The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Such power and emotion! Lana Cantrell is a force of nature here ... a force that starts out softly and keeps building in intensity ... like a gentle breeze that grows into a hurricane, a light rain that intensifies into a deluge. Amazing performance!

What a great talent. I had such a crush on her when I was a teenager. The voice, the emotion she displayed in her singing, the great mannerisms and the way she used her hands, and her great hair styles. She really was the whole package, as they say. A great performer. Retired too soon from singing, but I guess nightclubs and variety shows became scarce in the 1970's and 1980's. Happy to read she had a fulfilling second career as an entertainment lawyer. Americans usually think of Helen Reddy or Olivia Newton-John when they think of Australian singers in America, but I always felt Lana was as great.

Yes, the standards singers nearly became extinct in the 1970s. I read a bit of this lady and indeed the demand for her singing collapsed during that time, being reduced to the nightclubs as youm mentioned along with paltry pay for the band. Too bad.

she could out sing Helen Reddy, and Olivia Newton-John together on her worst day.

A Beautiful song from one of The Greatest Love Stories of all time. Lana sung that song just how it should have been sung. Like she's playing the role of Juliette...with heartfelt emotion. ~💚💔💙~ Thank you for sharing ! 💖

My mom saw her sing My Way on The Ed Sullivan Show and for the next couple of decades, we traveled around to see her perform, 2 shows, every night for 2 weeks, and then some!!! In my younger years, I used to love to belt out songs with her albums! Btw, this is an absolutely beautiful and incredible performance. Wow. Those were the days....

Terrific singer---I purchased all six of her RCA albums in the late '60s. She performed quality material and she compares favorably with any of the other top female vocalists of the period.

My mom bought all her records too. We were HUGE fans and got to know her a tad. And one time, in San Diego, she was talking about her single, Like A Sunday Morning and my mom says, "I bought 13", so she says, "oh that's where they all went"!!! Great memories.

yes, I have all of her LPs too. The last one was the weakest because RCA wasn’t behind her anymore. They felt times were-a-changing.

why does everybody have to compare female singers of the era to Streisand while they have their place, Streisand‘s performances are too histrionic in many places. She is not nuanced very often. Streisand is all about showing off her high notes. this delivery was very well crafted and perfectly executed. I doubt that there’s been a better or more effective interpretation.

Lana released six albums from 1967-69 and received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist of 1967. In the 70s, there was not as much interest in artists who perform standards and therefore newer artists like Lana were not in high demand. Such a shame because we missed out on hearing more of her wonderful voice. One of the lone exceptions was in 1975 with her song, "Like A Sunday Morning". Check it out on KZfaq.
