Alan, you really do not know how much this has cheered me up. M&W, to those of a certain age, will be immortal. Skits like "Singing in the Rain", the plays wot Ernie wrote and their Christmas shows will live forever in our hearts. RIP Eric & Ernie, two true Gods of comedy.

They were truly gifted at comedy. The 3 of them were very good friends. The sketch's I really liked was Morecombe and wise with Shirley Bassey as she tries to sing or the sketch with Andre Previn (Andrew Preview)

I saw Eric and Ernie doing their stage show at the Liverpool Empire where they did their first show as a double act in the 1940s - no it wasn’t that show. I don’t remember much about it, other than it was very funny. Every time one of their Xmas shows was on the TV, you cancelled any other plans. In our house, you ceremoniously opened the Xmas box of Black Magic chocolates and fought over the best ones before the show started so you didn’t miss any of the jokes. Singing in the rain; the breakfast stripper sketch; Shirley Bassey and the revolving stage; Tom Jones’ back up singers; the BBC newsreaders performing in South Pacific’s, “Nothing like a dame”; even Glenda Jackson, but especially Andre Previn and Rachmaninov’s piano concerto. Eric and Ern have never been replaced.

Des O'Connor has a great singing voice. I remember Eric and Ernie, along with Russ Abbott, and a few others , would poke fun at Des' singing, but he really is good. If you want to know how good he was, listen to him sing "sweet Caroline" with Neil Diamond.

You're absolutely right about the shit talking. This stuff used to be normal and everyone understood it was in good fun, now people would likely have to apologise for offending someone or because they hurt someone's feelings. It's such a terrible shame because this is the sort of thing which makes life fun and entertainers entertaining.

The guy presenting the show is David Frost, who famously interviewed Richard Nixon. Des O'Connor used to have a programme of his own where, every week, he'd have a new comedian come on, have a chat and do some of their act. Des was pretty mainstream/family entertainment but he knew good comedy when he heard it and, back in the 80's, brought over Joan Rivers and Bill Hicks amongst others, neither of whom was mainstream!

What a bloody nice upbeat happy post. Truly enjoyed watching E.B love our humour. The is such innocence and kind hearted fun in this old comedy that most modern UK comedians just do not seem clever enough to be able to master. Although the USA did have one of the best clever comics of all time. Don Rickles.

I repaired des O'Connors dishwasher back in the day. He was walking around in his dressing gown. He made me a cheese and pickle sandwich and a cup of coffee and asking about my family and the band I was in. I was telling him about the time my drum kit fell off the drum riser and he was crying with laughter. A really down to earth guy. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

Thrilled as always to see you watch and enjoy these moments with us bro, it’s great to relive such happy memories from childhood, at the same time sad to think that not one of these gents are with us anymore, they’ve all passed away. If you’re not familiar with David Frost who was the presenter on this show he was the guy that got Nixon to confess and apologise for his Watergate sins, he was an incredibly talented journalist tbh despite being viewed as ‘just another talk show host’. If you’ve not seen it I would highly recommend the movie Frost/Nixon, directed by Ron Howard who took it to the Big Screen after seeing the play of the same name in London. It really is very good and goes behind the scenes of how Frost landed the interviews and how it came close to ruining him. Highly recommended!
