I used to play in an orchestra and competitions 20 years ago but stopped playing ever since. I recently decided to start again. In my mind, I can still remember the way I was playing, but I am literally re-learning everything again like a complete beginner. Thanks for the advice.

Good to hear this. I played the flute as a child for 10 years and was pretty good. I attended Interlochen and was very competitive. Fast forward almost 25 years, I am getting back to playing again. Bought myself a Yamaha flute and sometimes playing can be defeating. I don't remember the fingering for the high B, and C let alone play them well. I am playing about 4hours a week and am joining a flute choir. I am hoping one day to get to where I was back in my glory days!

I needed this soooo badly right this moment! I recently picked up my flute after not playing for 31 years! The first thing I did was sign up for lessons because I knew I would just get frustrated and quit otherwise. I just picked mine back up after 22 years. I got the headaches that I use to get when I first started learning and I realized that my breath was gone lol. With consistent practice, it is all coming back.

Excellent video. After a 46 year hiatus (!) I picked up my flute again, Spring 2019. I was in a golden position at church with an outstanding pianist as an accompaniest and vibrant music program. After about 4 months of playing I began playing solos in front of 100+ people at church. In November 2019 I upgraded from my open holed Armstrong to an Azumi 3, Altus z cut head piece. Then COVID hit. Due to my age I stayed holed up in my home and played my flute for 14 months awaiting the vaccine. Every Sunday I'd make a video and post it on Facebook to cheer people up. I sent the conductor of one of our community bands my video and he asked me to join! Also, the videos enabled me to gauge my progress. Unfortunately, the great music program no longer exists at my former church, but I've joined a new church (for different reasons, really!) and soon will be playing solos and duets with the pianist...just waiting for Omicron to subside. Sorry for being verbose, but my point is this, you hit the nail on the head when you say not to limit yourself. I was a music major my first 1.5 years of college, then left music. It's GREAT to be back. Hope my comment inspires others.

#4 struck a chord with me. I’m 71, just had unbelievably successful open heart surgery 6 months ago. The last thing I remember before going under anesthesia was the surgical assistant telling me to remain positive through the process. Fast forward to 3 months ago, I’m picking-up my daughter’s flute from her high school band days to try to learn it. I’ve made strides in 3 months, although, by any measure, I still suck. But that’s to be expected. Next step is to find a good teacher to set me on the right path. I love these YT tutorials. Thank you for being there.

I’m just starting back after 25 years (I’m 43). We got this. I can’t wait to get back to it properly. I played constantly from age 5 to 18. Every day for hours. Got into a bad relationship then for a few years and stopped playing (confidence was gone and I thought I sounded awful and irritated everyone with my constant playing). Older and wiser now. Time to take it back. It’s the best therapy in the world. I used to play when I was really happy, sad, angry and loved pouring it all out. So excited to get back to the point where it just flows and I don’t have to think about it too much. And I live in the back of beyond so I can play as loud and long as I want 🥰

@@angelcakebaby1 Thanks for sharing your story! I'm sorry that you were made to feel that way and am SO happy you're in a better place and picking it back up again! I realized a long time ago that it was a therapeutic outlet for me and tried to pick it back up, but at the time I was so stuck in being mad/frustrated that I didn't sound as good as I used to that I stopped trying. Now I'm embracing the process of working through the mess to get back to good, and I'm really surprised by how quickly I've improve each day. I also get really excited when the muscle memory kicks in on things I don't actively remember! As you said, we got this!!

Haha, wish you would put this video out about 5 months ago. I played the flute in middle school for probably two or three years and then nothing.always carried my trusty Armstrong flute around with me everywhere I moved, and finally picked it up again this summer at 68 years old! I was super frustrated until I slowed down, relaxed, bought a beginners instruction book and several books and started watching the videos etc. Had to virtually learn some notes all over again, but it's been great to be able to play along with some of the backing tracks on line now. Thanks for your help!!

I am part of a little ensemble of recorder players. One of them has decided that since she's over seventy she'll never learn how to play an octave higher than the notes are written (she has an alto recorder). She's decided this is her limit. Of course this is nonsense, she isn't that limited, all it would take her is a little practice. But since she has decided she won't be able to do it, she can't. She is absolutely blocking herself. So, yes, Tatiana is absolutely right: Do not decide beforehand that you cannot learn something. What's somewhat annoying about it is that we often have to adjust the sheet music specially for her, rewriting the alto part. Just because she has decided not to be able to master that one thing. I am glad to see you back, Tatiana. I was getting worried.

Hi! I'm a new subscribie! I'm so pumped to have found your channel! I'm a flute lover who was a very active player through school and college... (I did play at Carnegie Hall with an honor band in college) Then life happened and I didn't have time. I GREATLY miss my flute and feel quite encouraged watching this video. Thanks :) 20+ years from “the good ole days” of reasonable proficiency and I need the reminder that this (restarting and continuing flute playing) is for fun and FOR ME (not for my private teacher, band director or any judge) and should be enjoyable. My fingers are quite defiant but the tone is still there - I’m ok with that - there are plenty of beautiful largo pieces out there and something I never did as a kid: MAKE IT UP. :)

This is just what I need to learn now...first learned the flute in grade 5 in elementary school and this lasted 3 years, then switched to baritone and later the sousaphone. Jump ahead 20 years and I bought a used flute to pick it back up but travel at work got really busy so this lasted about 18 months. Jump ahead again 30 years and now retired 3 days ago I bought a new Hunter flute and I’ve decided to do it right this time. Thanks for your videos!

