As a local I can definately help you with what foods you should try. Salty foods: 1-) Çiğköfte: It's a heavyly spiced cold meze. It was originally made from uncooked ground beef and bulgur (a local type of wheat) but nowadays they made it from only bulgur. You can eat it 2 ways. Either you can put it over to a slice of lettuce or lavaş (wrap) it. You need to put hot souce, nar ekşisi (a sour souce made from pomegranate) and lemon juice as topping but it's optional. You can eat it from theese chains, Adıyamanlı Çiğköfteci Mehmet Usta or Oses Çiğköfte. Also if you find it on a kebap restaurant you went, you can consume it there as well. It's name means raw meatballs. 2-) Adana kebap: It's a type of little hot and spicy meatball. Usually made from combination of beef and lamb meat. You can eat in a lavaş or on plate with bulgur, I recommend plate but they both good. If you don't like hot food there is a plain version and it's called Urfa kebap. For better experience you should eat it from Adanalı Hasan Kolcuoğlu. It's name come from a city named Adana. 3-) Sucuk: It's a heavyly spiced beef sausage like pepporoni. You should eat it with fried eggs or bread like a warm sandwich. You can eat it almost everywhere. 4-) Kokoreç: It's heavyly cleaned lamb intestins with lots of spices but it's very good. You can eat it on plate or in bread but I prefer to eat ot in bread. You can put pickled hot pepper as topping but this is optional. They are very good street food stands around Karaköy and Taksim, also Çengelköy Kokoreççisi is also very famous. 5-) İskender: It's beef döner (known as kebap in US) on a plate with pide bread under, a semi-sweet tomato sauce and hot butter over and yoghurt beside it. It's only comes on a plate and some places make it with chicken döner but don't even try it beef is better and original. You can put dryed thyme as topping but it's optional. There isn't a best place in Istanbul, you can eat it anywhere but best place to it is in city of Bursa named Iskenderoğlu Kebapçısı. It name comes from a chef who invented it centuries ago named İskender. 6-) Poğaça: A pastry mostly consumed on breakfasts. They are a few different types of it. I recommend with ground beef (kıymalı), dill (otlu) and feta cheese (beyaz peynirli). You can buy it from every pastry. 7-) Simit: It's the famous pastry with sesame seeds on it. You should (optional) eat it with feta cheeese or cream cheese while drinking tea. It's better to buy it from street stands. Desserts: 1-) Baklava types: They are lots of baklava typed mostly with pistachio and walnut. You should try plain pistachio and walnut, fıstıklı şöbiyet and sütlü nuriye. You can put icecream or kaymak (a type if milk cream) as topping. Mado and Faruk Güllüoğlu is best places to eat it. 2-) Künefe: A type of sweet pastry with cheese and pistachio in it. You can put kaymak or icecream as topping. I strongly recommend Beyzade (it's little pricy) but Mado is good as well. 3-) Katmer: A type of warm pastry with pistachio and kaymak in it. I strongly recommend it, this is my favorite dessert. Again, yiu can eat it on Beyzade or Mado. 4-) Lokma: A type of fried pastry like doughnut. You can eat it everywhere. Drinks: 1-) Ayran: Salty yoghurt drink. Should consumed cold. You can buy it everywhere. 2-) Boza: A cold drink made from wheat. It's very hard to describe it's taste. One if the things you will either love or hate it. I only recommend Vefa Bozacısı (you can find their products in stores as well). Cinnamon and leblebi (roasted chickpea)is must have toppings. 3-) Rakı: Strong alcoholic drink.

Probably the only food tour video on KZfaq describing Turkey's cuisine accurately even though the place you guys visited are highly touristy thus a bit pricey. But the way you approach and try the describe the dishes are very very accurate in terms of delivering the information about its authenticity. I subscribed only because if you guys are experiencing Istanbul this well, the other destinations you'll visit will be delivered to us at the same goodness :) There are endless options to try in Turkey's different regions but I think you had a good general view with the dishes in the video. I suggest Lakerda (salt cured fatty bonito), çiroz (chiroz, salt & sun cured a local fish specie). If you have chance to visit Antep (Gaziantep), the real center of meat-based eastern cuisine can be best found there, sure add the best Syrian restaurants in that city to the list. The next would be Antakya (Hatay) and Mardin which has similar styles but different dishes.

