Electronic expansion valve. In this video we'll be covering EEV electronic expansion valve to learn how they work and where they are used. We learn basic refrigeration cycle, compressor, condenser, evaporator and different types of expansion valves.
Correction:
06:15 The bulb refrigerant expands to OPEN the valve, not close the valve. Letting more refrigerant in.

Very nicely animated. Only there is a small mistake. in the valve, the rotor and axle rotate but should stay in place in order to make the valve move along the threaded axle...

Honestly this video was more educational than i got in school. Great pictures, great quality, great diagrams, English is clear and understandable, all around great vid. Need more like this on Turbines, Industrial refrigeration and more on electrical/pneumatic controllers. Amazing job by Engineering Mindset!

Once again, you've presented material in a video that's easy to understand by giving the viewer that "OOOHHHH" or "AAAAHHHH" moment! Obviously this new valve's technology will allow a much more finite adjustment of freon for a more constant temperature. I LIKE IT!

Thank you, big fan of your work! I would like to suggest a future video. Correlation between the EEV and an inverter compressor as well as more details on EEVs and PID control. PID control would be a huge one for me, how the refresh rates for each part of the control loop effect the process, when the control loop is normal acting or reverse acting and so on

Just after 6:00 of the video prompted me to scratch my head and review how these expansion valves work. I was puzzled when you said the TXV reacts to close down when superheat is too high, and open when superheat is too low. This is backwards compared to what I would expect, since high superheat is crying for more refrigerant flow, and low superheat puts the compressor at risk of receiving liquid refrigerant if flow were to increase further. Fortunately there is an excellent video describing this in more detail, done by the same author, titled "How TXV works..."! I believe that video explains the process correctly, high superheat leads to the TXV OPENING, increasing flow, not closing down. Then I opened the video description here and saw that you already acknowledged that minor error. It's too bad we can't do KZfaq annotations any more. Correcting that on the screen at the time stamp would have been much more clear.

Totally agree, I've requested the feature many times. As an educational channel we really should have the ability to edit such a simple mistake or at least make it easier to annotate. Obviously if it was noticed shortly after publishing we could re-upload but now there are thousands of websites linking to this video so it's too almost too late.

I'll partake in that discussion. Is it you want more,want the gov not to punish people into using it,want people to be force to,or are ya one of those that really thinks things through and are upset that while claiming that they want to do it,they still allow oil companies to buy up all the patents for batteries and other storage devices that would be pivotal in moving toward using mainly renewable energy? I do want use to switch,but I look at it like this,I want a new home,but at the moment I have no idea how I will be able to get one. So how about I burn down the home I'm living in,and then worry about IF I can find a way to build another or buy another. That's how I view what some people want done today. Instead of making sure it will be enough to sustain us before we switch to it,they say just switch and then worry about if it will work. I like the idea of changing the patent laws for inventions that could possibly "save the world" I want those people to still get rewarded for their inventions but not be allowed to hord the patents and hide them from the world. Most people don't realize that alot of what would be needed to move away from fossil fuels were already invented but bought up by the very same oil companies that it could put out of business. I personally would love to have my home using renewable energy and it be basically free,but I would not want fossil fuels to be done away with completely. I also dont want any government forcing people to make the switch,or trying to find ways to punish you until you do. Also and this is most important,never allow the gov to control or run the fossil fuel alternatives,ever!! People think that our electricity Bill's could be free if we use renewable and the give can make sure it all stays up and functioning. That's dumb,clearly the best way to help people and the planet is with innovation,that's the only solution to this problem "climate change,global warming,ice age or water world" whichever claim alarmists are making,the only solution is and will always be innovation. I hope most people have been able to learn that once you have a gov regulation or allow them to dictate their will onto an endeavor it immediately kills off all innovation,it has to. If I start a pizza shop and it isn't doing great but ok,and I leave that business to my kids with orders or "dont change anything" then when a new problem arrives and requires a new way if dealing with it,they cant. You have to allow private people to keep finding ways to improve. That goes for everything. Not allowing change is not allowing advancement. I would live to see some of the batteries that people are not allowed to make due to IP laws. I would love to see every house have a roof made of solor panels,and the panels made in a way that didnt enslave foreign children,or destroy the environment worse than the fossil fuels ever thought of. I would love to see more nuclear power plants built with every possible act of god planned for. I would love to see a 10$/month electric bill or no bill. But above all,I would still like to see other having the freedom of choice. The right to chose what way of living is best for each individual. I believe that if the gov stays out of it,people will invent and flock to the technology that improves their lives and the planet's. If we allow innovation people will gravitate towards what's in their best interests as well as their great grand kids intrest. Just my Hope's and opinions,thanks for hearing me out. Please let me know what you think,what you disagree with and why,and what you hope to see in the future. Have a great day.

