The respect and gratitude towards Mr. Ilayaraja even after 25 years is mesmerising. Talking about his approach and instinct, a fine gentleman indeed.

I started watching this for Mani Sir, but ended up becoming a big fan of Baradwaj Rangan. His clarity of questions and the way he kindles Mani Sir to talk is truly amazing. I've read his book on Mani Sir before (a huge fan of that) but this is the first time I am putting a face to Mr. Rangana dn seeing first hand the way he talks and articulates his questions. Hats off!

The camera is not static in the interview, it is moving at a really slow pace that it's soothing like a teacher walking around the class while teaching.

This is a great interview. Even as a viewer and not necessarily a filmmaker, there was so much to learn. But then again, it needed Baradwaj Rangan to bring it out of Mani sir

Mr. Mani Ratnam has always been my favorite Indian director and I truly appreciate this interview, It was clear that you admired him and your questions reflected that. It was a true delight because you brought out the core of what he is (or so it seemed like). That question about Iruvar was just so insightlful and made me go back and watch the scene! Thank you for this interview! Now can you do one with Mohanlal please? :-)

Great end to 3 part series! Mani sir is just a gentleman through and through. Not once did he call his movies with words like "product" or "investor" just pure passion of the arts brimming with perseverance :-)

I have already read conversations with Mani Ratnam and that was when I fell in love with the director's film making style but to draw out such crisp answers from Mani sir, the questions posed by Brangan sir went a long way in getting the best pointed and articulated ones. Really happy that Brangan sir is into more interviews space apart from blog reviews :)

More disturbing to see a copycat director get so much respect and love. The true hero of Mani Ratnam movies are Illayaraja and Rahman. Take them away and u are left with poorly remade movies except Alaypayuthe which was a good remake.

FC, Mr. Rangan, I just cannot thank you all enough for this amazing video series! Mani ratnam has been the lens through which my whole generation looked at films. To get such in-depth feedback just makes it that much more special to go back and watch thalapathi, iruvar, alaipayuthey, etc. Simply too good!
@MrSutharsan2
@MrSutharsan2 7 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah yeah... I am now going to watch Thalapathi, Bombay and Alaipayuthey after this. I wish I can give Kaatru Veliyidai another chance soon (when the DVD comes out - I was very harsh on it first viewing in theatre). Obviously I give Mani Sir a few more chances than others because I know his films impact me mostly on 2nd or 3rd viewing (I am not saying its what others should do - its what I do and it works for me always).

Watching it today and still feeling fresh.. One thing that I would like to know is how much does the offscreen personality of an actor or a technician affect Mani Sir's decision to associate with that person. Coz many a times I have felt some common traits in most of the constants in his team - class, a kind of submission to the craft, unique style, swag, minimalism..

Really interesting interview, all three parts have been a great watch. I bought the book and have read it a few times as I've been fascinated by Mani Ratnam's movies since watching Iruvar around 5 years ago. Since then I have located and watched as many movies of his as I can, providing I can find subtitled versions as I do not understand Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or Kannada. So this has been a fantastic interview to watch!

Hi. Hope this finds you well. My name is Harish Gadappa. This is one of the finest interview series in terms of content that Film Companion has produced, I absolutely adore you guys, thats why I follow all your videos. I have a problem, I know this is a couple of year old video and I am sure, this video could have been produced much better technically. I have seen a pattern that the level of video quality even now, (the latest Rohit Shetty's interview) hasn't been upto the mark. There are DSLR cameras which produce amazing imageries and will not even pinch the pockets of the producer. Please do make sure, that you UP the level of quality with just not only content but also visually, it will be much more engaging to viewers, film students and filmmakers alike. Honest Feedback. Much thanks.

Thank Bharadwaj Rangan for the effort. I have a small request, There is no continuum in your discussions. Mani Ratnam sometimes comes up with some interesting observations to your questions, Instead of taking it to another level you disregard it and goes back to refer your notepad to ask the next question. It gives a feeling that nothing new is being said.(other than What you have already written in the Book.)

Such a choosy and apt atmosphere to interview the maverick filmmaker. Would have been better if they'd run the best scenes of Mani Ratnam in the screen rather than just repeating the same tease of Katru Veliyaadai all the interview.

Great interview compared to the other Tamil entertainment journos who always ask the most mundane questions. However was expecting the million dollar question: what happened between MR and IR after Thalapathi that MR went looking for someone else?

Urbanite Urbanizer Mani would give a diplomatic answer and cover the truth,I'm basing this according to his previous interviews.
@MrSutharsan2
@MrSutharsan2 7 жыл бұрын
More than Mani, the best possible chance of getting that info out would be from IR side or someone close to IR at that time who was party to the inside happenings. Some even rumor that the film "Poovellam Kaetuppar" (Surya-Jyothika) had a portion that dwelt on the fallout between MR and IR (of course with cinematic liberties like making the MD drunk and making him blurt things out which he would repent).

Thotta Tharani is a top achiever. Why does he always have to talk about what he did in the scene instead of speaking about Ilayaraja and Maniratnam, because the question must have been about them! Its as if he is saying that it was him that saved a scene or a song and not Maniratnam.
