My wife and I rescued and fostered 73 greyhounds in a two year period. Taught them how to play ball, climb stairs, know what a screen door was. Just how to be a plain old dog. Some adapted swiftly others took a while. ALL of them turned out to be great gentle animals. We quit because every time we watched a family drive away with them our hearts would break. We kept the last two......

I adopted a rescue who just wouldn't connect with anyone, driving away potential adopters. When I got to the shelter after a 3 hour drive,he just completely ignored me and paced up and down the hallway. I wasn't leaving without him so I waited patiently. At one point I got off the floor and sat in a chair to give him space. I guess he realized I wasn't going away like others had, and suddenly, after ignoring me for half an hour, he ran over and jumped in my lap! He had decided I was the right person. He and I are inseparable now, and he's very protective and possessive of me now, and I make sure he never has cause to regret his decision to adopt me! The change in him has been amazing, and the vet said whatever I'm doing to keep on doing it. Really, all I do is give him lots of love and spoil him rotten! The dog no one wanted has become a very happy, loving dog. I couldn't be happier!

Dogs are the best four legged friends 🥰. When they are in a loving home, you can have a really bad, frustrating day. When you come home, and they see you, tails wagging, and just want to jump on you and give you their love, all your days frustrations just fly away. They truly lift your spirits. Deep down, i think it's because we know that dogs can't do some of the things that give us humans joy, like driving your favorite car, taking a vacation where you want, eating so many types of food, going to a great concert or show, etc. They lead a relatively simple life, running in the park, going to the beach, playing with us. For them to give us so much joy even after they have experienced so much pain and suffering is truly heartwarming. Dogs Rule 😇

I find it incredibly distressing when dogs are left in shelters for eons or have been subjected to abuse by previous owners. On the flip side I’m glad there are decent people out there with a lot of love in their hearts, a patient soul and a wonderful home that’s full of safety and compassion! My old lady of 9 years found her first dog this way. A 1yr old German/Dane. Wouldn’t give the time of day to anybody, until a little 10 year old walked in and plopped on the floor of his kennel. Walked up, laid on her lap and it was a best friend/protector relationship ship after that. RIP Gus

Love seeing this, really touches me. We adopted two boys from overseas; horrible stories, one was in a plastic bag on a construction site. They were frail and scared. We've had them a little over two years now. They both never leave our sight. One of them sticks to my leg while I eat or do anything. They became quite big and full of muscle and my daughter is only five and sometimes tries to hug them and grabs them around the neck and never once did they react, they just let her and so gentle. One of them sits by her bedroom and always guards her. In the morning when she gets up to watch TV they both lie near her and make sure she's OK. And every morning they somehow know when I wake up and run to the side of the bed to say hello and fight to get my attention. They are seriously the best and they appreciate so much. We can't imagine our life without them now.

I'm doing a dog behavioral course at the moment and just recently there was a bit saying it is now scientifically proven that dogs (and cats etc) HAVE emotions (can't recall whose research it was). So if anyone says otherwise they are uneducated and shouldn't be even talking on the matter. And yes, bless Darvish!

This was the exact same process I went through with my rescue Great Pyrenees. She was 12 months old, 95 lbs, and scared to death! I had to put my mattress on the floor in those first MONTHS to get her to lay down beside me. I fed her by hand. She stayed in one spot for the first 12 hours. And in one room for the first 3 days. It was hard. It's been 3 years now. She and I are tight! She weighs almost 140 lbs now and I am as safe as I've ever been! lol She is still afraid of so many noises and still doesn't let others touch her. But she will approach people at the dog park. She loves to be off leash there. And she is never far from me. She is an awesome soul. Just like this dog here. They just need the right person.

I too root for foster fails when I can just tell these beings belong together. We have three cats currently in a literally tiny home: two of our own "fails" that are strays we intended to shelter and then home, and the elderly shelter-rescue void we'd had for years when we moved here. The two fails are a huge ginger tom who was terrified for weeks, and a big lovely void that was so skinny and so frantic to be helped/saved with the rolls and the trills, yet fled when I got near, that I thought he was a she and in heat for nearly a week. My husband "failed" at the first and I "failed" at the second, lol. We both occasionally freak out remembering how close we came to giving them up. Sometimes you just know this one BELONGS with you. And I mean--IS it a failure? Your goal was to make this lovely being feel safe and loved and help them find a forever home--and they did! Lion Baby came first. My husband has actually had nightmares where instead of what he actually DID in real life: saying "I'm not doing this to him he's terrified," and putting him down to flee, that he actually put our big orange lion baby in the carrier to go to a shelter--and when he wakes up from that one, he has to go find the big orange lion baby JUST to be SURE. And to hug him. The day after he refused to do that to Lion Baby, he asked to speak to me and told me flatly that cat was staying, if he had to build him his OWN house outside of our teeny house, and duct our AC/heat into it, if he had to pawn things to neuter him, but that cat was staying. That he would not betray the trust that cat had FINALLY given him, and basically "Fight me. He stays." I was so proud of him. No, I did not fight him even a little, and I'm so glad I did not. Why yes, I did marry well and wisely and I try to be grateful for it every day. The newest void, the one that's my "fault" that we thought was female, finally followed me into a friend's house, with happy encouragement as the friend wanted to help too. Her elderly grandma cat was very calm and OUR cats were like F YOU OTHER CAT GET OUT, so, yeah. We wanted to see if "she" had even ever been a house cat or could be. New void explored a little, very cautiously but "she" was still doing it, good baby! And then, baby walked across me to reach the resident cat's food dish. I had not yet seen the baby up close in decent light and I saw HE was very male, VERY young, very very malnourished, and littered with scars and wounds of various ages, none huge, but...... When I was done having a giant allergy attack I flatly said he was not going back to whatever had left him like that. He's a chubby wubby placid calm boo, now. I thought he was nearly hairless when I met him, but no, just incredibly malnourished and unwell and stressed and......and now, he looks sort of like a seal. Very black but sleek and short and glossy. He's almost as big as Lion Baby and they play and rampage together! If you've seen How to Train Your Dragon, he's basically Toothless as a cat. The point of my ramble that no one is still reading is this: I love our babies SO much, and: Foster fails are forever-home successes!
