It takes a lot of courage to tell the world about your addiction. He is right, you tend to hide your dark side from people. Even a common man would hide it, let alone a world famous athlete. This man had all the money, fame and admiration in the world, he could have easily stayed quiet about it. But to still openly talk about his addiction deserves a lot of praise. Massive respect to Wasim Akram.

Here is the funny thing: Wasim is probably the greatest ODI bowler of all time, so his place in greatest ODI XI is confirmed without a doubt. As it goes for tests, Wasim actually underperformed (not surprised considering Pakistan’s fielding); so Wasim’s test stats don’t put him in the best ever category, there are at least 5 other test bowlers with better stats. But, if you look at former cricketer’s Greatest Test XI, Wasim is almost always included. I think someone did a comparison and Sachin was the most common name across all Greatest Test XI’s, and Wasim was the second person who showed up the most. Now for Wasim to not have the best stats in tests and to constantly show up the second most in these Greatest Test XI’s shows you how good Wasim really was, and that sometimes stats aren’t everything. Some of the greatest batsmen ever have said Wasim was the toughest bowler they ever faced; Brian Lara, Kallis, Ponting, Viv Richards, and surprisingly Sangakkara, who only played Wasim after Wasim turned 34.. way past his prime. So yea, to add to your comment; Wasim is the second player only after Sachin to be included in the most Greatest Test XI’s, considering there are bowlers with much better stats. Shows you how lethal he really was.

Wow! Just got to the bit where he speaks about his addiction...fucking awesome TGC for this sort of content, so much respect for Wasim Akram speaking honestly, especially coming from his background really takes courage...in my eyes he's twice the legend he would have ever been on the pitch for speaking truthfully about this. It will help so many people understand that it's a disease that doesn't discriminate. Well done TGC and thank you Akram for this.

Favourite ever player, what a legend. Knew cricket was different to soccer when I saw Wasim, Gower, and a few more top players in a charity game at a minor counties ground. All the players walked round chatting to the crowd, even as a kid I realised it would never happen in professional football, let alone with some of the worlds best players. Cricketers are among the most humble athletes. Can you imagine him in T20?!

As an addict myself, I have so much respect for the way he talked about his addiction problems with total honesty. The rehab didn’t work for him at first because he wasn’t doing it for himself. He was doing it to please other people. You can only stop it for yourself. Brilliant interview, one of the best I’ve ever heard and certainly the best on this channel. Wasim & McGrath were the only 2 bowlers which used to threaten us. We indians never worried about the spinners our pace bowlers coz majority of the times the bowler who could bowl good line & length won matches, and bowlers like Wasim , McGrath didn't just had control but also swing and smartness. Wasim is awesomely respected in India.

I've watched the game since 94 or 95. I've watched a lot of bowlers, Walsh, Ambrose, Donald, Cork, McGrath, Pollock, Vaas, Waqar, Wasim, Srinath, Ntini, Flintoff, Bond, Akhtar, Lee, Zaheer, Cummins, Anderson, Steyn and many more. If, I have to pick only two most dangerous bowlers in this list, then it is Akram and McGrath for me. Steyn comes a close third. Now, remember these are the most challenging bowlers in the last 25-30 years. Hands down - these two bowlers were very very threatening. When Wasim Akram bowled, he looked like he would take a wicket with every ball. And that too in those days, when batsmen were very cautious and were not playing rash shots. So, I'd say taking a wicket in those days was more difficult. It is sad to see the game has changed completely now. But, Wasim Akram was the most dangerous bowler that I've seen on television, his skill was out of the world. Love for Qasim from India, great cricketer and also seems like a great person. I remember when we were watching the 2003 world cup Ind vs Pak, we were very scared for Sachin to get out to Akram. Because everything would be the same and one ball will go out and the other will come in, he was a really difficult bowler for even great batsmen like Sachin, Lara and Ponting too. Nevertheless, cricket was great and was shining in glory when Wasim bowled. I just don't feel that the quality of cricket is the same post like 2010s...but those days of cricket was outstanding. May be there is more money now, but not sure if the quality is good still - not for me. And I don't like everybody knowing everybody and hugging and laughing after the game - you cannot laugh after losing the fxxking game with your opponent. Cricket is losing something important - cricket is losing the need for players like Dravid, Root, De Silva, etc. It is becoming a powerplay, which is very very sad. My guess is: in the next decade, cricket will lose the relevance for Test matches and it will lose the its soul. And what will be left is power players playing for money. But, coming back, hats off to Wasim Akram!! A really great bowler!!

Great job by the way, lads. You're absolutely smashing it lately with the T20 WC content, and the longform interviews of international cricketers. Absolutely love your work, and watch everything you do. Would be great if you could get a longer form interview with Wasim at some point, and go into even more depth about some of these issues. Wasim was the best ever. I had no clue about his cocaine addiction - cannot wait to read the book. I love his candidness about his addiction and appreciate his comments on culture and the need for it to evolve. A wonderful cricketer and more than that a wonderful human

I agree he mentioned every single person in his cricket life who coached or selected him., which shows his class. One of the greatest bowlers in the cricket world and a treat to watch :)