I gave myself a six week break, over the course of Christmas and New Year's, got back to my first Flute practice yesterday, and had a really good practice. Yes, "giving yourself time to unwind" especially after this Covid-19 time was great for me.

This video realy encouraged me.i started lerning the flute at the age of49.not easy but a lot of fun.i am taking a break now for 7 month for another course i want to do. i will play at home and practice but stop the weekly lessons.hope to survive it and not loose what i have learned couse its pretious to me.💗 Your lessons and tips are great.thank you.

I never thought I'd buy a flute! In school it was a 2nd instrument, briefly. (I got knock knees, nervous on stage and gave up the thought, for 40+ yrs!). Bought my first flute recently, as a third instrument and there's no looking back. I can't tell you, how good for my all-in-all, this video is for me. Very special.

Thanks for the much needed encouragement. About the pup, they do have a little tendency to get a little cranky in their old age. About my old body, you can see from my picture I'm not exactly gorgeous as you are, I take it for what it's worth but well said about believing in yourself . My muramatsu flute I played my exams with and played in all my auditions and concerts got stolen a while ago. That’s been devastating. I am so happy that I could replace it this week and buy a new one, although the new one is just an intermediate modell, not a professional like the old one. But I am quite happy with it, and now I am going to restart very carefully and try not to push things too hard. Meanwhile I will try to save money to buy my dream flute in future. Great advice as an older flute player who took it back up with a certain passion about a year ago. Everything you are saying I learned the hard way. One other thing: If you have an old, tarnished beginners or intermediate flute, get a newer, nicer one! It helps!

Thanks for that advice! That is actually exactly what I am going to do. Hade a break for 8 years and I realised that my old wonderfull flute aren't in its best shape. Contacted a person who repairs flute but he said it was to much work and not worth it. Some parts needed to be replaced anyway and the flute had to many damages. I really long for a new flute and looking forward to check out which one who suits me.

Yes. I actually downgraded from my old, very fine, flute, but the technology has moved on and my new one is easier and stimulates me to play more often.

Great tips-thanks! It’s amazing that I make many of the same mistakes that I did when I first learned to play. For example, playing the easy parts faster than the harder parts. However, I am more thoughtful in how I use my practice time. Plus I record myself-often I sound quite different than I thought. BTW, I recognize the metronome on the table behind you! It’s terrific, and much better than anything I’ve found online. 🦋

I got a new flute last year for my birthday, I always used a loaned flute when I was in high school, it's been about 3 years. I was always nervous to play it again because I dreaded hearing how awful I've become, and yep, I sound terrible, my fingers hurt and there's spit everywhere (seriously why is there so much spit?? I would actually love an answer to this). This video definitely helped me feel better and I'm excited to see where I can go with this.

Thank you so much for this video. I played the flute since fourth grade all the way up to my second year of college. I dropped out and now have it played for three years. I was very discouraged at first because I used to be really good and now I’m kind of relearning I could play the flute fine, I just struggle with re-learning key signatures. Our bodies are always changing - 💯!!! I played in a band 6th-12th grade, then for a few little things for fun in college (a talent show, part of a skit, and a solo as part of the dance entertainment at an all-school dance), then only here and there just for fun at home since then (so fingerings and very basic embouchure stayed pretty solid, but most of the strength and nuances were more or less gone), but nothing official (hoping to maybe join our community band sometime next year, if I can manage to get the contact info for the director). I'm now accompanying a piece for our community choir's Christmas concert later this month (first time I've played flute with any kind of group at all since high school), and sure, my embouchure is weaker than it was in high school (to be expected after only playing very occasionally for the last 10 1/2 years), but my main challenge the last month and a half (other than solving the problem of my hands hurting so much after only about a minute of playing that I had to stop and take a long break - it wasn't due to lost strength in this particular case - but thankfully figured out a fix fairly early on) has been to figure out how to make my messed up jaw (from wisdom tooth surgery during college - it's stuck too far to the right) form an effective embouchure that still produces a decent sound - the concert isn't competition, so I know that it doesn't have to be anything close to perfect, but I still want to sound like I'm an at-least-somewhat-experienced player, not a beginner, especially because I played the exact same piece in high school, so it's not like it was brand new to me, and it's not very long, either. 6 weeks of practice later, and I'm finally figuring out how to nail some certain notes in certain intervals without the note splitting the octave, as well as finally consistently getting my fingers to all move at the same time when changing to certain notes (not always easy on my in-line because my joints don't always cooperate). Just a couple days ago, I finally started adding in a little vibrato (one of the very last things I learned in high school), which I wasn't comfortable doing until I had gotten the fingering switches and intonation where it needed to be. I still have a week and a half until the dress rehearsal and concert, so I'm feeling pretty good with the speed of my progress - I'm not trying to get back to where I was at the end of 12th grade in the next 10 days, just to where the tone is decent, and with no split fingerings (so to speak) or split octaves.

