Remember having to do this in 2010... when we had bad weather due to snow and frost. We cleared are lane but the county roads were impassable. 3 full tanks in a month, when you think we are 4 1/2 hrs a time milking its soul destroying😕. We too were compensated but if i remember correctly they went off like our yearly average. Our milk volume however in December is higher than average because we do most of our calving then, so we lost out quite a bit.

Good morning Richard, thank you for the video, I work at Cadburys and when they have problems the waste milk goes for pig feed !! Would it not pay to perhaps investigate this route in case a future problem did occur? I know it's all about time etc and it may not be worth the hassle. Thank you for the video and take care stay safe 👍😎🇬🇧.

I’ve had to do this a few times over the years, bad weather is usually the cause. In 1998 we had an ice storm we were without power for 16 days, we were sharing a generator with several other farms so we could all take turns using a generator to milk the cows. Trees and powerlines down all over, I think we dumped milk for the first week, then the trucks started being able to get around and pick it up again. Fun times!

That sucks at least your getting compensated, When milk quotas came in back in the 80s/90s I had spent 3 years as a herdsman building the herd up to produce more milk and we couldn't get any more quota so had to start pulling the plug, That was sole destroying and that combined with major foot surgery led to my decision to leave farming altogether Luckily we had a tractor generator for power cuts that others have mentioned but think we did have collection issues occasionally due to snow

I was wondering why you had to dump it all. Here in the US when I was milking to dump just enough to get the next milking in. My last milk tank held 9000 lbs. So if my next milking was 4500 lb that's what I could drain off the bottom of the tank. We had to let the tank stir so we weren't just dumping low-fat milk. Some reason the creamery got suspicious when are butter fat test would go from 4.2 to 5.5 and then drop back down to 4.2.. we were lucky, from 1979 to 2008 we had the same family haul our milk. And We never dumped milk because of hauler problems or weather . Unfortunately drug residue problems but not haul caused problems

Good morning, it's so sad when this has to happen, can you legally source a back up outlet for the milk such as a cheese dairy or are you tied into a contract? When we had the blizzards in 1978 and the tanker couldn't get through my Dad's boss sold it to a local cheese dairy and we borrowed a trailered tank to deliver it behind a tractor, I still have a photo of the snow drift the tractor driver went over just to get out from the farm😳 we had power cuts that year too

The cows sound about 5 minutes away from drinking each others’ milk - they don’t like full udders. There’ll be a Xmas cow-conga soon, all attached udder to mouth - but no singing. Cold milk on one stomach is bad enough, but 4? Ahhh listen to them, poor girls. The monster from the Milk Lagoon…. Urghhh, winter; I hated winters, fencing, welding, hitting frozen fingers on sheet steel,… still do anything to go back though, the early 80’s were a very happy time. Hazard will love milk from the cow when he discovers caffeine, and girls. Crack on Richard, 😉👍

we have an electric pump that screws onto the tank outlet. yiu can then pump it into the myck spreder then spread it on the land. Much too toxic to allow down a drain. Not a lot of people realise that problem with milk

@@thefunkyfarmer TOXIC is the wrong word. It’s actually a “pollutant” in a water course. Milk is never TOXIC as it’s a 100% natural product but should never be allowed to enter a water course.

february 1995 had to dump 6200 gallons milk hauler could'nt get here roads blocked by snow for days co-op insurance covers 1 tank loss per/yr i put a galvanized stock tank in skidloader bucket dumped those in nearby corn field seemed like it took forever did'nt want to send it down the drain would wreck septic tank/drain field forever. year before that same situation but i had opened 1 1/2 mile county road with tractor/snowblower county public works supervisor called me gave me hell told me never do it again or get fined. TODAY & every weekday school bus turns around in my driveway sometimes comes up my 1/4 mile driveway turns around in my yard around 6:30-6:45am so its up early for me plow/de-ice driveway so other peoples kids don't get late for school. the things farmers go through

If this was a regular occurrence, then yes, not because this is rare and the water flow goes to the lagoon, it is not an issue. Milk cleans up well from the yard after a day or two. Farmers only buy what is necessary, not things for just in case.
