Just to make sure... in brazilian portuguese, cobra means SNAKE. Any snake. A rattlesnake (cascavel) is a "cobra". the type of snake called COBRA in english, is called NAJA in portuguese.

@@TheFront It's actually even more interesting. The english word "COBRA", which denotes a SPECIFIC type of snake, actually comes from PORTUGUESE Cobra-Capelo, from old portuguese (from the time Portugal arrived in India with Magellans, etc) meaning Hair-Snake (because those things on the side of the species head reminded the portuguese explorers of a womans hair) Cobra comes from the ancient latin word COLUBRA. Meaning: snake. We also have the word SERPENT in portuguese, which also comes from ancient latin SERPENS. But it's quite interesting the english word COBRA which denotes a single species comes from the portuguese word COBRA which denotes ANY snake.

An interesting curiosity is that after occupying the Italian city (which I forgot the name, I think it is Montese) the Brazilians, despite having few supplies, shared their rations with the locals saving several people from starving. Even today they are seen as heroes and they have a yearly festival to celebrate the liberation. For a time several veterans had their travels paid to commemorate it in the city. Another curiosity is that Brazilian platoons were mixed (while other countries used to separate platoons by race). Several Italians thought that the few blacks in the FEB were white people wearing camouflage.

Fun fact: We do have BBC interviews wich show brazilian soldiers singing, making samba and bossa nova e even jokes. Fun fact 2: Italian kids in Monte Castello are taught to sing the Pracinhas/FEB hymn/theme, Fun fact 3: Most people who lived in that placed at the time said that the brazilian soldiers were the kindest, They often share ALL of their food and make parties with everyone of the civilians allowed to go. While the US and British forces were more closed. Fun fact 4: The time brazilians stoled a M4-Sherman tank from the US troops (NOT CONFIRMED THO, PROBABLY JUST A STORY): Our soldiers were often ridiculed by the US/UK troops, in fact they even enter brazilians camps and take their food, cigarettes among other things. Then, for revenge FEB wait until night comes and go to the US camp, and stoled food, cigarettes among other things... SUCH LIKE A WAR TANK. They paint the tank with brazilian flag colours and only give it back when heard an apology

A friend of mines tells a story about his grandpa who fought on the German side in a battler against Brazil. It was told the Germans could tell when the attack was coming from brazilians as the air strikes were much more precise. Two possible things here: 1 - Brazilian fighters climbed ranks more quickly for having less army or less replacement, forcing them to go to the front more frequent - more experience. 2 - they had to make each bullet worth the shot, as they had less ammo to use.

@ogalo1653
@ogalo1653 4 жыл бұрын
It wasn't as simple as that. Hitler never planned war with the West in the first place, as he knew that France alone was far more powerful than Germany at the time and that declaring war against Britain meant declaring war against half the world (under the Commonwealth). Besides, he saw his enemy on Bolshevism (that he considered to be a hideous monstrosity) and the Üntermenschen (which were concentrated at the eastern front) since the British and French are also aryans. He saw the East as the natural course of expansion for his lebensraum. If not by a single man, Field Mashal Erich Von Manstein, Fall Gelb would never have happened and Hitler would have negotiated with the Western powers before the war phisically started. Germany lost in 1942, when Hitler started ignoring Manstein, Guderian and Rommel, the architects of his warmachine.

Aryan is not a word invented by the Nazis. The term Aryan was firstly used by eugenistic scientists in the 19th and 20th centuries, and had a deeply defined categorization inside of eugenistic pseudoscience. The term aryan was used to define those races who are direct descendants from the indo-europeans, with the two words having been used interchangeably regularly by many scientists. Both the french and the british "races" (considering that you can apply a racial definition to a national, sociological borders) are very much descended from indo-europeans (as far as the point of view of eugenism is regarded) and are therefore aryans. Hitler did never change eugenistic definitions in a significant way - his plan was to take them off the paper and apply them on the way he saw fit, but he never changed them. His book, Mein Kampf very much describes who were the Üntermenschen and who weren't, and the propaganda by Goebbels for Germany in the pre-war period show how highly the Nazi party held their western, aryan brother-nations at. This misconsception that the western nations were not held as aryans probably comes from the false notion that aryan means germanic (even though Britain is a germanic nation, albeit some don't know that); it does *not* mean germanic or nordic. And a last point: France and Germany have deeply linked historical, and therefore racial development. Both nations were born from the same empire, both share their links with Charlemagne and the Franks and are, in general, so linked culturally, historically (and therefore from the eugenistic point of view, racially) that it is impossible to distinguish one as being inferior to the other in terms of its people. If the french are not aryans, germans also can't be. They are too deeply linked ever since they were born from West Francia, Middle Francia and East Francia. And the British need nothing to be said, since they even share the same language family with germany and are, in all senses of the word, a germanic race (which means it is aryan, along all germanic races). You need to read a bit more on eugenism (especially its definitions, since they date back way before Hitler and his own) and Mein Kampf, the ultimate definition of nazism's view on Üntermenschen. Read some Kershaw too, his books explain with detail what the Nazi party belived in.

