In this Video, I review the Walther PDP Match Steel Frame. This is the first round of 2 videos on this gun as this is a first shots video that dives in depth on the features and details. I also compare it to its predecessor, the Walther Q5 Match Steel Frame.
As competition is in its spirit, I touch on the nuisances what you’ll have to think about if you decide to shoot IDPA and/or USPSA.
You’ll want to Subscribe, because you’ll want to see the 1000 Round review in which I discuss the reliability, ownership and follow up of any challenges I may have had from this video.

Thanks for this video. I remember you telling me a few weeks ago your review was coming on this pistol. I look up that holster company as well. So now I've narrowed it down to three comp style pistols. Walther PDP match steel, H&K VP9L match , and Canik rival S. I am leaning towards the Walther, tho. Will see. I'm trying to do is look up local gun shops in my area that have all three, so I can get a fill for them and possibly shoot them. That! Is a pain in the butt to find.

Especially with the prices of the Rival S now being $1299-$1399 from the few big online retailers that have recently got a few in stock. I am wondering if that will be the new price point of the Rival S with the TTI Combat coming out at $949?

Great review. I've got both a Q4 and Q5 steel frame. I've been wondering how the PDP SF compares. I admit I haven't shot either of the Walthers much after moving up from my CZ SP01 to an S2 OR and TS2 cut for an optic then also discovering 2011s. I recently took the Q5 to the range and I was surprised that I didn't like my shooting grip with it anymore. I felt like I just couldn't get high up enough under the beaver tail. It was actually kinda frustrating. I figured I've just gotten use to the CZs and 2011s - with those I can really jam my hand up under the beaver tail and get my shooting hand thumb on the safety and lock in really well. I felt pretty vindicated when you mentioned the grip challenges you have with the Q5 as well. Glad to hear the PDP seems better in that regard. I'll have to find one to try. The price is steep but not outrageous (what's up with those cheap iron sights tho?!). I still think the S2 and S2 OR are the best value bets in this category of gun.

What I'm seeing here holding my Q4 SF is that the new full size PDP SF models appear to use a Q4 SF frame that's been extended, rather than a Q5 SF that's been extended.

The recoil spring is around 18.9lbs. I tossed it out on my polymer PDP and my PDP Match SF 😂 ZRTS long stroke recoil spring for the steel frame is INSANELY NICE. A cheat code. I think you should look into it.

Great review! With price starting to get into the 2011 range and this gun possibly competing in limited optics, do you think it keeps up with 2011s like the staccato or DS9?
@TheGentlemanGunner
@TheGentlemanGunner 5 ай бұрын
I believe strongly that the Q5SF (especially when you do all the right stuff to it) was competitive to begin with. Knowing that… I would probably answer it from a new bees perspective… nicer 2011s will feel better in the hands as well as the trigger… both can provide identical performance… but the PDP is a better choice if you don’t want to worry as much about what ammo you choose, oiling, and cleaning it.

Dara has holsters for all the PDPs, including the steel frames. The Dara OWB is pretty good, I have one for my Q5 match sf. When I ordered it I told them I have the extended mag button and they said okay, no problem, and sent me one that fits the extended mag button.

Nice review. Relally thinking about using the compact version in 4" for IDPA CCP, but it is just a little bit too heavy. Does it come with a plastic or with a steel guide rod ?
@TheGentlemanGunner
@TheGentlemanGunner 5 ай бұрын
It’s funny, because I couple of us are tinkering with that thought. My first solution is inline with your thought…polymer guide rod. I also am speculating that we can find some playing around with base pads to help with that. Trying to consider this without putting holes in the frame and slide

@@oddsparrow8522 Thanks for the information. Just changing the guide rod would have been an easy way to drop the weight. Guess I will have to wait until the gun is available at my local gun store. As of now, the stats appear to differ ... according to Walther Germany, the PDP Steel compact should be around 1090g (38.44 oz), but Walther US states 40.39 oz (1145 g), both with empty magazine inserted. The US statement would align with my PPQ Q4 SF OR, which is around 1135g.
@765para
@765para 5 ай бұрын
Correction: WaltherArms states the same 40.39 oz for the PDP Compact SF 4" and the PDP Full Size Steel Frame 4.5", so they probably made a copy&paste error there.

