These hermit crabs in Okinawa, Japan are living in plastic they find on the beaches because of shell over-collection. This man has started a hermit crab conservation project to help remove trash and offer them new shell homes. He even carves sweet messages on the shells for whoever may find them!

I honestly , had no idea I was part of the hermit crab's problem of finding suitable shelter each time I pick up a shell from the coastal areas. This has been a wake up call and I will no longer collect them. In fact on my next visit, I will be taking all the various shells I've collected over the years and spread them around where I found them before.

I love the stories like this, about people helping our smallest animals, because they know that every life is important...to the Earth, and to the animal living it. I love how quickly the crabs left their plastic homes behind for the chance to live in a beautiful shell. That made it so clear that the plastic caps really are a last resort for them, and definitely not a preferred choice.

Second time this week I've seen a story about hermit crabs being found living in plastic "shells". We really don't deserve this planet, and the last thing we need to be doing is making it too deep out into the stars to ruin that as well. Shout-out to this guy for doing what he can though ✊🏾

That sentiment is nice, but making it out into space would actually not only help us avoid destroying our planet at an even faster pace (because people would be diverted to living off-planet), space is also literally endless and devoid of other life forms. Any damage/trash we could ever inflict on anything out there would not even be a drop in the proverbial ocean, and there would be no harm to wildlife, because there isn't any. If you really care about the environment and planet, you should WANT humankind to develop widespread and commercially-available space travel/other-planet inhabitation.

Some species do eventually discard the shells. The coconut crab is a species off hermit crab but they only use shells when they are young as adults grow way to big for shells and most animals likely won't try their luck with an adult crab. I absolutely adore this guy and his work. I'm not at a beach very often, but when I go, I do like to look for beach glass and shells. I've always looked in the shell first to see if it's occupied, But, I hate to admit, it never occurred to me I'm reducing the housing market! What kindness and compassion. I want to spread the love and share on my 2 social media apps. And, hopefully inspire others.

It's so refreshing to find someone who has the heart to care for such an "insignificant" animal as these crabs and taking the time and trouble to provide them with shells 🐚 (even several) they can choose from.

A small and simple gesture, but making such a different to those little guys. Thank you for your kindness for something so easily overlooked! 😊❤
