A Lockheed F-104N Starfighter operated by NASA collides with an Air Force North American XB-70 Valkyrie over California's high desert near Edwards. Six years later, the second production Tupolev Tu-144, a supersonic passenger airliner, disintegrates and crashes at the Paris Air Show in front of 250,000 people.

RIP to Joe Walker, probably America's greatest test pilot during this era. To die in a corporate, promotional photoshoot for General Electric is almost incomprehensible when compared to the achievements of this X-15 test pilot. The F-104 was a beast of an airplane and a favorite of the era's fighter jocks who wanted to fly faster and higher. An F-104 equipped with an auxiliary rocket in its tail almost killed Chuck Yeager during a test of high altitude capabilities and the German Airforce had a miserable experience with the Starfighter losing well over 300 planes to operational accidents. It had to be respected and flown the way it was designed to fly or it killed you faster than its Mach numbers. Luftwaffe officers called it "The Widowmaker".
@JSFGuy
@JSFGuy 15 күн бұрын
True that, it was a widowmaker to more than just the Germans. Protocols were violated for the weekend promotional flight. He was not endorsed to be flying where he was. It's the complacency and overconfidence that will not forgive.

The reasons for the F-104's high loss rate in Luftwaffe hands are the miserable weather in Central Europe, and the fact that the Luftwaffe never flew any Mach-1 capable fighters before acquiring the F-104, having only flown Transonic fighters.

Wow, I’ve read many accounts of the Valkyrie crash and this is the first time I’ve heard about the B-58. Makes sense that Walker might lose position a little while searching for the bomber. You mixed up the captions for the F-4 and T-38, and it might have been helpful to note that the photoshoot was for a commercial for the manufacturer who made the engines for all the aircraft in the formation. But it’s a great video anyway.

My father was a design engineer on the program. He told us about the crash and I specifically heard that the GE photographer in the F-104 wanted to get close up pictures of the afterburner and kept prodding the pilot to approach closer, to which, the other pilots kept telling them to back off and stay away from the wake stream off the wing tips. Their attempt was to do a slow crossing sweep behind and above the engines for picture purposes. Never hear anything about striking a wing or loosing visual contact with the b-58.

I was hiking in the mountains just south of the crash site of the XB-70 that morning. I have pictures of the very large/tall colum of black smoke rising from that crash site. When Sinatra was performing in Las Vegas he sent the Lear to Palm Springs to pickup his mom and bring her to the show. On departure the pilots turned the wrong way comming out of Palm Springs and flew into the side of Mt San Gorgonio. They actually turned the wrong on the departure SID and turned NW and not SE, thus creating a smoking hole in the ground.

Why are you uploading the same stories? Atleast other aviation content creators cover other stories like Allec Joshua Ibay.

It’s very easy to sit behind a screen (most never having piloted anything that flies let alone an experimental supersonic jet) and watch some cheap graphics and hurl insults but what’s not considered or talked about is the Soviet proclivity for severe punishment for failure and the extreme desire by the communist leaders to outdo the West at all costs, I believe the Tupolev crew were victims of this ridiculous rivalry more so than of showboating - ultimately the captain is responsible for his aircraft but just like the “getthereitus” phenomenon has fatally affected crews in commercial aviation so too this rivalry pushed a crew and a not fully tested airframe to breaking point

Did the Soviet "Concord" look anything like the Anglo/French Concord by design or accident? Kind of like today's China's copying of American stealth fighters. Both the Soviets and China are/were really good at theft.

No, not an accident at all. I'm sure it was very much copied from smuggled trade secrets.
