Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery Niiice! I bought my 1976 R (just like this one) in 1990. She had 2.25 MILLION miles on her, but had just gotten a new 350 cid MACK long block, and 5 speed MACK tranny. New paint, bushings all around, tires, and I put another 2,5 million miles on her, running AMSOIL 20-50w, and changing the filters every 15K, and the oil at 100K (56 gallon MACK oil pan, btw) Never broke down once. 2 turbo units, 1 air compressor, 600 or so tires & drum breaks, over the years. When hauled for construction companies I ran a Mack just yours though it was a 5 speed. Rolled coal like a boss only went 55 mph. Hope it serves you well.

Beautiful! You won’t find a more reliable truck. My 1985 R model works everyday hauling gravel and sand for a living and hauls grain on my farm and others in the fall

If you want to get throught the gears even faster, upshift with the dynatard on. I used to listen to my dad's drivers leave our shop and they would change a gear about every 1.5 to 2 seconds (in the lower gears, at least). No clutch either, just for starting in first, low (or low, low I think they used to call it.) The dynatard would drop the engine speed much faster and allow an upshift without the clutch to happen much quicker. They got paid by the load and my dad would fire them if they were speeding (they all had tach cards) so they found others ways to make time. All he ever owned were R600's. Watching the race reminded me of a story my two uncles (my dad's younger brothers) told me. Back in the mid 1970's they had ordered two identical Macks from the factory and had to drive them from the dealer back home (about 500 miles). They were racing each other during the trip back and they said the trucks would be going exactly the same speed, side by side. Eventually one would start to pull ahead slightly and then stop pulling ahead, then the one in the back would start to pull ahead slightly and then stop pulling ahead. Eventually they figured out what was going on. In those days Mack had thermostat controlled radiator shutters on the front of the rad (you could see them when looking at the front of the truck). My uncle in the lead truck noticed the radiator shutters would open on the other truck and it would start to creep ahead until they shut again. It turned out that a slight change in drag caused by the radiator shutters affected the top speed. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Ken

Great video You captured the thrill a Mack can bring! I worked and drove R models and always found the a joy to maintain as a mechanic and fun to drive.

Awesome find!!! Picked me up a 82 R model with Winch. Did the same drove it home. Took couple of days but was fun!

I've always loved those old Macks but you're starting to make me a super fan! Everyone needs to road trip in an oldie sometime. I did last fall before harvest. Took my '79 Chevy pickup 4500 miles through Montana and Wyoming mountains. Never forget that trip. Only breakdown I had was the cd player quit! Another great video and it looks like that you all had a great time on the trip . That is a good looking older Mack . One of my friends has a late 80's red Mack straight truck with a log loader on it, that he hauls log with and hauls his 2 dozers on. I think that he bought it in the early 90's and has been hauling logs ever since to this day, most of the time 5 days a week . And that has been the toughest truck, it goes like a bulldozer in the mud . And a lot of the loads of logs come down backwoods roads from the tops of some of these Eastern Kentucky hills . I drove a 82 R model with 65k rears. It gave your back a real beating. But I still have a soft spot in my heart for those old Macks

Back when they were new we ran about 20 R models hauling our oil tankers. Still have 5 of them absolute beasts. Those trucks were built to last love driving the R models in the parades

In 1988, my boss bought a new R model. had a 350, with a Mack 9 speed, 4.17 rears. Supposed to have been governed at 1950 rpm, but the day it left the dealer, I hit 2300 every gear, even 9th. It would fly, and would outpull 400 Cats and Cummins. loved that truck

I drive a 38-year-old R Model. I work for a farmer. We haul pumpkins, grain, and hay. The truck has 582000 original miles. It has a 300 with a 5 speed. The farmers have own he truck since1991. Good old trucks

I think that because of a old Mack dump truck that was that body style I think that possibly that is also my favorite Mack body style. Thank you Grayce for this fun little video with Kevin. Hmm... interior restoration is in order if only to clear it up, and new main mirrors too... exterior... just clean up those rims, possibly the farm logo on the doors... engine, suspension and drivetrain... a definite checkup. Great purchase, should be a great asset on the farm. PS: get a lowboy trailer for the farm equipment and a grain trailer too. Oh and air ride seats for that fine tush, too!