incredible curiosities about Brazilians in the second world war: the Brazilian air force in the campaign of Italy even with less resources were the most lethal reaching more than 80% of the victories, an effect that amazed the Americans, Brazil was the only allied force to make an entire surrender of a German division in the war (they surrendered), there was a sergeant named MAX WOLF FILHO who was a war hero more courageous than any ally in the Italian campaign, he was always the first to lead the troops through the battles , he was not afraid of anything, he was decorated by the American captain for bravery, after several victories he was killed by a blast when he was leading a reconnaissance troop, several tried to recover his body and several died too, the Germans did not let .. recovered 3 days later, another fact was that a captured German captain told the Brazilians: "I have never seen soldiers advance against defensive positions without fearing your own life, you are a demon ", another fact was the American troops stealing food and drinks from the Brazilian camp, then the Brazilian commander spoke to the American commander and the commander smiled and said that this was things that happen in war and he left smiling, then the Brazilians took revenge and in the morning they stole a sherman tank from the Americans, at dawn after they found out they went to complain about this fact and the commander responded just like the American commander, and finally ... another important fact was the story of these 3 Brazilian heroes who kept a German division occupied for hours to be able to free Brazilian troops being bombed by German artillery, after the Germans discovered they were fighting with only 3 Brazilians, they were so surprised that they paid tribute to the Brazilian heroes , great smoking snakes 🚬🐍🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷 FEB.

Well the claim about Brazil being the only country to capture a German division is blatantly untrue. The US by itself was responsible for the capitulation of many divisions. German troops were surrendering by the millions in 1945. It shouldn't be surprising that Brazil captured at least one division.
@redaug4212

The claim that the Brazilian air force took 80% of the victories is also dubious. They had one squadron - 50 pilots - that flew combat missions for 6 months. He must be leaving out some details there... The rest are anecdotes so I'm not going to argue against those.

okay so I am Brazilian and the guy who wrote this is actually Brazilian too. I can clearly see that he was thinking in Portuguese and translating the text as best as he could and I must say he did an okay job. there are a lot of things there are some details that have been embellished but they are rooted in truth the thing is that they are only very well known in Brazil. no historian will take that much time to research Portuguese Brazilian word doc documents for search little part of an eventual book less that's the whole meaning of your work. The truth is we are a very proud and brave people as much like the Americans, French etc we very much appreciate the very few instances of heroism in war, even though we haven't participated in many. The German officer quote that Brazilians strike without fear is very true also due to the fact that they REALLY didn't know what to expect and thought that direct machine gun fire was the norm in war as quoted by a veteran in a documentary I have seen in BR

one little correction on this commentary it is actually a fact that Brazilian troops actually stole supplies from the American troops in the middle of the night because they didn't have enough jeeps and s***. they would paint the smoking snake overnight to pretend the Jeeps were Brazilian to begin with I'm sure the Yankees knew about it was probably too much trouble so they probably just let them keep the stupid Jeep

For my entire life I've been taught that the brazilian efforts in WW2 were "pathetic" and "palliative" instead of Brave, honored and glorious. I truly never understood why my teachers would say that if I saw big bands like Sabaton making tributes for brazilian soldiers, besides countless other tributes like statues and honor mentions in various other countries.

Here in Brazil there is a story about how Brazilian can be so creative, the "jeitinho brasileiro", our phylosophy, that everything and every problem can be solved. The story says that american soldier were losing her toes in the Alpes winter, but not the Brazilians, as you said on the video, whom never experienced such a harsh winter. And they just found out that the Brazilians were putting newspaper over their socks to isolate the cold temperature.

I’m very happy to see a video like that. Most of brazilians don’t know the histories of Monte Castelo and FEB participation in the WWII... I had the opportunity to meet Angelo Chaguri, a brazilian war hero who saved 2 allied wounded soldiers, carrying then in his back for 5 kilometers (3 miles). He carried one to a safe zone, returned to the front battle and picked-up the other one... He was also a professional soccer player for Comercial Soccer Team at Ribeirão Preto-SP city... As far as I know he is still alive and is 90 something years old...The song that represents the FEB in WWII is the “Canção do Expedicionário” (search in KZfaq) or Expeditionary Song. It is a very beautiful song... I’m a military in Brazil (LT) and we still sing this song in most of our cerimonies. Thank you for this video.

