Thank you for being clear on this point. So many priests tell us that if you are not aware of having committed mortal sin, then you are in the state of grace (assuming one is baptized, etc.) Lately I have been seeing that this is not enough because there are factors like culpable ignorance and negligence. I saw a poster on the 9 ways to participate in another person’s sin. This has provided plenty of food for thought. Here’s an example that may hit hard for many. How many people gossip? How often does this gossip involve slander and detraction? How many Catholics know that the Church teaches these are generally mortal sins except in certain circumstances? How many Catholics know that it could be just as gravely sinful to listen to these things as to speak them? If you don’t know that because you have neglected to inform yourself on Catholic teachings, whose fault is that? Ignorance does not always diminish culpability; deliberate ignorance increases culpability (CCC 1859-1860). I must admit that I have a hard time hearing the voice of conscience in the midst of social interactions, but this improves with effort. How many communities are there in which we never speak ill of others? How many things do we do or neglect to do because we are too lazy to think, or too hesitant to act? It can be very hard to judge these matters. At the same time, Fr. very rightly points out that we must decide, as best we can, whether we are in a state of grace in order to receive Communion. We must not get hung up on scruples.

I respectfully think this needs some clarification. The Church teaches that a good act of contrition alone generally does not move one out of a state of mortal sin and into a state of grace. Without first receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation it would usually require an act of perfect contrition which is extraordinary.
@seancor9855

Father said this exact thing. Saying the Ave, and the Act of contrition, how I heard it, was to move your heart in repentance. Repent, turn away, and go to confession. I heard it as a way of showing God, that you are Sorrowful. Like sending flowers to your beloved, before you tell her you are truly sorry. Especially if what you did affected the relationship. The difference being your relationship with your beloved might be injured permanently, even after saying sorry. But with God it’s forgiven, and the relationship is healed. That’s how I understood it.

God's word is not restricted to the Holy Bible. Not all of God's revelation is given in the text. St. Paul said we should hold fast to the traditions, scripture (old testament) and word of mouth teaching-- this includes the doctrine of state of grace. Use common sense. Humans are equipped by God to use their intelligence. If you're doing and living how Christ our Lord commands then what should this be called? The answer is being in a "state of grace". Everything in life has a name, right? Well living according to the Holy Gospels has a name which is called state of grace. I simplified it for you. I hope this helps you. God bless.

Right, the grace to do good and abide by Christ's laws but if you're not doing that yet only claiming you have faith then that is not enough. You need faith and the grace of good works to be saved. You can't have one and not the other. Be careful with that faith alone teaching.

Thank you for your question. Sanctifying grace is the principle of supernatural life, just as the soul is the principle of natural life. That is, just as only living persons, with their souls united to their bodies, are capable of actions in the natural realm, only persons in the state of sanctifying grace are capable of performing supernatural acts -- acts which are meritorious toward gaining the supernatural reward of Heaven. For those in the state of grace, even natural acts such as our daily duties in this life are rendered supernaturally meritorious when offered to God as acts of love and obedience to His will. God bless you.

Thank you for this important question. When we receive the Sacrament of Penance, it is necessary to confess all mortal sins. By concealing a serious sin in the Sacrament, one would commit another serious sin (of sacrilege), and even those sins which were confessed would not be forgiven. But to forget a serious sin is a different matter. If we prepare to receive the Sacrament by making a sincere effort to recall all sins committed since our last worthy Confession, and we bring to the Sacrament a "universal" contrition taking in any and every offence against God, then all of our sins are forgiven through the priest's absolution -- including even any sins which were forgotten. But if later we recall such sins, we have a grave obligation to mention them in our next Confession. In the meantime, there is no need to worry about the state of our soul or to abstain from receiving Holy Communion until the next opportunity for Confession because the now-remembered sin is already forgiven. God bless you.

After a serious effort to remember all serious sins, and exciting sorrow for them all, and plainly confessing all that you can remember, do not worry if you remember some more sins later. So, if I understand what is being presented here, the Catholic Church rejects the truth that Jesus is the Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world? Is that what I should take away from this? And how is it that being baptized in water restores the Spirit of Life that was lost when Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden? How would Adam lose the Holy Spirit that was breathed into him upon his creation if the sin he committed was violation of a dietary law? I thought that the church views dietary laws as ceremonial laws that we are not bound to. Wouldn’t that be a venial sin, at best? I always thought that faith comes by hearing. How can we know for sure that an infant who is baptized understands the words being spoken over them to come to faith? If it was faith that restored the Holy Spirit to Cornelius in Acts 10 and it came without being baptized in water, why is water baptism of any concern? This makes no sense to me.
@TheFatimaCenter
@TheFatimaCenter 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for your questions. That Adam's sin was a grievous crime putting the whole human race (of which he was the head) at enmity with God, is clear from Romans 5:12, "Wherefore as by one man sin entered into this world, and by sin death; and so death passed upon all men, in whom all have sinned." By Our Lord's own institution, the Sacrament of Baptism replaced the Old Covenant rite of circumcision by which infants were incorporated into the ecclesia of the True Faith and regenerated into the life of sanctifying grace. For adults, this translation into the state of grace (called Justification) is likely to occur before the conferral of the Sacrament, for which reason catechumens are typically received into the Church at once each year at Eastertime. For these, the Sacrament is a necessity of precept, not of means. For infants, however, since they cannot yet elicit an act of faith, the Sacrament is a necessity of means for salvation, and Baptisms are performed within days of birth -- or immediately when there is danger of death. The Church's teachings of the process of Justification are fully explained in the documents of the Council of Trent. (See the Sixth Session.) We urge you to continue your investigation of the Catholic Faith. God bless you. www.papalencyclicals.net/councils/trent.htm