I had 6 RD 686 model Mack's when I was in the Army. They were used for Hauling Tanks down range with an 8spd top side and a 4spd reduction 3 had BC3 Cummins and 3 had the 11.1 Maxi-Dyne which leaked like crazy and rolled coal like a freight train but could out lug the Cummins all day.🤣🤣

Great truck!! I purchased a hot rod via the net...no inspection, just pictures & a phone call. Before anyone jumps on the ....'you should have personally cked it out' negativity train....the owner trailered it to my frt door. I had the opportunity to drive it and ck all the build sheets before handing him the ck.

One of my first jobs I had after I got my commercial license was in an old twin screw Model R asphalt truck with 750,000 miles on it. That thing was indestructible!

Did LTL with Mack 300 with a 5 speed. Stiil love the sound of that huge turbo spinning up. Didn't think that a truck with just 5 gears was a good idea until i pulled a full trailer of freight and that combo really surprised me. Pulled anything we could stuff in the trailer like it was empty. Not real fast but it could pull even up long hills with ease.

Carbondale huh? Must’ve been McBride Mack, y’all were in my neck of the woods. My ex brother in law used work for Charlie McBride as a mechanic. Got my CDL in a 70’s R model Econodyne and put some miles on haulin coal,grain and asphalt. They’re definitely reliable iron. Great video and good luck with your new workhorse.

Mack, good truck although in 30+ years of driving truck, I never got to drive an R model, drove an 86 cabover, can't remember what the model was but it was the smoothest riding cabover I ever drove, everything else was either International, Freightliner, Kenworth or Peterbilt. Good video!

The tanker trailers look like the liquid sludge/manure trailers I used to pull with a ‘68 R model when I worked for Milstone Sod Farm. Which was also the truck I got my commercial license with back in ‘81. I pulled their 40’ walking beam spread axle flatbed for my drivers test at Bakers Basin, Trenton NJ. Back then the commercial license in Jersey was called an articulated license‼️. I had to parallel park with it just like you do with a car ‼️ I passed with flying colors.

ran one like that in the oilpatch years ago; 300 HP Mack engine, 6-speeds (5 on the main, granny & reverse on the auxiliary), no lockers, just a power divider... rode like a tank, but it had torque up the wazoo...

I drove early 80s R model with Mack 5 speed manual transmission pulling a 9000 gallon petroleum tanker. I loved my BULLDOG! He was good for me and I miss him. Be good to yours and he be good to you.

Usually cars with air brakes have also compressed air outlet, so if you have air hose and compression gauge, it's possible to check and pump on the side of the road, even after every 15 minutes if needed.

That tanker trailer you questioned about looks like maybe it was used to haul saltwater in the oil field. If you were close by an oil field pretty sure that's what it's for. About 130 bbl tanker.

had an '89 R Model (white like yours) from 95-98, single axle 250 5 speed pulling dump wagon. Reliable work truck. Great to see an old R model still on the road. Did you get 2, as this is a different truck from the other video? Fuel tanks are different (black steel vs. aluminum) and air horn is different (single low note vs. 2 higher pitched ones). Take care.

They are vac trailers, used to haul fuids in the oil field

These look so good as cement Trucks with the wide steers on the front axle.

Those trucks are good old trucks and seem to run forever and we got a couple here and they beat u to death but other wise don't have any major issues with them

Most of the time the quick release air fitting on the air hose will work if you don't have an air chuck

Those trailers that said Barnett well services I used to load out with fresh water or production water. Those trailers come out of cresson Texas

Drove a newer model Mack for OTR freight. Took a month before I learned how to work the windshield wiper fluid pump. It was a rubber squeeze pump on the bottom of the wiper speed switch. Weirdest windshield wiper design ever. Other than that it was a nightmare to chase down all the air leaks from the air lines. That happens to all makes and models.

Those are “hydro vac” trailers Used to suck up “produced water” from oil wells or for hydro excavation, or other stuff, same as the trucks that pump out your septic systems but bigger
