commitment of time, resources, and emotion owning a dog requires.

I so agree with your statement. Also, some people don't know the first thing about dogs & they go and adopt or worse purchase a dog for the status they can provide. However. They don't exercise, socialize or play with the dog or even clean up after the dog. Then they complain about the dog misbehaving when in fact, it is they who are failures for not providing the care that a dog needs.

Many people get a dog when what they need is a house plant . Water it give it a little light and you can feel accomplished. An animal is not like that. They need you as much as you need them. Food, understanding, time, scratches on the belly and petting on the ears. Snuggles on the couch. If you're the type that thinks dogs or cats belong in one space of the house or outside, not on the furniture or you don't have the time to put into a pet . If you can't see yourself treating it like family, don't get an animal.

We fostered a pup just like Chips. His name is Houdini, he escaped the euthanasia handler at the shelter, then escaped into the parking lot. He ended up back at the shelter a month later. K9 Spirit rescued him then brought him to us. Houdini was super sketchy, they can only assume he was a stray most of his life. It took him about 3 months before he trusted us. I would say about 1 year before he was a part of our pack. He's been with us for almost 6 years now, and he's not going anywhere. We fostered easily in total about 30-40 different dogs over 7 years. For some of them that came from a kill shelter, when I saw them finally relax, I could see a relief from them like they haven't slept for days. We all know dogs can sense death, and when its close, so when they get rescued and get to a safe foster home they know its going to be okay. Nothing has ever been more rewarding than fostering dogs. Yes. Your heart breaks when you adopt them out, but they are alive, and a broken heart can heal, and love again. That is much easier than being trapped in a kennel, alone, unloved, then being put to death because your time is up. Be an amazing human and foster if you can. Many rescues who are well funded provide food, bowls and cover veterinary bills too, so you're just giving your home and your heart.

Nope! Sorry but if all one is willing to put in to a rescued pet is 2 days then they cop out then that tells me they are not legit pet people because even a dog raised from a new born pup is 11 to 15+ years of your time and effort. I have 3 dogs and all are rescued dogs when they were less than a year old. 1 is originally mine and the other two dogs I inherited by way of my brother's passing and my Mother's passing. I am single and hold a steady job from moving till evening and take all 3 dogs a good walk 4 to 6 days a week depending if the weather is good. I alone pay all their vet bills. It's a lot of work but I would never give them up because saying oh they are too much work. So from my point of view from a single Man with 3 dogs, if you're not willing to commit to a pet, then don't even consider it. Too many of my fellow Americans have become too darn selfish and physically lazy to put work in o a pet.

It is SO PRECIOUS to see the light in her eyes, now that she's found someone and somewhere she can trust. Great job, you guys!!!!! God bless you all :)