@@TheFlutePractice Well, it went well yesterday - no wrong notes, only one split fingering (and only just barely - couldn't hear it at all on the recording), and only one split octave (and at a point where the choir was really loud, so couldn't even hear it myself), and they were both due to nerves. In fact, it went so well that the choir director (when I asked her after the concert for the community band director's contact info) asked me if I was interested in playing for our local high school's musicals (they do one or two each semester) - I basically told her, "I haven't played with a group in over 10 years and I really miss it. So *_heck yes!!!"_* So yesterday's performance did in fact function as an audition of sorts, just like I had hoped.

Restarting the flute after long break. Last lesson was in 2013. Tone sound fluffy. Body was so tense and I know I was expecting to much.

SO....after 34 years in the Army I decided to play flute again....//wake-up/1 hour of physical training/ flute warm up and practice a couple of sessions a few hours a day = Lips were falling off = (1) guess I'm trying too hard // Mozart's Flute Concerto in G Major = cheeks hurt, lips falling off = (2) trying to go too fast too soon// an hour after dinner I warm up, practice the Mozart again, cheeks are really sore, lips are numb, fingers are sore as $!*% and before I hit the rack, clean the flute...toss and turn in my sleep from frustration = (3) I'm overdoing it// Taking Motrin for my sore fingers, cheeks and lips and have recurring bad dreams about how no one knows who I am because I offered to play at Carnegie Hall and they say, "you're who? Walt who?" (4) so yes, I have limiting beliefs about myself// Got on youtube and found/subscribed to your site (5) not doing it on my own...anymore..... seriously, I backed off and I'm playing better and I'm 3 notes away from improving my highest upper register A. B, and C!...I also play, Piccolo, my Grand piano, and guitar (sing)..was trained as a musician by my mother from age 5 to 18 (recitals, orchestra, marching band etc etc) and wanted to be a professional soldier and so I did...really love what you're doing to help so many with this wonderful instrument. Music has helped me so much in difficult times...I practice each of my instruments and voice daily during the week!...learning from your presentations, thanks so much!....and yes, as you've said, "the flute is so purty!"😊

Wow! What a transformation and I am so happy to hear it. It’s a wonderful thing to learn and instrument though counters much of what we are taught about hard work. We have to learn to work well, discover ease and let go. I had a teacher who said: learning an instrument is easy, it’s letting go of all the tension that is the hard part! Don't overdo it...uh, thank you. I pretty much have to step in it first to realize I've overdone it. So exiting to learn a familiar instrument more deeply than just winging it with jamming skills for 28 years. Bamboo with 6 holes plus embouchure hole was all I had until 2018. Was a good start. Metal is MUCH harder to control, especially with all the buttons!

6 weeks to 49, lion's mane fungus a great ally. I'm just re learning how to read music again since ignoring it in 1986 when I traded my clarinet for an electric bass and went into rock rebel stance until very recently. Flute discipline is up leveling all my intelligence, reading the little lines and dots as an intelligible map is a pleasure to put back together. I never understood the exact intervals in the harmonic sequence, up to 7 I've sounded from the low C base until I saw the printed notes in the Trevor Wye Tone book 1. Drone the tone, I'm still working on the first 2 pages, probably the most difficult. I can run around with so so tone, but droning the notes, playing the harmonics and learning to isolate them instead of just jamming in Blues circles where it doesn't matter what I do as long as it fits the vibe is revealing my limits, and improving my tone day by day. The improvements inspired me to go too far, and my muscles simply refused to relax into low notes, only able to do high until I put the flute down for a few hours, or put it away until tomorrow, massage my mouth, tap the muscles and bones that are strong from long years of martial arts conditioning, the Tai Ji kind that does it so slowly I didn't realize I was strong until about 8 years after I started to be that. Buzz my lips in low frequencies, and just rest, play guitar, sing if music is still calling. If I pay attention I can do just one round of one exercise in the Tone book, then have to rest for at least 20 minutes. Until I can do the first two pages without a rest I'm not moving on. Capricorn go! That being said, Gemini Moon; I make sure to just jam during part of my practice each day, trying things out. Then rest for hours until going for it again. Flute is so inspiring to me cause of how hard it is to get it really good. I like a challenge like that! Guitar is easy for me now, that was hard, at first. Voice, same. Flute is a level up in many ways.

when i try to get to the low key, i tend to hear myself in the throat ig because my lips are too tight

Try some singing and playing in that register. Your lips and your throat are probably getting in the way!

Oh my word! There are SOOO so soooo many in our community that have done this. Some after 40 years! You can come back and get so much joy out of it. I can only encourage it. "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is not true. They're just harder to motivate, but food works at all ages. It may even be easier for them to focus than it would be when training a younger dog