Great Video! But can this also let the compressor be always operating and reducing its lifetime? instead of installing a variable speed compressor that reduces speed and operating cost. How we can combine these two points (reducing flow from the valve or from the compressor).

Wait until the damn valve gets clogged :/ That translates into a new coil last I experienced with a Trane a/h IIRC.

@@sprockkets Ah yes, the good 'ol Trane expansion valve problems. The only thing that stops a Trane is it's self. It's a shame when people spend all that money on a Trane and then it goes down. But of course, before you count the valve down and out, you must run the special sauce oil additive from Trane to see if that fixes it. I know fixed orifices aren't the most efficient, but they just work. If it gets clogged, you can clean it no big deal.

This is the pickiest of nit picks, but R410A's color scheme is pink, and the refrigerant it replaced, R22, is the green you've depicted.

I worked on a system in which the expansion valve was a simple solenoid valve. It was constantly opened and closed by a PLC according to temperature readings.

Refridgerant doesn't actually spray through an orifice as a part liquid gas. It flashes to a low pressure liquid and starts boiling to a gas evenly across the beginning of your coil being almost all liquid at the orifice and all gas at the vapor line exit. If you're undercharged you get liquid gas mix at the orifice and it boils rapidly pulling a lot of btu's and icing your coil.

Nice video, thanks! Nevertheless, I would like to mention a point: the expansion process in a refrigeration cycle is not like a spray of a liquid. While the expansion creates a mixture of liquid and vapor, the spray doesnt form any vapor and it is just a mechanical process.

Have I understoof this correctly? The target super heat is stored in the PID/controller, the evaporator valve will increase or decrease the flow and hence pressure to match this stored value? Or is the super heat value simply the error and should always return to 0?

You have a slight error in your schematic - the refrigerant always enters the condenser from the top, not the bottom, that way the gas can stay on top and as it cools into liquid and the liquid gets pushed to the bottom. And then the liquid enters the expansion valve and the evaporator from the bottom, not the top as you pictured it, that way as it warms up turns into gas the gas can escape from the top leaving most of the liquid on the bottom of the coil

Do expansion valves "unload" the compressor by shutting down refrigerant flow under low load conditions? All the high SEER conditioners have them, but I'm trying to understand why an expansion valve is better than a fixed orifice metering device.

M having problem in this type of eev. In stopped unit eev are internal leaking which cause sweating on panel body. Even after replacing whole expansion valve still same issue. It's a vrf system where some indoors are working and those stopped are getting dew on the panel grill body

Does anyone know of an electronic expansion valve that is made for ultra low temperature Chillers? I used a Sporlan but the superheat controller would fault out if my suction pressure drop below zero PSI or if my suction line temperature dropped below -59 degrees F. After it faulted the expansion valve would close completely when I ran the controller in manual mode I was able to fine-tune the EEV to 25% open and was able to achieve -85 degree fluid temp

Regarding TXV's: At Time 6:15, Did you mean to say that as superheat increases the valve is closed and vice-versa? This seems to contradict what I am learning in school.

he told them in reverse. the valve will open up if the superheat increases.

If you look at the animation, the pin in being pushed down which would open the valve to let more refrigerant in. I've accidently said it closes the valve. Apologies for the confusion. Correction will be included in the video description.

@@EngineeringMindset I always learn an incredible amount from your videos! I learned how TXV's work watching one of your previous videos! I thought you had misspoken. Not being snarky. I'm still on pretty shaky ground regarding HVAC thus my question. Thanks for being much cleared than my college instructors (let's keep that between us!)😉

ive seen alot of termostatic expansion valves that have failed as an hvac technician but never have i seen an EEV to this day fail

​@@Boraxo weird we work mostly with mitsubish heat pumps and never hade to replace an EEV although reversing valves have had a lot of problems

In 6:21, why the valve closes when the refrigerant expand which means the refrigerant in evaporator outlet is hotter and cooling load increase?

he made a mistake. the diaphragm will be pushed down which will open up the valve more and let more refrigerant into the evaporator.

3:11 Bike pump gets hotter as it compresses air to force into the tyre...... Good job it does really - as otherwise your car engine wouldn't work.

Why not use a fixed size expansion valve with a variable speed compressor? BLDC / PMSM motors with controllers are almost commodities at this stage and can offer greater efficiency than traditional induction motors.

I have been destroyed and open this E,E,V,. Then i sow how it works, open close small hole by an elctronic motor controlled by mother bord with sensors and i changed it by cappilpery tube and deleted the elctronic board,cause its impossible to diagnostic.
