Great to hear this! I've read so much about her. Wish I was around during Broadway's golden era.

Yes, she did: Among My Souvenirs (1943). We are still searching the world for this, hoping that the broadcast was transcribed and some collector has the records in his collection. However, Laurette made no full-length sound film appearances. She did star in three silent movies, Peg O' My Heart, One Night in Rome, and Happiness (One Night in Rome is considered lost, and the other two are held in prints at Warner Bros., who has yet to release them on DVD for theater students to study and enjoy.)

The Harry Ransom Center at UT does have a radio appearance by Laurette Taylor called We the People and she does 3 scenes from Peg O' My Heart, Humoresque and the jonquil scene from The Glass Menagerie and it's amazing all that has been written about is true. Very brief but it will floor you.

she is...just not in your household. She lived, and died, many years ago

i read that there is an audio recording of a scene from "the glass menagerie" locked away in some university, featuring her and the rest of the original cast. her performance in "menagerie," was, as i'm sure most of you know, legendary. i would kill to hear that recording!

Sadly, Laurette Taylor did NOT make any film or audio recordings of The Glass Menagerie. David W. Menefee, renowned author of The First Female Stars: Women of the Silent Era, investigated this long-standing rumor while researching for the chapter on Laurette Taylor. The university in question is the University of Texas at Austin, where Laurette's papers are held. In that collection, he found the rare 78 rpm discs from The Glass Menagerie, but they contain only "music cues," and no dialogue.

Personaking7 Laurette Taylor played on the stage with her husband Hartley Manners in the nineteen teens and 1920s which was a long time ago.(100 years or more). Her husband died around 1930 and Ms. Taylor turned to drink. She made an appearance on the NY stage while she was drunk in the 1930s and was barred by the actors's Union from appearing on Broadway. Eddie Dowling who produced and appeared as Tom in the Glass Menagerie took a chance on her despite her continued drinking problem. With considerable difficulty...performances had to be cancelled... she made it through the out of town tryouts in Chicago. The Glass Menagerie was a big success on Broadway but Ms. Taylor died not long after the run ended. Famous actors who were lucky enough to see Ms. Taylor's Broadway performance all said it was sensational.

Comments like this are vexing. It has such an air of disrespect. Laurette Taylor's career and her final triumph in The Glass Menagerie are among the most treasured of historical facts. It's our job to keep those careers that come before the advent of sight and sound in every cellphone alive. We keep them alive by talking about their accomplishments and their place in the order of "what came before." We show no respect by asking, with an air of take down, "if she was so great, why isn't she a household name?" The question you should ask is, "how did I get to this place in my life having never heard of this mysterious and legendary creature?"

Name a dramatic stage actor from a century ago who is a household name, as if popularity determined greatness. Was Lincoln a great president? Really? He won about the same percentage of the popular vote in his reelection campaign as Calvin Coolidge. In his first try, he was elected with 40% of the popular vote. I don't think we normally judge greatness based purely on popularity or else young people would be clamoring for Ashton Kutcher to open an acting school. Sometimes we consider the influence a person has on others in the field in determining greatness, and Taylor's final performances just after WWII influenced a whole crowd of famous actors whose careers blossomed in the 1950's and beyond.
