How to replace the EGR valve on a VAG 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.5 / 1.6 TDI VW AUDI SKODA SEAT

Today we going to replace the EGR valve in this case the polo 1.2 TDI. But it would be the same on the 1.4/1.5 and 1.6 engines from the VAG group. Just be sure that you get the right EGR valve for your engine. They all look the same but are different!
But it almost the same if not the shame on the cars listed below.

Thanks guys. Saved me hours. A few tips: I did mine on a 6J model, perhaps yours was the previous model. Lower the subframe as far as it will go (about 40mm). Don't bother to disconnect the steering column. Disconnect drive shaft at engine end. After undoing 3 nuts at other end of suspension, pull out shaft. Make sure you pull brake disk well out, then you can lower the shaft to the ground (I only discovered this when re-assembling, would have given me much more space). Carefully remove vacuum actuator on new unit and the lower water pipe as you can put these back when the unit is bolted in. You may need to saw off one of the loose-fitting lugs on the new pipe to get it back in.

Great video. Thankyou for doing it in English. I've just had mine replaced on my vw golf plus tdi sport. 1.6 diesel. It has now explained. Why the bill was big. But now I am happy. Because of all the work that goes in to replace it. Great video. Heath 🇬🇧

Great video mate but anyone watching debating to do this or pay someone else here a little bit of advice just do it it is really easy and straightforward a couple tips the video don't show you first thing take all the intake pipes off the turbo Inc air filter box if you don't have a 17mm crows foot for the feed pipe on the turbo remove X3 Allen bolts holding the actuator on top to give a little room to use a normal 17mm spanner you don't need to drop sub frame or disconnect the rack you don't have to remove the driveshaft either and park the car facing a post or something sturdy and just remove gearbox rear mount place the bolt back in the bracket on the gearbox and use a rachet strap off the post or sturdy object to rotate the engine as much as possible soon as the egr is free remove the coolant hoses and you can wiggle and jiggle the egr out between the driveshaft and subframe assembly is annoying the clips for the coolant hoses are a pain so when you refit egr get it up into position and then connect the hoses to the egr only and then bolt the egr back and then connect the hoses to the coolant line those clips in such a tight space is hell 🤣

Excellent video, they should make the engineers who design where these EGR valves go work on them for a week or two, perhaps they would put things in a better place so we can remove them when we need to.!!!

after doing many repairs by my self on this type of a small tightly packed cars I figured out that the quickest way to work on things connected to the engine (gearbox, egr, timing belt etc.) is actually to use a hoist.. disconnect all the hoses, pipes and cables from the engine and lift it out and place it aside and work on it. much quicker!!

Tering, weer een voorbeeld van het inefficiënte concept van VAG motoren. Wat een gedoe om dat ding te vervangen! Andere fabrikanten hebben het toch wel beter voor elkaar wat betreft het sleutelen tbv onderhoud. Jullie inbreng is dus wel een hulp voor de VAG diy community!

Heb gelezen dat de Polo 6R ontwikkeld is voor 300k km, daar was de distributie ook op uitgelegd. Die is later naar 225k gezet en de EGR gaat bij vlot gebruik ook ca 300k mee. Intussen weten we dat behalve zuinig zijn en het blok er niet veel deugt aan het karretje. Maar dat verklaart wel waarom vervanging een bitch is het was namelijk niet de bedoeling. Dacht altijd dat Piech een kleinzoon van Porsche was, maar dit lijkt nergens op.

Sometimes i am curious how people take on certain jobs, i have replaced roughly 2 maybe 300 of these EGR coolers/valves and encountered that the thread of the EGT sensors have the habit of getting messed and making the 1.5 hour job a full day one 😂. Pro tip: just undo the sensor connectors and take the DPF out with the sensors attached or else you will have a good chance of having a very shitty day 🙃 But nice video and explained very well over all 👍

great video guys! Im about to do it now.. just a tip from past expirience, unbolt the power steering from the subframe (4 bolts from undernith, 2 each side) way easier than disconnecting it from steering column.

After years of owning diesels this is why I am thinking it's just not worth it anymore, Long gone are the days of the legendary Perkins Prima 2.0 or the XUD I had in my 405 estate.

Hello the Dutch, there's a black plastic cover in the back of the EGR motor that covers EGR moving mechanism, I would like to ask you if the black plastic cover can be removed with out removing EGR from the engine? Great video and very informative. Thanks for posting

Zoveel werk voor een beetje uitstoot vermindering en het gaat ook nog is vaak kapot in vw's. Heb hem software matig uitgeschakeld.

Ok, here i am thinking it is just removing a few parts to get to the EGR valve. You practically need to remove the entire engine, almost. Who came up with such design?

It's a bit hard to tell but if your not daily job I would say 8 hours.

Did you need to realign the EGR afterwards using VCDS ? My EGR on a 1.4 tdi has been replaced but I still get the coil pack light intermittently flashing along with the same error when I scan the ECU

No it just went away after installing the new unit. Maybe we did clear the codes but I don't remember anymore.

That's annoying indeed. Check for leaks and that the connector connection is sollid.

Yes, but you will need to reprogram te ecu.

No I did not, wordt just fine. But I did reset the fault code with an obd scanner.

You could try to clean it with carbon cleaner.

I sure do, but sometimes it's just more convenient to use hand tools. Also microfoons don't like air tools.

Voor de slangenklemmen zijn heel gemakkelijke tangetjes te koop. De VW stekkers zijn rot dingen, daar heb ik ook altijd ruzie mee. Ik ga het hele subframe verwijderen dan kan de uitlaat blijven zitten.

Why o why do these company’s especially German manufactures design these parts that have to replaced in the most awkward places just been quoted £800 for basically a service part . Had a egr valve replaced on a xtype jag less than £300 and the seat Ibiza is supposed to be a cheap run about

That... My friends, is a pain in the ass.... Almost more efficient too take the hole engine out of the chassis.... If the car has gone opp too 200000km, consider take the engine out an change the clutch and flywheel, timing belt and water pump and the egr system. You then should have 150- 200000km without these common issues. Of course you would have too do the normal long life services. But thats only kontrolls and changeing filters and fluid.
