I've used the brand new M2 MacBook Pro 14 for 4 months straight now. What originally came across as a fairly boring update totally took over and really surprised me to become my main computer all this time later.

I confirm everything. I bought the base M2 Pro (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) with the intention of trying and returning it if I wasn't satisfied. Never a little hesitation, very reactive and quick in everything. I edit 4k, 6k blackmagic raw like butter, I export 5 min 4k in prores 422 in 50 seconds, much faster than the 14 M1 Pro with which I worked for a year in the agency (I wonder how it is possible that channels like Max Tech has got the same results of M1 Pro!). It's a monster of power, with a perfectly optimized chip.

My experience with the M1 16" was fantastic, but I made some mistakes when I bought it. I am not one of those people that returns gear easily and so I kept it, was really happy with but the lack of RAM started to show. By luck I sold it to an acquaintance and I had a good idea of what I needed next. Purchased it from the Apple refurb store and it has been in my hands for over two weeks. I have it all setup and the change from the M1 to the M2 Max is so incredible. I went for the 14" this time, I miss the larger screen here and there, but I am getting used to it.

I love the 14/16 MBP because I can use it on my lap without getting burned or even uncomfortable. I get about 7 hours of battery with my production stuff on my M1 Pro MacBook Pro 1/32. It would be nice to get 10 or more. I get about 12 with casual use. I'm going to see what the M3 looks like when it comes out. For now, I can just bring a spare battery pack.

I'm totally in love with the 14m2 base (10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD). I found the NEW base M2 pro for €200 more than the refurbished m1 pro and 500€ less than Apple site! I was coming from an intel 2017, so I had to choose between m1 pro and m2 pro. I was initially influenced by the various negative reviews, then i realized that which made no sense to me. The slower SSD compared to the previous model is not a tragedy, both because it is still very fast and responsive, and because the faster speed of the previous model would ONLY be noticed if you transferring a very huge amounts of data to an external SSD (or from an external SSD) that was faster than the internal SSD... which NEVER happens! On the other hand, performances has definitely improved. I did a final cut export test using m1 pro 14" 10 core and m2 14" 10 core. One hour and 36 minutes of video, 4K prores: masks and various effects applied. Export completed about 40 minutes with m1 pro (very good result) and 26 minutes with m2 pro (amazing result)! Maybe even better render times. For me nothing else is needed. The rest is just the bullshit.

Chris, have you noticed anything wonky with your M2 Pro MBP’s trackpad scrolling in certain apps (most noticeable for me it’s the Photos app)? When I scroll the velocity/momentum of the scroll is choppy and unpredictable. Sometimes it scrolls how you’d expect and then the next time I scroll it may move only two inches or half a page with the same level of scroll gesture. If I hook up my Magic Trackpad 2 to it then it scrolls just as I’m used to with an Apple trackpad. I went to Best Buy and saw the same thing on their demo unit. Safari seems to scroll fine, I used the MBP for almost a week without noticing the issue because I was doing a lot of Safari and DaVinci Resolve and then I started doing a bunch of pruning and editing in my Photo Library so I was scrolling a lot and it became very noticeable. I see it in Apple News as well.

All previous laptops felt like there was some kind of compromise here or there. I do a lot of photography and video editing, and the M1 Pro is the first one where I feel like it can handle whatever I need, and will do it quickly and quietly, even on battery. At $1699 from Apple Refurbished I really cant think of anything you can buy today that rivals the M2 MBP 14”. I will absolutely be rocking this thing very soon and may even finally retire my custom water-cooled PC build I put together back in 2013 as the MBP is about a thousand times more powerful despite being a laptop. Keep in mind I built the absolute best PC I could back in 2013 with a 4930K, Rampage IV Extreme, 32GB of DDR3 3133MHz, and TWO GTX Titans in a TJ11 case. All-in I spent about $7k on my PC with a custom loop and all EK blocks (CPU, GPU’s and even mobo) yet the MBP is so much more powerful in every single way (other than not being able to run some of my games). The only issue I’m struggling with in making my first switch to Mac is that I edit in Premiere and will have to learn Final Cut from scratch which will suck at first, but the power and convenience advantages out of this laptop are undeniable and at $1699 the value is actually really good as well! I will need to get a dock setup for use in the office (and my old 27” Korean IPS monitors with genuine 1440p Apple panels eons work since they’re D/L DVI) but I’ve needed to upgrade monitors for my editing for years anyway. I would LOVE to get two of the Studio Displays to hook up to the MBP as they look fantastic but those things cost as much as the laptop (EACH)! I dunno, we’ll see, but I cant wait to get my MBP in and start learning MacOS for the first time!

Gary, have you noticed with the 14” M2 Pro MBP that the trackpad doesn’t scroll as smoothly in apps like Photos or News? Mine scrolls fine in Safari, but I noticed with lots of scrolling, in Photos for instance, it will be choppy like it has velocity and then I scroll again and it loses velocity or stops. It’s just inconsistent. I hook an external Magic Trackpad to it and it works fine. Went to Best Buy and saw the same on their demo unit.