@@TheFatimaCenter Greetings Father and thank you for your response, however you didn’t really address my concerns. I personally do not see Christ as instituting any of the sacraments that you referred to. Water baptism was instituted by the Pharisees as a means of converting a Gentile. John the Baptist used their religious rite in order to identify the Christ. Jesus did not institute communion at the last supper. He and His disciples were observing Passover and Passover was an observance to remember the Israelites freedom from slavery in Egypt. Jesus did shift the focus of the remembrance to what He would do for all of humanity through His death burial and resurrection. And in regard to sin, what I see in scripture is that the wages of sin is death. Why did the church change that to, ‘the wages of sin is apology? This makes no sense to me personally. How do we reconcile these apparent conflicts? God bless.

No, Father, with all due respect, Grace is NOT given to us 'through' prayer: that would imply that Grace is somehow 'merited'. If we have to work to receive Grace, then Grace is not GRATUITOUS - and therefore not Grace at all. I have spent 25 years laboring under this false assumption and made NO progress in my spiritual life whatsoever. And then I discovered Augustinianism! Grace, being a 'Participation in the LIFE of God', it is, IN AND OF ITSELF, efficacious. The word 'Actual' does not mean 'in the moment' but 'pertaining to the ACT' which is being performed BY THE HOLY GHOST within us when our will is '(conformed) to His good will' - Philippians 2:13. The distinction between 'Actual' Grace and 'Sanctifying' Grace is nowhere to be found in saint Thomas - who speaks of 'Operating' Grace and 'Cooperating' Grace instead - and, as far as I can tell, it is an invention of the Jesuits (Suarez, Bellarmine, Aquaviva et alii) in the late XVIth and early XVIIth centuries to accommodate 'Molinism' and 'Congruism', both ill-advised and unnecessary attempts of over-zealous scholastic theologians to reconcile the mysteries of Grace and Predestination. In the end, Sanctifying Grace is the wellspring whence the LIFE of God is poured out into the world - i.e., into our souls. When God dwells within us, He doesn't just sit there: being ALIVE, He ACTS and SANCTIFIES us, as it were - hence the name 'Sanctifying' Grace - IF WE LET HIM. The only thing required of us is that we say 'FIAT' to the action of the Holy Spirit within us - like the Blessed Virgin Mary - and thus be made ever more Holy in the likeness of God - BY GOD HIMSELF. Such is the wondrous doctrine of EFFICACIOUS Grace - and our world desperately needs to hear it, Father.

The doctrine to which you are referring is espoused by Protestants...not Catholics.
@superapex2128
@superapex2128 9 ай бұрын
@@242abigail You are sadly mistaken... Protestants deny the need for works... Augustinianism, as understood at the 2nd Council of Orange, affirms that God is the primary agent of our Sanctification. We DO play a part in our Sanctification - but it is God who does the "heavy lifting": we merely give our "Fiat" - our assent - to it. This is VERY good news for those who truly want to save their soul in a world as corrupt as ours... Think it over - it really changes everything.

So… St. Thomas Aquinas actually DOES talk at length about Sanctifying Grace. And if you actually read Augustine (not just very select parts taken out of context) you would plainly see that he (Augustine) in his writings “On Christian Doctrine” shows that there are different graces which have no qualms with Aquinas. You have thrown down many great names in Christ, but nothing sited. THE SUMMA CONTRA GENTILES
OF
SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS Chapter CL Since, then, according to what we have been saying, sanctifying grace denotes God's special love for man, it must in consequence imply the presence of some special goodness and perfection in man. Just for one of many examples.

@@geoffwilson9273 I think you're missing the point I'm trying to make: Grace is, IN AND OF ITSELF, efficacious. That's what has been denied ever since the Renaissance and this is MUCH more important than being 100% accurate when it comes to citations - I wish you would understand that. I don't claim to have read all of saint Thomas - or saint Augustine, for that matter - but that's beside the point: from a practical perspective, it really doesn't matter. My goal is not to know everything and read everything - that's impossible. My goal is to become a better person. But I do thank you for correcting me. Does saint Thomas write about Actual Grace in the sense of 'in the moment' in Contra Gentiles?
@geoffwilson9273
@geoffwilson9273 9 ай бұрын
@@superapex2128 To get this straight, you believe that if grace is bestowed upon you, that is it instantly efficacious whether you cooperate with the grace or not…? Now, if this is your assumption, then St. Thomas definitely counters this as an error. This is most easily manifest in the Grace of conversion, if a person rejects the grace (usually by attachment to sin, created things), he is not converted. If he cooperates with the grace, he is converted, but conversion is not synonymous with sanctification since in Holy Scripture it is written,”21 Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Here we see plainly that action is required, to do the Will of God. From here we see again “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength.” Again action is required. “And to Love one’s neighbours as one’s self.” From the first commandment we can deduce that we must follow this commandment for the Love of God. Since all good things come from God as He is Goodness itself, Love comes from God, and if we Love God, it is because we are cooperating in His Grace.
