06:30 Similar thinking, with some of the Korean kingdoms, some of the closest bodyguards for the king were drawn from Jurchens, notably, sons of the tribal chieftains, sometimes given Korean nationality, a rank in the Korean military. King was always in competition with the Korean nobles. He needed someone he could depend on.

Race is such a complicated topic but good of you to cover it. Not that I would know but I'm sure it was a headache for the Romans to figure out who was who in the massive empire.

@@TheFallofRome all one needs! The issues of artwork and representation remind me quite a bit about the dynamics of ethnic identity and in (pre-Greco/Roman) Egypt, where there was this complex dance between depicting assimilated foreigners as as "Egyptian" in some contexts and "not" in others. So, you may have the same person portrayed very differently in two different pieces. Gets even more messy because of the direct cultural and personal exchange between Egypt and neighboring regions - the adoption of hairstyles and wigs from Nubia, the influx of peoples from Libya, and so on. On a separate but related note, how much do we know about movement from city to city? If I'm in Alexandria, how likely am I to move to Carthago Nova? Syene? Antioch? Rome?

@@hiddenhist yeah we’ll be talking about the art when I upload the videos on Egypt. To answer your question, I don’t know off the top of my head but a quick google turned up this paper that might be of interest www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4749291/

I feel like there’s a theme here. That being that much like todays concepts of whiteness and blackness Roman and non Roman was a social/political tool that could be expanded or contracted to suit whatever situation the current power base needed
@TheFallofRome

Absolutely! It’s a theme that’s going to run through all fifteen videos

I thought Roman economy was based on slavery. I've seen a lot of estimates much higher than 10 % of population. Usually around 25 %.