My grandfather was a brazillian officer who fought in the italian front, participating in Monte Castelo and several important italian battles. The most bizarre thing is that he kept a journal from day one to the final day. It starts with the many days the soldiers had to wait (in secrecy) at the brazillian navy base in Rio de Janeiro, not knowing when they would go to Europe (they did this to avoid U-Boats and german counter intelligence from torpedoing the troops in the way there). He also depicts the terrible conditions and terrible treatment gave by the US Military during the crossing of the atlantic -> Many brazilians died due to poor food, water and sleeping conditions (plus, it was pretty uncommon for brazilians to speak any english at the time, so the americans didnt even bother). The journal also depicts several insane situations... from artilliary canons being transported through icy mountains and almost falling down due to the crumbling terrain to him having to scour through the remains of a dead soldier who steps on a landmine to find the poor souls nametag. It also depicts the treatment we gave the germans after they surrendered, like ripping away the badges from officer's uniforms in from of everyone, and having they publicly humiliated (the bastards). Yeap.. lot's of untold histories

During October 1944 and February 1945 Brazilian troops underwent stiff resistance from German troops trapped high in the Apennine mountains in northern Italy, the Germans actually only started to withdraw in March 1945 when Allied troops began to pursue them in the Po valley. Even so, if you compare yourself between September 1944 and May 1945 between English, Americans, South Africans, Canadians and Indians. Brazilians were the most successful: 20 in Monte Castello and 15 in other situations surrendered.
@redaug4212
@redaug4212 4 жыл бұрын
@@marc6615 The Germans began a fighting withdrawal when the US II Corps broke through the Il Giogo Pass in September. The BEF encountered mostly light resistance throughout the autumn against second-rate Italian formations, then conducted patrolling duties during the defensive phase of the campaign over the winter near Monte Castello. Even then, when they finally did capture Monte Castello, it wasn't a huge battle and they certainly didn't bag 20 whole divisions(?). See the excerpt from the official history of the MTO - "[On February 19] troops of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force entered the fight to protect the 10th Mountain Division's right flank by seizing Monte Castello, about a mile southeast of Monte della Torraccia. Unknown to the Brazilians, the American drive toward Monte della Torraccia had precipitated an enemy withdrawal from Monte Castello. Behind a 15-minute artillery preparation, the Brazilian 1st Regiment converged on the objective from south and southwest and quickly gained the summit. Soon after nightfall the last resistance from a small rear guard ceased."

You forget that happened after 3 useless atacks against the summit where the atackers of 21st february encoutered the brazilian soldiers frozen deads on the sumitt of the others atacks, the stuborn defence made of the 232º german division on the Belvedere and Castello made changed the mind of the 4° corps and the americans where obliged to brought the 10th Mountain division to brake the germans , The atacks in November and Dezember of 1944 where suicides against up hill but the brazilians even so acomplished their missions . Really our artilhary and the brazilian air force bombed and shelled hard the Castello where our men toke it in 22nd february in support of americans of the 10th division but alone the 1st Die progressed and atacked La Serra and after in 5 march attacked alone the Mont Castelnuovo .

@@marc6615 Sure, I'm not saying that taking Monte Castello was easy by any means. But if anything that just proves my point that they really only had one sanguinary battle in the war, thus the low overall casualty rate, and that their merits - the number of Germans captured - are attributed to after Monte Castello was seized when the Germans were disorganized and on the run in the Po Valley.

She said she saw men with missing limbs, men crying at being able to reunite with their family and families that waited and waited, but no one came... Such a sad history, so much respect for our men who fought and gave their lives in the war. Proud to be Brazilian! (also, my grandfather turned 18 just as the war was about to end - he was about to be sent to Italy along with other men when the news came that the war had ended)

In the second war, the Brazilian army was trained with French Tranch doctrine, with French equipment from the first world war, in warm and flat lands, with extremely thin uniforms. As a result, we went to fight under one of the coldest winters in Italy (about 1 meter of snow) over mountains and with modern strategies totally unknown to Brazilian troops, it had absolutely everything to go wrong. They received second-hand equipment from the Americans, and the other part of the uniforms that they did not receive, the soldiers had them do by exchanging belongings and food with the Italians, so they had everything they needed. I live in Natal / Parnamirim where the old airport of Natal is located, which served as one of the most strategic logistical points during the war, which at the time became the busiest military airport in the world, this is due to Natal being the closest point to europe in all of america, and as the travel distance of airplanes was limited, the use of this airport was vital to the war effort! And a small correction, the first battle of the Brazilian Air Force, was at Ponta Negra beach, here in Natal in the state of "Rio Grande do Norte" which is relatively easy to confuse with "Rio de Janeiro" :) I personally find it very sad that the history of these soldiers is almost forgotten in Brazil, while in Italy until today they celebrate the passage of BEF in Italy, but slowly this is changing as people realize the uselessness of our educational system and start to study for themselves.

One very cool fact about the Brasillian troops was their songs. When I saw the picture of soldiers using musical instruments I thought it would be mentioned but "we" would make "Sambas" and some jingles about the war and the enemy and sang them while on battle, those songs heightened Morale of both americans, brazillians and Italian civillians. Some prisioners captured by the Smoking Snakes would talk about those songs as fearful and there are histories about some squads holding enemy fire while singing those songs like the battle wasn't anything. There is a really good BBC article about it: www.bbc.com/portuguese/brasil-43385807 Unfortunely I wasn't able to found the english version of the article.
