The Great War

The Great War

5 жыл бұрын

Unrest within the German Empire is spreading, resentment against the war, the hunger and the elites is turning into revolutionary action and with a mutiny in Kiel the wheels begin to turn quickly. Austria signs an armistice, the Macedonian Front collapses, Romania might enter the war again and the new German political leaders send a delegation through the lines in France. Their goal: An Armistice.

From what been posted on the other channel, following the second world war week by week, It given the impression TGW team already stopped filming here and the last 3 weeks were in the can a number of weeks ago (4 or 5 weeks ago) - if so it looks like last week will be the last set of the videos - but it all down to what the contract of employment says and what the team have signed for or even been paid for and up to (but it looks like they all left after the final 3 weeks where filmed) and I bet there is a lot of video that never been shown yet from trips and other projects they have filmed over the last few years - hopefully, Flo can do the swap and make it to the other channel as well.

Thank you Indy and the rest of The Great War team for creating something that brought so much clarity about one of the most terrible wars in human history. You did more than what most of all of our history teachers could do and gave this pivotal point in history the attention it deserves. At one point it made me painfuly aware that if i was born not in 1996 but in 1896 that i would have most likely died like half of Serbia's male population, on Cer, by the banks of the Kolubara river, on some road in Albania, a hospital in Greece or Tunisia, on the slopes of mount Kajmakchalan and so many unnamed battlefields. Although I write this with tears in my eyes I am not sad that this is over, it was about a war and as all wars it should end, I am thankful for your work. Yours truly.

"Germany has fallen..." Damm after four years, after so much horrors, battles conditions beyond human sanity and so much human lives lost, those words are heavy... I would like to thanks indy and the crews for the show, only such a masterpiece as yours could give a glimpse of the full scale of this war. Pehaps what i like the most was the difference bewteen "the great battle plans" and the little anecdotes about soldiers and simple people. As a descendant of a french familly who paid a big cost to this war, it helped me understand how you could feel back then about all this happening around you. Thanks indy, it was a pleasure.

Not only did 1914 victories save Serbia but also impacted Italy to enter the war and choose allied side. With Italy on Central powers side, the war may have had a different end. Furthermore, Serbia`s role in breaking Salonica front was widely described by Foch, D`Esperay and Lloyd George as well as by the German Kaiser ("62.000 Serbian soldiers have turned the tide of the War and decided the outcome" in his telegram to the Bulgarian king)

My favourite Wilfred Owen poem Futility Move him into the sun- Gently its touch awoke him once, At home, whispering of fields half-sown. Always it woke him, even in France, Until this morning and this snow. If anything might rouse him now The kind old sun will know . Think how it wakes the seeds,- Woke, once, the clays of a cold star. Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides, Full-nerved-still warm-too hard to stir? Was it for this the clay grew tall? -O what made fatuous sunbeams toil To break earth’s sleep at all?

One of the best history channels on here, you and your team really deserve some sort of KZfaq Oscar for your series. I've always been fascinated about how Germany went about starting the peace process, such a hard subject to get facts on. I knew about the car journey across the front and Foch demanding no negotiations but I'm still at a loss as to how it actually started, who made the call, who decided who was to make the journey, which German/French/British army units were told 'there's a couple of cars coming through, don't shot at them', how did the road cars actually get through no-mans land, where did the delegates stay, who's idea was it to use a railway car rather than say a hotel or palace????? Would love to know the nitty gritty of these events.

A while ago in the top 11 misconception about The Great War video Indy said one of the biggest misconceptions is that the German army wasn't defeated when in reality they were. He then says that Germany surrendered before the German defences were broken which they would have been which allowed the myth that Germany wasn't defeated to exist. Maybe I'm just stupid but they look pretty broken to me. A few weeks ago the Hindenburg line was even breached.

He most likely refered to the countries border defences. They're still on French/Belgian territory rather than Germany itself. The fact that Germany itself was never invaded was a big factor in the spawning of the myth.