Thank you so much for this review. I have been going crazy looking at M1 vs M2 pro for over a month now, going between multiple sites: back market, Amazon renewed, apple refurbished, and while yes I can get a good deal off of the first two, I’m worried of too many things going wrong and would rather get it off of the apple certified refurbished store. A lot of people, forums, reviews, KZfaqrs are all saying save and get the M1 Pro, especially because of the SSD speed issue which personally I won’t care about because I’m getting the 1TB model anyways (regardless of current vs last gen.) But that struggle of deciding between M1 pro being listed at $2.4k and M2 pro at $2.6k on the apple refurbished store has been driving me nuts. Literal $150-$200 difference is not that big of a deal to me and I think after final video on this long winded debate, I will just get the newer model and save myself the headache. I haven’t owned either of these machines before, let alone a MacBook by itself, and I’m coming from an 11.5 inch surface pro. I think the 14 will be perfect for me and big enough as opposed to the giant 16 inch model, and if for whatever reason I decide to change my mind, I’ll save that for next generation. It sounds perfect to handle the workload I will eventually be doing as my skills develop over the next few months to a year, coding, photo and video editing as a new KZfaqr, app and game development, etc. Thanks again for this review and helping me finally make my decision. Really appreciate the honesty.

Also, I understand the 16 inch model has much more screen real estate and better battery, but I really won’t care too much about that especially since I will be taking this to school most likely, work, and just in general for travel. Also, as I stated above coming from an 11.5 inch screen, 14 will be a massive improvement in and of itself. I can only imagine what a 16 will look like but I will save that for another year if I decide to jump in screen size. I used the AR to view both of them in real time compared to the surface pro I’ve been using and holy shit are BOTH of them so much bigger in comparison. I can’t imagine lugging around a 5 pound, 16 inches of screen right now nor do I want to 😅 14 definitely has my vote this time around. But who knows, that may change.

I have the 14" M1 Pro Base model, but running into issues. Didn't think I needed Windows any more and could do everything on ARM version and Linux Arm versions. Well Somethings just don't work with the tools I have to use. Ended up getting a machine just to run VM's, but on the go I'm kinda limited. I have thought about down grading to a 16" MacBook Pro with intel... Anyone else run into this issue?

@paulrodriguez20 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, for engineering, Macs are a no go. A lot of programs don't run well although that will likely change in the future. Intel Macs are just fine. You can find fantastic deals on them and they perform just fine. The only big issue is that they get really hot and the fans get loud. But the raw power is good enough for almost anything. If you need more power than that, I would switch to a gaming laptop that can handle the heat and workload. But overall, Intel Macs are not that bad. Just know that they are not as good as M1 and M2

Currently using a 2020 M1 Macbook Air w/ 16GB ram and 500GB storage - Right now I am looking at this exact macbook pro but with 1TB for storage - My final cut pro crashes when under hevayb intense use, and I am really hoping this would solve that issue, along with my lack of internal storage. I will also be coding soon, so I want absolutely nothing holding me back.

Hi Gary. I really want the MacBook Pro 16. I only want the 16, due to the screen size. Always had the 13inch version, and I just want the biggest. It won't hamper me in daily traveling between home and office. Honestly, M1 or M2. Kindly note I'm from South Africa, so that limits me to Apple merchandise. I will really appreciate your feedback!

Thank you for this video. Your content is very helpful and accessible. I appreciate that. I'm still working on an Intel Mac, but I'm getting ready to upgrade. Not an easy choice. I record music on Logic. No symphonies, so I'm not talking 100 tracks. I also edit videos for KZfaq (music videos). I'll be adding a wrinkle, which is 2D and possibly a limited amount of 3D animation to the videos, mixed in with actual footage. That's what makes the computer decision hard. I'm not going to be doing motion picture level animation. It'll be low poly backgrounds and characters. I don't want to be underpowered, but I don't want to spend a lot more than I need to. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm looking at everything from a MacBook Pro (14 or 16" - 32GB) to a Mac Mini Pro (32GB) to a Mac Studio base model. Probably do a 1TB HD no matter which I get, and do some external storage for virtual instruments and project files I'm not currently working on. Thanks for any suggestions.

Question is: can you afford to TRY? Maybe BORROW/LEASE M1 Air just to get hang of it, or baseline M2 PRO 14". Or M2 mini. Or just buy M2 mini, see how it works for you, sell for 3/4 of price and then buy final machine. If you manage on Intel, than any upgrade - assuming your software is done for Apple Silicon and ports are available - will be ground breaking.

@@BinskAndSmackers I have thought about doing that but then it creeps towards the price of the M1 Pro refurbished. The M2 with the upgraded CPU and GPU is around 1350 and the refurbished M1 Pro is about 1550. I used to bash on Macbooks so hard. They just seemed overpriced compared to a Windows laptop. The M1 ended that completely and I've jumped to the other side of the Apple fence. I haven't even turned my Windows desktop on for a couple of months. The MBPs and even the Airs are just too good. Powerful, beautiful, silent, and with fantastic battery life. There simply is no competition for them right now. Apple bought these devices from the future. I still have some complaints about MacOS, such as why a basic window management tool like Magnet isn't included out of the box. I don't know what's going on there. Still, I couldn't recommend a high-end Windows laptop to anyone right now. A budget device? Sure. If you've only got $500 you're not going to get any sort of M1 or M2 Mac and you might as well get the best Windows or Linux device you can (or a Chromebook if that suits your needs.) But if you're going to drop $800 or more, go with a Mac. Get a used Air if you have to. There is just no comparison to other devices, at least not in 2023.
