I almost bought Mystery Express when it came out but then I got Mystery of the Abbey as a gift and never got around to buying it before it went out of print. It is a shame because Mystery of the Abbey never ended up working for me. I agree Letters from Whitechapel is the best hidden movement game. Another deduction game I really like Lady Alice. I think it is often overlooked.

I liked Lady Alice, another one of those ones that really works only with 4 players.

+Ivan Grimm The time element in Express is the only part I feel does not work that well - other than that its been a great game

Literally just bought Inkognito because it looks great. I'm getting Mystery of the Abbey based off your review, did not expect it to miss the list.

Very original list. Love it! I would've guessed maybe one right, maybe zero. :)

Thanks! Would love to see a list like this that was broad enough to include games that have other elements too (e.g., Alchemists)

Hi Dan! I'm a big deduction games fan as well, which is why I find this list very helpful - thank you. I realize this video is short of 3 years old, which is why I'd like you to please consider making an updated one. If you don't feel like that's something you might do soon, maybe just provide titles in the reply? Deduction games are still, I feel, a niche, but there have been some new list candidates coming up for the last couple of years. In particular, I'm wondering if Cryptid would make that top5 for you now?

@@TheGameBoyGeeks Indeed, you do mention that :) Thanks for replying! What do you think about Awkward Guests (currently on Kickstarter, original title Incómodos Invitados)? Tom says it's the best deduction game he has ever played (video bsHeEDvEyTU).

Deduction games are my favorite too! I actually prefer Scotland Yard over Letters from Whitechapel, mainly because the feel is very similar, but Letters can drag too long, especially with high player counts.

I absolutely love Code 777, where would it have ended up on this list? Has Think Str8 replaced It for you? Pity the components are so terrible...

+macaddct1984 Codee 777 probably would have made this list. Probably in the same spot as Think Str8. I still kept Code 777 because even though it's similar it does feel different.

I was always interested in seeing this list - I wondered what your thoughts were comparing Mystery Express to Mystery of the Abbey - but now we can see that Abbey is not in your Top 5 - out of curiosity where would it sit - I have always been curious about it but never went after it cause I own Express

+Kristopher Jamieson Abbey might have made a top 10. it would have been on the cusp. It's a little too random, but fun for what it is.

Sleuth has been popping up quite a bit recently and I'm very interested in it. The problem is, I can't seem to find it without paying extra costs for it being rare, on top of even higher costs for shipping from other countries. Does anyone know of a print n play version of this somewhere? Even under a different name? I'm happy to pay, just not happy to pay ludicrous amounts!

Thanks for sharing! How would you compare "letters from white chapel " with "fury of Dracula"? Would "fury of Dracula " make your top ten?
@TheGameBoyGeeks
@TheGameBoyGeeks 8 жыл бұрын
+Ines Tsai I have never played Fury, but I have seen it played, and for me there is too much other mechanics around it (combat). I like pure deduction and Whitechapel delivers that, where Fury adds much more Ameri-trash mechanics on top of it for my taste.

I'm very late to this video. My favorite type of game is deduction (as well as hidden identity). WHY don't they make more deduction games, at least great ones? It seems the market is glutted with area-control, resource management, civilization-building games. or the games are outrageously complex with 100 or more pieces and a rule book that's 50+ pages with at least as many "scenarios". Let's not forget the board games that try to mimic video games. If I wanted to play a video game, I'd play one. I believe in your overall philosophy of a great game, that it needs to have the proper depth to complexity ratio, i.e. a simple game on its face that's easy to teach and learn, but yet can be played on many levels with varying degrees of strategy, and with players of different skill levels. Therefore, it has a decent amount of depth without being very complex. They just don't make many games like that. Most board game creators unnecessarily over-complicate their games in an effort to be original or creative, which only harms the playability and, I feel, the overall success of the game. Love or hate Clue, there is a reason it's lasted 50+ years on store shelves. It's much harder to do something well in a simple way rather than in a complex one. It's like authors who take 900 pages to tell a story, when it would have been much better executed in 350. It's the depth-to-complexity challenge that I feel we don't have more great board games, and certainly ones that will be deemed classics outside the niche board game community and on store shelves 50 years from now.
