The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The year was 1955. And I was in my first year of junior high. 7th grade. These guys ruled the radio and their voices and strong harmony made my heart ho into my throat. What a song! Dancing to it at our school dances. What a feeling...and memory that was.

Music from another time where the melody was valued and revered. I would say that since the 80s we have been forgetting that the voice is the main, most powerful and most democratic musical instrument, and that vocal harmonies can sound as wonderfully good as this one and even more. I know that these words will sound like an anachronism, but nowadays anyone can become a successful singer, the levels of demand and vocal preparation have fallen to the ground and the potential audience buys whatever the producers want to sold, and the music has ended up becoming simple, minimalist and predictable...

Huge #1 hit and this appearance is right before the song debuted on the charts to start its spectacular run. I have a feeling these guys knew they had struck gold when they recorded this song and their delivery most certainly reflects that confidence.

@@hothemeep1219I was talking about where it was the main music of the masses, like Big Band music was the tops of the charts and hearts of the American teens in the 30’s and 40’s. All a still around but, most youth look down there noses at it and or it looked on as nostalgia….I agree it’s a shame.

singing sure has changed since the good old days. hated this kind of music as a kid in the 60s but gained a whole new appreciation, doesn't hurt being a musician but taste wise I didn't get til now, too old to rock and roll too young to die🎙️

Ah, I'm so excited to see this! The Four Aces singing their Billboard number one hit "Love is a Many Splendored Thing". This is the original version, and the song was the theme for the 1955 movie of the same name starring William Holden and Jennifer Jones. Along with "Three Coins in the Fountain", this song provided the best-selling record for the Four Aces. The group members are lead singer Al Alberts, Lou Silvestri, Dave Mahoney and Rosario "Sod" Vaccaro. The song was written by Sammy Fain & Paul Francis Webster and proved to be so popular in 1955 that several competing versions also charted (by David Rose and His Orchestra, Don Cornell, Woody Herman and His Orchestra and Don, Dick and Jimmy). However, none were as successful as the original by the Four Aces. Thank you so much for posting this great performance! I love the rare footage of '50's singers performing their hit singles on the show! It would be great to also see more '50's and early '60's vocal groups like the Four Lads, the Four Preps, the Four Coins, the Fontane Sisters, the Chordettes, the Lettermen, the Brothers Four, the Browns, as well as more by the the Platters, the Ames Brothers and the Four Aces.

@@that70sgirl90 Yes, indeed! He hosted the talent show after his days of music stardom. The Four Aces were one of the most popular vocal groups of the '50's and inspired a lot of other groups with similar names (Four Lads, Four Preps, Four Coins, Four Freshmen, etc.). Al tried a solo music career for awhile but didn't recapture the success he had with the Aces. It's great to hear from you! I hope the month of May has been a good one for you so far!

If it were not for the Four Aces, the Beatles would have never existed. Al Alberts became one of John Lennon's favorites as a kid when he was gifted this record on his 15th birthday.

, no if it wasnt for the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry Little Richard and Gene Vincent there would be no Beatles! And I dont think back in 57 when John and Paul had the skiffle band The Quarreymen, Silver Beatles, and also Johnny and the Moondogs, ever covered the Four Aces or sounded like them, but that is a cool story about john being gifted with this record.
@christinah7716
@christinah7716 Жыл бұрын
@@recordguy4321 it was the Four Aces who actually inspired all those guys. Buddy Holly first heard them in 1949 and this inspired him to start writing songs as a teen in Lubbock. It's amazing that the inspirational reach of Al Alberts touched both Buddy and John Lennon, who was also inspired by Buddy as well.

@@bubbaschwartz I think Elvis would have most likely enjoyed listening to the Four Aces. He had so many influences and different tastes in music. People keep saying he was influenced by black blues singers, but they never mention all the white groups and singers like Dean Martin. Elvis was a sponge and that's why he could sing any type of song, and in most cases, sing it better than the original singer.

I came to know the four aces from an fm radio, when radio ruled. Me born in 65 and living in Turkey. Still they would be bigger kings today than they were back then, say they played their songs more often, every now and then... All the best to them and lovers.

Impressive. Talk about breath control! Can't say I like the slow-tempo, swing style, I much prefer the movie's straight-time, up-tempo version, but at least they sing it rhythmically, unlike Sinatra, Nat Cole, etc., who all rubato the life out of the melody.