@mediiskit they invaded Serbia and other Balkan countries in the XIV century after a number of battles, Serbia won some the Ottomens won some but the they invaded up to the Danube and during Sulejman the Magnificent all the way to Vienna. Theyr rulers served as Serbian rulers, collected higher taxes for those who werent Muslim and took boys from the aged of 7 to 14 to train them for the army. There is a lot of very very old songs about a son killing his own family as a Ottoman Janicar and not recognizing them. Other countries didnt have theyr autonomy and werent ignoliged at all untill the 1850's so If that isnt ruling over somebody I dont know what is.

hey finally good to see you guys in istanbul. the green herb on most turkish food is parsley which is similar to cilantro but it is def. not dill. Menemen is an egg dish and even without meat it is *debatable* whether it is vegetarian or not. usually half the people in turkey would add peppers or onions in menemen and again it is a debated subject whether one should add onions or not. the type of dolma (stuffed peppers) you had is the cold appetizer version which is cooked with olive oil, and usually has pine nuts and currants in it. the entree version is served hot and very often it has ground beef in it. the stuffed grape leaves is called sarma, not dolma. dolma means stuffed and sarma means wrapped.

This was a very fun video to watch. I just wanted to say about the dolma. In Turkey there are 2 main kinds of dolmas: 1-Zeytinyağlı dolma (Dolma with olive oil). The rice stuffing inside the vegetable is cooked with olive oil, currants and pine nuts. This is served could and can be eaten with a tiny squeeze of lemon juice. This is what you got for dinner. 2- Eli dolma (Dolma with meat) The second kind of dolma has a rice stuffing is with tomatoes, onions and meat. This kind of dolma is served warm. This time instead of lemon juice it is served with yoghurt, either on the side or on top or as cacık (yogurt with cucumbers and mint). I wish you guys a good trip.

You must try iskender kebab and lahmacun as traditional meals, and kunefe as a dessert. You can also try kumpir and wet-burger something modern Turkish style fastfood. Raki goes with fish of course and it must be watered :) You can try it in a fish restaurant in istiklal street with Traditional Turkish Music as a dinner :)

Next time, There’s one thing I want from every tourist who come to İstanbul is to go around in the rich neighborhood (Bağdat Caddesi, Bebek..), I mean of course you guys wanna see the historical side of İstanbul but you’re also missing out so many beautiful things. And here’s my suggestions: you should have an open buffet breakfast in “Küçük Çamlıca Tepesi” (also visit Çamlıca Mosque) and in “Sarı Köşk - Emirgan Korusu”. You should absolutely visit “Yıldız Parkı” at this time of year (April-June). And there’s a huge and beatiful coast in Bostancı (right near Bağdat Caddesi) and finally you can enjoy the Amazing view of the third and newest bridge in İstanbul and of course the bosphorus if you can go to “Kuş Gözlem Kulesi (bird watching tower)” in Sarıyer. It goes on and on if you want to travel to İstanbul again dig more because there is a lot left believe me :D or I can make a short list about places or things to eat in İstanbul, if you need it just write me..

Ok, salep is made from ground orchid roots (no flowers at all), cooked slowly (usually like 20 mins) in milk and with added sugar. Orchid roots are rich in starch, that is what makes the foam and the thickness. You are right to taste ice cream because it is also used in vanilla ice cream. Salep is generally not a breakfast beverage but, why not? The bread seems like a whole wheat, sour dough bread to me, comes usually with added various seeds. Tavuk gögsü is actually like 10% real chicken breast meat, the rest is regular vanilla pudding. Breast meat is very lean and when added enough sugar, you wouldn't taste it, but you can feel it between your teeth. Dolma you had is "biber dolma" which means stuffed peppers. There are a wide range of dolma in Turkish cuisine so it is better to call them by their names. The one you had was cold because it is the olive oil "zeytinyagli) version of it. Almost all dolma varieties can also be prepared with meat stuffing and those are served hot. Turkish ravioli is a very wrong name. It is called "manti" and it is something totally apart from ravioli. I know people tend to call it Turkish ravioli but is is very wrong IMHO. It is more common to decorate mezes and menemen with parsley and it is what it looks like to me. Maybe it is dill, what do I know? I am Turkish. I hope you ad fun in Istanbul!

Stuffed peppers eaten at home would be warm, but if you have them out, they are usually served as meze or a side dish. thats why they are cold.

As a Turk, I've never heard about Tavuk Gögsü desert. But I'm assuming it would be a nice desert post workout since it should hold a decent amount of protein. Right? By the way, if you haven't tried it yet, give Iskender and Beyti a chance. Iskender is döner kebap on bread with yoghurt and a special tomato sauce. Beyti is adana kebap rolled in flatbread and also has yoghurt and the same tomato sauce with it. Give it a shot and thank me later!

I definately recommend you to try "kazandibi" which is similar to "tavuk gogsu" in density and milk taste, but is also has bitter burn taste and the dessert's name comes from this conscious burning while cooking it.

Salep is a winter drink. It's meant to warm you up :D You'll have salep street sellers all over Istanbul at winter. Comes in such a low supply from the fields thats why it is illegal to export it.
