the great stars

Silent movie stars were as eloquent with their voices as they were with their faces. John Gilbert, one of the biggest stars in silent movies, has often been wrongly said to have a voice unsuitable for sound movies. This clips proves that claim to be false.
John Gilbert clip excerpted from SILENT MOVIE STARS SPEAK CD, and is used here with permission from the distributor.

he had a good voice better than many actors today, the high pitch might be because of the recording technology

His voice is fine. The story of his voice being "squeaky" is BS.

Bill Tolles I know! From the criticism he received about his voice when he made his first talkie in Royal Wedding (or was it Romeo and Juliet with Norma Shearer?) I expected to hear Gilbert's voice a thousand times worse. Unattractive voice bullshit.

The main reason why John Gilbert's voice was inaccurately perceived as being high and nasally is thanks to the primitive speakers in movie theatres, even a few years after the advent of full-blown talking pictures. The speakers warped his voice and emphasized the higher part of his range over the lower parts, leading to a voice that sounded nasally, tinny and effete. Sadly, sound projection technology (and the public's poor impression of him as leading man material) didn't change fast enough to save his career, and it devastated him.

His voice isn't a liability. I like his voice and yes he had the voice of a sexy leading man. Why did MGM think his voice was high-pitched, and whiny? They ruined Gilbert's career, not he. This made him very unhappy up to his untimely death. Poor guy. 😟

Dolly Dagger you can Blame LB Mayer and the Mayer family ruined Many stars and caused countless Abuse, molestations and trafficking of minors. Mayer ruined Gilbert because Gilbert stood up to him. Mayer doctored the sound recordings on that picture and ruined Gilbert's career. Paid off the recording engineer. The Mayer family should be forced to pay compensation for crimes against many of its former Employees. That is a Shameful Family and LB Mayer should not be idolised or venerated as a Pioneer in Hollywood. He is a criminal.

And the treatment of Lew Ayres. The man signed up to be a medic rather than a soldier because he was a committed pacifist. He found a way to serve his country, but the public never forgave him. Of course, John Wayne never served, they just assumed he had, and he gets to be remembered as a real man's man and Hollywood legend. Watch "Holiday" from 1938 and get a taste of what we missed out on. They need to revive the framed Fatty Arbuckle's image too.

That's funny. I was thinking the same thing. I think his voice is far from the best, but the others usually are little better. It may be (see Wikipedia) that it was an excuse by the studios to dump the man for other reasons.

What’s wrong with his voice? People said that his voice were feminine and too high-pitched? I don’t think so.