I’d also like to add that I’ve added a lot of brass to my polymer PDP 5” to bring up the weight. Compared to the Match Steel Frame… even though my polymer was 54oz loaded, the balance of the steel frame is amazing. It feels balanced without a light added. Also: Taylor Freelance +0 basepads help. The +3s have fitment issues with this magwell. Walther keeps making their magwells more narrow. Looking to get it worked out with TF in the next upcoming weeks. Your review was amazing btw. A few minor upgrades in magazines will make it a great contender. Luckily I already had 10 mags before I got the SF. I think for the trigger pull weight, you can swap it for a SpringCo 3.5lb trigger return spring if you want. I’m probably gonna do that after 1,000rds. My polymer PDP Dynamic Performance Trigger breaks at 2.8lbs but that’s at almost 4400rds. So it’ll break in the more you put rounds on it. Subscribing to see your progress with the gun. 🫡

@TheGentlemanGunner
@TheGentlemanGunner 5 ай бұрын
Something I didn’t mention in this video is how both frames are made. If you look on the inside of the Rival-S… it’s essentially two pieces of cast steel mended together… a friend pointed this out to me as this is where Canik finds a fair amount of savings in production. Both generations of Walther SFs are machined from a large chunk of steel (you can really see it in the early batches of the Q5SFs). But… I really couldn’t find a thesis worth saying there was quantifiable effect in performance other than perceived value… so I never mentioned it. Thank you for checking out the other videos, I appreciate it and happy shooting!

I like PPQ Q5 SF better...much better metal target sights (yes they don't cowitness oh well), metal optic plate, subjectively better looks. PDP does have a better grip for huge fat hands, slightly better balance, performance trigger, cowitnessing, and fat slide meant for optics. It's a toss up but I like the Q5 SF better for a cheaper price and I will just install a dynamic performance trigger anyways. I hope Walther keeps the Q5/Q4 SF for people like me who don't like optics.
@TheGentlemanGunner
@TheGentlemanGunner 5 ай бұрын
I’ll admit my bias towards the PDP SF for largely the reason you mentioned… great for larger hands as well as the balance… but I do think it’ll be interesting for current Q4/5SF owners to make the jump for the reasons you mentioned especially once you install the dynamic trigger.

I have a Q5 SF and S2 OR. I think the S2 is a better value but a lot depends on whether you'd prefer a striker fired or hammer fired gun. I installed the performance fire control group in my Q5 and the trigger is terrific. Clean and crisp. My S2 OR's trigger is nearly stock, with just a bit lighter main and trigger springs installed. The SA isn't quite as nice as the Q5 but for me it's very good. An upside to the S2 is that you can have a DA/SA gun or easliy convert it to a SA. Ergonomically, I do prefer the S2 OR. I can get higher up under the beaver tail and use the safety to get a good purchase on the gun with my thumb (I installed an extended safety). When I shoot steel plate and our version of IDPA/USPSA matches, I pick the the S2 over the Q5. Good luck with your decision. The PDP looks pretty awesome.

Walther nailed it with the design on the steel frame andbof course the trigger but for $1900 you give me plastic garbage sights and optic cover? Come on. For the price you're getting into 2011 territory.
@Osprey1994
@Osprey1994 5 ай бұрын
You didn't pay attention, and you're not thinking. The optic plate being metal would push it over weight, and sights are a very personal thing. Why add cost to the gun in the form of nice metal sights, that might still get ripped off the gun. They went with cheap sights that are glock pattern, and easily replaced with some nice Dawson Precision sights or whatever you prefer. As for the optic plate, the gun was designed for optics, the plate is junk for 99% of people who will shoot it.
@awokeone7997
@awokeone7997 5 ай бұрын
@Osprey1994 Listen all that bs that gun was design for optics is for dumb as people to buy into their bs marketing strategy so you won't complain about the cheap as sights they are giving you. When you are paying $1900 for a gun that's made for comp, you better give me some good sights regardless if I can add a red dot or not. Why do I have to pay an additional price after paying $1900 and the optic cover could've been made from aluminum. I didn't see the Shadow 2 with plastic sights and a cheap as optic cover and its not $1900.
