The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I was a director in Memphis when Abbe Lane & Xavier Cugat took over the Eddie Fisher Coke show on NBC. The show was one of the first in color. She was/is a knockout!

Abbe is still alive. She remarried in 1964 and had at least 2 children. She played Bibi Gallini on The Brady Bunch. Remember her now? 😉

Ed Sullivan channel, I want to thank you so much for increasing your uploads to 5 videos a day today! I hope that this will be a permanent change, because more uploads means we will get to see a lot more that we wouldn't otherwise. I know there is supposed to be just a year and a few months left in the original contract with UMe, and there are thousands of performances left in the archives which hasn't been posted. So, thank you so much for this; the more uploads a day the better (so even more would be great too! :)!

@@ABALLAM3 I think it would be a great amount. After all, they only have a limited amount of time to post these videos if the original reports were correct (three years and we are already over halfway through that time period), so more videos means we get to see more of the archives. Less videos means we don't get to see as much, unless they renew the music contract . I'd love to see even more than 5 if possible. People are mostly just going to click on the videos they are interested in anyway, and the videos are pretty short.

In 1952 Lane married bandleader Xavier Cugat, who was 32 years her senior. They divorced two years after this appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

@@davemcallister6650 no, not a problem at all. Cugot was a friend of my musician father and lived off and on at our apartment in the fifties when he was in town. His real name was Juan Epstein. Back then Latin artists were not able to stay at the hotels they performed in. Many orchestra members stayed at our home.

I believe Cugat was one of the great big band leaders of the era of that genre. Abbe became known as a singer through him. She was his fourth wife. Unfortunately, it is reported that he mistreated her physically and psychologically.
